If You Could Only Buy One Gold Coin, What Would It Be?

Similar to the topic, "what's the best gold coin to buy?", we're going to look at the question of which gold coin to buy if you could only buy one, over and over.
And, if you're just looking for a recommendation on which gold coin to buy but don't want to sit through the video and any inevitable ads, it's simple: 1oz American Gold Eagle or American Gold Buffalo (I like the Buffalo for the 24K benefits and tax implications in other countries). If the price seems too high on those coins, buy a 1/4oz American Gold Eagle. (Or the coin from your country's or region's mint. E.g., Gold Canadian Maple Leaf if you live in Canada.)
NOTE: I am not a financial planner. I'm just a guy on the internet, talking about precious metals. Always do your own research before buying gold or silver.

The Gold $50 Buffalo is my favorite gold coin. It reminds me of the wild west, native Americans, and American Bison roaming the open plains of the untamed west. A coin that puts the story of frontier America in your hand.

I’m new here ,from uk ,years ago I used to buy 22ct jewellery then a Indian jeweller gave me idea to purchase maples. I brought 5 maples ,later sold one to make jewellery, boy did I regret that ,ever since I’ve wanted to replace that 1 oz coin .Finally last week I brought one though it’s dated 1992 from a jeweller. Been on your channel to see I did good or not .amazed to see all these men collectors and never knew men were into gold as I’m a female. It’s got me wanting buy more 😊

I bought gold from 2013 through 2019, the 1/4 oz American gold eagle was my favorite size mainly due to fitting my budget most of the time. Since my local shop didn't have gold buffalo, I'd buy the gold maple leaf if I wanted 24kt. Back then premiums ran 3%-4% on 1oz gold coins so I'd stick with American gold coins. But 2022/2023 premiums on American gold coins is crazy high so I think I'd consider switching to gold maple leafs if going 1 oz coins. What I also notice was that when gold prices were high, everyone wanted fraction gold coins which made them hard to come by which pushed me to purchase the 1 oz size. At least that was my experience.

I don’t like graded bullion and wouldn’t buy slabbed gold unless I wanted a limited release collector piece, and that would be very rare (and it would have to be higher than MS-69). I’m not much of a collector, though, so I might not be a good person to ask. I’m sure there are coins where it makes sense, but most bullion doesn’t gain any value simply because it’s graded. Good luck!

As spot prices climb I think fractional amounts are better long term buys since it’ll be easier to move if you need to sell. Not many people can afford 5+ grand in one shot if prices continue to climb. Same thing for silver and why those large kilo bars are impressive, but they aren’t as desirable as prices climb.

I agree. I knew l needed to jump into collecting before prices started going up, and on my limited budget, l knew l had to make each purchase count. I agree the American buffalo 24K and U.S. Backed. But since we live in a world with too many options I like to have a variety instead of repetitiveness it gets boring so bars and other mints are fine with me. I also get the same answer from NY Metro bullion dealers and they tell me the same to go with the AGE. Maybe its because thats all they sell. Seems to me there is no character in doing that, so I buy what I like and when I really feel my investment senses kicking in I go back to eagles and buffalos. I probably have more Australian gold coins than any others. However, if I had to buy 1 kind, it would be AGE’s. Typically purchase was 1/10th & 1/4oz because I’m not usually able to cough up 1.5k and 2k per transaction. Since the recent rise in spot, 1/2oz & 1oz AGE make up my buys because I’m saving a little longer to avoid the 1/10th premiums. I also enjoy 5g & 10g Pamp/Valcambi bars in both Au/Pt. As an aside, something tells me platinum is very cheap these days..

The American gold Eagle, Many would disagree but the marriage of gold n copper is beautiful. Plus the eagle is a little Bigger and heavier, not by much but when you see a little bit of that copper rising to the surface that's called character With a cluster of so many different colors. The type 1 eagle gets my vote. I'm probably the only one to say the 2nd pick would be the brittania proof, That coin is easy to scratch but if you get a gem, you have one gorgeous coin, and the 3rd would be the older gold maples with that brush back design, You want to talk about millions of colors under a 20 W bulb in a dark room, that coin just pops. Yeah. Preferably the 1967 Kruger but the 50th anniversary restrike could do too. I like the 50 Pesos too. But don't count the French 100 francs Angel out either! It's just over 29 grams but it's wonderful too! But none of the mentioned coins are beautiful in respect to a lot of fine details. They might be big and nice designs but they lack the beauty of very fine details. In this respect there's IMHO nothing like the Danish 10 and 20 kroner 1908-1912 with Fr. VIII or 1913-1931 with the slightly less beautiful obverse of Chr X but same reverse as earlier. Modern proof coins might be technically flawlessly polished but they IMHO still flat boring computerjobs without rich artful detailing. The old ones has a ton of details especially in the great shield - simply stunning when you look in a 20x magnifier at a good uncirculated sample struk with new dies. Oh well. I'm not forbidden to have more than one gold coin so I do have som random years Kruger, 20 franc Angel and of course a small stack of the Danish coins as they're locals to me (low premium here as well). I once had the oportunity to buy the 1967 Krug locally. Still regret I didn't.

