Also, if I only had one handgun for everything, I would have to go with a glock 26. The 19 is too big for deep carry if you're going somewhere where it's not exactly legal. G26 can except longer mags and use 17 round mags for home defense and switch to 10 when concealed carry. Although it doesn't have a light rail, I believe that the compactness outweighs the need for a weapon light of only to have one gun

M&P 2.0 subcompact would be my 1 gun pick. Run it with the 12 rd mag for carry, and then use the provided grip sleeve to convert it into 17 or 15rd full size nightstand gun at night. It also has a pic rail which is great for HD.

For the longest time, I stayed away from Glocks because it seemed everyone had one and to be honest...glock fan boys are annoying. Once I held and shot a Glock 19 I finally saw what the fuss was about- and I shoot it better than any other pistol I've used. So I bought one and won't turn back. Glock 19 Gen 3 is where it's at.

I am like you 100 percent. Only for me the glock is not a 19 but the full size 22 and 17. The 19 and 21 are too big for me but the 22 and 17 fits my hand perfectly. Solid advice Reid. The one thing I would add is to make sure it fits your hand. By fit, I mean the ability to operate the "controls" without altering your grip. Magazine release, slide release (I prefer the slingshot method) safety or hammer drop. Too many folks buy what the gun magazines or gun store commandos say they need, but it doesn't fit. Not everybody has the hands for a Beretta M9. Thank you for being there.
@ddyoder

Don't forget, if polymer just isnt your thing and you're into steel frames and a name brand but don't want to pay big bux, a surplus Browning Hi Power can be had for around $400. They sometimes aren't too pretty but they function just fine. I found a vintage "T" model for $425 and mine even came with a new barrel and decent Parkerizing. It was a steel. There are 13 and 20 round mags made by mec-gar available on line, as well. Time proven, extremely reliable and you can do a lot with them. You can change sights and I added an under-barrel rail mount for a light/laser... And they even make a top rail for an optic. I'm in the whole outfit (minus the accessories) about $500 and it's a room clearing machine. Tons of holsters are available as well. Thinner than the Glock and just plain cooler. Even old-tech can be modernized if you so choose and a Hi Power holds its value. Even the ugly ones.

IMHO...Nothing beats a Glock Pistol, Nothing beats a basic AK-47, and Nothing beats a Remington 870 12 gauge pump shotgun. For about $1500 you can have all three. Covering personal defense, home defense and hunting for food. Reid's right...save your money for ammo and training.

Agree with you on the glock, but a $500 WASR is going to be shit and usually not reliable. New 870s are still good but they rust quickly for some reason. If we are talking about budget here, my choice would be a glock 26 or 19, higher quality AK or AR pattern rifle (a MP sport II will suffice), and a Maverick 88. These aren't the best choices possible but I think they would do well.

Yeah the old ones are bulletproof, but once Remington was acquired by Freedom Group in the later 2000s, their quality control went to shit. Basically if you want a rem870 these days, get a mossberg 500 or 590, or if you want a cheaper model get a Maverick 88 (new in the box for like $170).

I couldn't have said it better. Very good advice. The only thing I'd like to add is look for police trade ins if your budget is tight. There's a LOT of VERY good pistols like Glocks, Sigs and S&W out there for barely over $300 that are police trade ins. They usually have some finish wear but most have very few rounds through them so they're in great shape.

There are other points to consider. Semi-Auto or revolver? You might say, "Semi-Auto always because they hold a lot more ammo." Nope, I tried that with my wife. Glock 17 in 9 mm. Did not work at all... Then I tried a revolver with 38 special - snub nose. Nope did not work. She could not "rack" the Glock. No matter how many times she tried, she could not rack it once. The 38 special? The recoil was too much so she would "close her eyes" preparing for the "pain" of the recoil. Worthless, if you are afraid of the "power" of the gun. So, I ended up getting her a kid's pistol. A 22 revolver that shoots 22LR. What did she do? First, we loaded it with snake shot since we live in the country where there are a lot of rattlers! She shot a snake no more than 2 days after we practiced.... I was away from home, a snake was engaged with the dogs and she pulled out her 22LR revolver and shot the snake, a 4 foot long rattler.... Can a 22 revolver stop a full grown man? Empty it into him and see what happens.... Maybe and maybe not right away, but it beats NOT racking the semi-auto or closing your eyes when you pull the trigger on a "too powerful" 38 special.... I shot a wild boar with that 9mm glock while on our property with my dogs. Didn't hurt the darn thing. So, I sold it and got a 1911, 45acp. 2 years later, the same situation occurred. Dead boar. How did I solve all of these "gun" situations? Moved from that darn house that had tons of snakes and wild boar.... Now, only deer and ravens and squirrels are the threats.... And yes, at that old house, a cougar killed my dog right off my back porch while we were away at work. I ended up with 5 dogs to stop that problem, but 5 dogs don't always get along together!!!! So, Revolver or Semi-Auto does not always come down to the number of rounds it holds...