The one thing everyone is forgetting about shtf situation is if the Dollar is useless how does one know what's the value of the Gold is going to be? I assume the market place will determine the value. In that case, the purity of the Gold coins might make a difference. I opt for 24k fractional coins and I don't think which mint made them. Spanish coins were used as money before the US had its own coinage. Same with British coins. Stak what you are comfortable with,it will all work out in the end.

There is something so beautiful about the buffalo and the maple. Especially from a folklore and historian point of view. American eagles are very “post colonialism” mentality, where as the Buffalo (IMO) and the native chief is pre colonial America thriving and rich in resources. Maples are the same that it just has a beautiful touch of nature and natural resources that the land thrives from for life giving resources plus made of gold gives a fundamental power source

Since I live in Canada I buy whatever Maple Leaf I can at the time. Sometimes it is 1oz, sometimes it is 1/10oz, sometimes it is 1/2oz. Sometimes I wanna throw money into Bitcoin, sometimes I need to buy an AC, sometimes I make a little more, sometimes a little less. But I tell you this: every month I buy gold. A gold maple in some form. For me it’s a monthly buy. Every month. Which one do I buy? Do I buy one or a couple? Just depends.

Personally, i like the 1oz eagle. But i have been giving thought to fractional for the same reasons you have listed here. I'm always hesitant, due to premiums. I figure if i can pay the premiums, i can just fork out a little more for the full oz, and save more in the long run. Again, gold is a savings vehicle, not an investment vehicle.

If I could only buy one it would be the $5 indian gold half eagles. I know you’re paying more of a premium and it’s not pure 24k but the history and look of the coin is what attracts me. They will become more and more rare as time goes on and it is a fractional size.

I'm stacking for very long term and something like a dollar collapse, so I'm not concerned with what a shop owner might want when things are slow. But what am I going to buy for a full ounce of gold? Five months of food? If I had to choose one kind of gold coin, it would be something 1/4 oz, and I presently prefer Kangaroos.

That's hard to say... I guess you kind of take the 'market' approach and think in terms of what maybe would be 'easier' to sell. It's gold, it will always sell. It's one of the most liquid commodities there is. That being said. I personally enjoy the Australian zodiac coins. In the one ounce they are quite nice. The 2020 and the 2121 are very different in size which I find to be interesting. The animals are fun and the Queens portrait is against a shiny back ground. I guess really any coin should be interesting in some way for it to be a collection; rather than just an acquired asset like a bar.

Perth Mint has great coins. I bought 1/10oz and 1/20oz lunars for my kids, but they lose so much detail at that size. I wish the US Mint had an interesting series. I'm looking for a new one (I don't want to try to pick up a past series at a premium).

I recall the Krugerrand selling for around ZAR 1,000 for a 1oz in 1987. Now it sells for around ZAR 33,000. That is something like an annual 11% return for 33 years ! Of course the devaluation of the ZAR relative to the USD also helped push this return. But, for South African's holding this coin, it certainly did its job as a store of wealth

Honestly I don't like the quality and design of US Mint even the Buffalos. I compared the coins from other countries and sad to say the the US coins have the worst looking coin designs compared to other Mints from other countries. I don't get easily offended so you don't need to be politically correct with me. Reason I chose the Maple over other coins is because of it's purity, simplicity yet quite a beautiful design of the leaf not the Queen & easy convertability to other other currency because it's recognized internationally. Can't say the same for US coins due to it's purity for the Gold AE & unrecognizability for the Gold Buffalos.

The 1 oz vs the 1/4 oz gold eagle--->>> I'd agree with you on the 1/4 oz since jewelers love putting those in necklaces and other nice jewelry. However, overseas in Asia, they won't pay much for gold eagles because they only like 24k gold coins from what my neighbor from HK says. i do not have any but I hope to buy some buffaloes some day. I thing they are better then the maples. The lunars (dragons, snakes, tigers, etc) are also very very nice. Gold now is very high at $2,393/oz or higher. Soon, 1 oz will be more costly then a car!

for investment purposes the 1oz Krugs are the best choice beacause they are cheaper. Their selling spread including their buying premium is way less that an eagle or a buffalo and Krugs are still very popular in the US and around the world. i thought 1/4 oz gold would cost more if you think in terms of proportion for each quarter ounce price to a 1 ounce one. buffalo would be great if I can get it below the spot price. 1/4 ounce would be for what remains in my portfolio. there's more to an ounce than to 1/4 ounce in price saving. selling the 1/4 ounce is much easier than the one-ounce piece. if you think my take is right, plz correct me if you think otherwise. love your assay.

I collect all gold eagles. For SHTF, 1/10 oz is best. Yes, higher premium, but can easily make many denominations. Then I would say 1/4 oz for the same reason. Now, for just storing wealth, lower premium, then 1 full oz. My 2 cents or that’s my 1 oz worth.

I'm on an SSDI check so I can't afford to shell out for one ounce coins. Yet I bought ten 10th ounce coins for a SHTF situation because it would be more liquid. Right now, they would go for almost $200.00 each. One could barter with that should the dollar become worth less than the paper it's printed on and the same is true for junk silver.

Or we germans just buy and hold it 🤠 For me I decided to go with some LMU coins like the vreneli and the Wilhelmina. For me it’s not just the coin value I also like the history and learn something. For stacking I have some silver tubes. Here I have also the eagle, because I like how it looks like... it’s not so clean and modern as other buillion coins.