My first gun was a Smith & Wesson Model 60 in .357. That gun was a total bruiser. A 23 ounce gun with a wood grip firing full house .357 will teach you some lessons about not flinching and trigger control. I attribute most of my skill in shooting handguns to that little gun. I've still got it, and after around 700-800 rounds of .357 magnum, most of which were federal 158 grain soft points, the gun is still in perfect working order.

Yeah. I’ll most likely going with a Glock (19, 23, or 22). If I can’t handle the 40 cal, it’ll be the G19 (a favorite that I’ve shot accurately with). Springfield XD9 lineup is excellent too! In fact, my first 2 guns I plan to get so far will be… 1. Glock 19, Glock 22, or Glock 23. I hope I can do well with any of the 40 cal Glocks since they can chamber 9mm and .357 Sig too with certain barrels. Whatever I choose here will also have a CAA MCK or MC Karbine. 2. Springfield XD9 Subcompact Then an AR-15 in 5.56, an AR-10 in .308, and a pocket pistol in no particular order.

Good video. I would say first is a fire arm that isnt regulated. That you dont have to pay with a credit card or they file your name away. I went with a savage 30.06 for my 1st. After that a bushmaster ar 15. Then a Remington 700 7mm than a side arm springfeild XDM. 45acp. Reason was because I lived in md when I got the 30.06 Lived in va when I got the M4 And my current state the 7mm and .45acp When I move again, I'm looking for constitutional carry so then I can train in a class setting (personal ideally) without fear of being on a list. And if that isnt doable I'll have to keep training alone I guess.

I have a Beretta M9, managed to haggle it down 100 bucks from the asking price and I couldn't be happier (paid around 600). Does everything I could want and then some, just mildly salty that post election they're 100 dollars even less than what I paid lol.

I bought a TGI AMD 65 on an FEG receiver for $400, and sent it to Jim Fuller of RD and had him spiff it up. Best investment I ever made. My main pistol? Glock 19. My lightweight concealed carry pistol? S&W Shield 9mm. Those three guns I will trust with my life.

Why does it need to be an economical reason behind owning just one? I used to own a lot but decided one day I wasn't a collector and didn't want to keep things in the house I wasn't actively using so I downsized everything to 1. A lot of people will fear about it breaking and you're stuck with nothing. But the way I figure it you have the same chance of it breaking whether you own 1 or 100 but regardless of it breaking or not, you want it to break while training rather than it breaking when you need it the most. It's like owning a car. Most people only own one but if it breaksdown, you want to get it repaired and you can plan things out rather than keeping it sitting in the garage and on the most important day having to scramble to find a transportation because it broke down. The way I see it if you're using it often you'll likely build confidence that it'll work when you need it the most.

also buying a good quality gun on the used market is usually a good idea, just inspect it, make sure there's nothing wrong with it. I've seen Sig 226s for 5-600 on the used market.

I would add the Walther PPQ in 9mm with the 4 inch barrel to the utterly reliable, easy to carry and easy in the hand category.

Exactly why I choose Glock. Reliability, reliability, then cost. I’m not a fanboy just practical. I have built up 6 different options for myself and various situations. They are all different Glocks, and what I like vet besides reliability is no mater which pistol I grab, they are all the same just a different size. Works for me. To each their own.

After the practicality of a pistol for away from home, I am really becoming sold on the PS90 for home defense. Of course it and the ammo are expensive.30 banging rounds in the clear mag let you see how many rounds you have left and gives you close to long gun stopping power. Bullpup short barrel design makes clearing the house more practical than any long gun while increasing your ability to retain possession. Ambidextrous and can be shot with one hand.

Good stuff. I always tell people to at some point buy a revolver. As it’s effective and reliable and I might get blasted for this buuuut it’s not likely to get banned. Most of the capacity restriction I hear revolvers fall short of and it’s typically considered reasonable to own and use.
