Why I Stopped Buying 22k Gold - 24k vs 22k Gold Coins

24k vs 22k gold and why I stopped buying 22k gold coins to focus on 24k gold instead. I bought American Gold Eagles almost exclusively for nearly a decade before switching to Gold Buffalos and other 24k gold coins. I'm not done with Eagles and I don't have anything 22k coins in general, but this is what I'm up to currently.

Here in New Zealand, Eagles are subject to Goods and Services tax (15%), which you don't recover when you sell unless you're registered for GST. (Unlikely). So lose 6% and another 15% immediately. Pure is the only sensible option.

Call me crazy, but I just like the 22k better. For one, most 24k is very reflective…proof, or near proof. I prefer a matte finish. Also, I like coins that look like coins, so more often, actual 19th-20th century coins (Double eagles, 100 Coronas, 50 pesos, etc). Also, the copper alloy in older coins give the gold a slightly orange glow that I love. The yellow in 24k is just not as pretty to me. I love the idea of having a very pure coin, but I just don’t like the way they are made as much.

0:00 🤔 Choosing between 22 karat and 24 karat gold coins involves considering aesthetics, popularity, and potential tax implications. 5:42 📊 Popular gold bullion coins like American Gold Eagles and South African Krugerrands are 22 karat, but preferences may vary based on region and buyer demographics. 7:56 🛡 Newer buyers may prefer 24 karat coins for their aesthetics and security features, while older buyers may stick to 22 karat coins due to familiarity and availability. 8:09 💼 Security features, tax implications, and personal preferences play a significant role in determining whether to invest in 22 karat or 24 karat gold coins. 8:55 💰 Despite differences, both 22 karat and 24 karat gold coins remain valuable investments, with individual preferences influencing purchasing decisions.

Have we established that those coins in Smaug’s lair are 24k? Based on the rest of Tolkien’s world, it is more akin to the Middle Ages, which would mean it’s definitely not pure. But it’s also fantasy, so who knows. I think Stephen Colbert needs to weigh in on this.

I'm probably different than most here, I have always loved the look of the old 90% US gold. My recent purchases have been Buffaloes and that's not likely to change for my next purchase.

New buyers go for pretty coins. They believe that pretty makes em more valuable. If you do some homework you find out differently. Experienced buyers will not turn down a kruggerand or a type one eagle. They know that the entire world recognizes these bullion coins. New buyers might go for an artsy coin with lions and tigers on it. Its a tell. Noob.

I prefer 24K as well for the reasons you mentioned here. The newer sovereigns are alloyed with more copper, so they have a rose color to them which is different and almost looks like copper on comparison to one alloyed with silver and a little copper. There's something about pure gold.

With some countries hitting you with a value added tax on 22k it only makes sense to stack your country of origin’s 22k coin only being they aren’t taxed in your country. 24k is tax free internationally so it makes the most sense to have 2/3rds of your stack 24k. Like the silver folks call junk silver sometimes, “Spending Silver”. 90% silver or 999.9 silver. It’s all about utility and purpose. Diversifying is wise but don’t get to heavy into something that is potentially punitive. Cheers 🥃

I feel like they have a real story to them I imagine someone had them hidden for a long time lol. I also like how much bigger they are it feels like I'm holding pirate gold. The Canadian Maples just look so boring with the 2022 stamp and they are so small. For me the tinge on the krugs and the slight wear and age is just so much more appealing. Buying one Krug a year plus Sovereigns I think that's enough 22K for me and the rest is pure Gold. I just love that soft yellow glow of .9999....nice!!!

Such a good video. I’m always rethinking what I like the most. And as for design and security features it’s the Britannia over the maple. I like the Buffalo over the Eagle mostly for its pure golden look and It’s not something I would be dinging up, but those Eagle’s are solid and have a nice look and I actually like the large head eagle on the reverse. I want to buy other coins but I’m not in any hurry right now

I’m newer to stacking and just started last year. I’ve never been into a coin shop and only shop with Apmex, JM Bullion, Bullion Exchanges and SD bullion. So I ensure I’m buying from a reputable place and I always check prices against all of those sites before making a purchase. I also purchased a sigma metalytics and test every coin. I started with AGE and of course wanted one of type 1 and 2 so had to get both of those. Then got two buffalos. I then got drawn into the other mints and the fact they are 24k so I got Britannia, maple leaf, Royal arms, etc. got some fun ones too like year of the tiger stuff and a Scrooge McDuck one because it had nostalgia for me since I grew up on that show and always wanted a money bin haha. I buy whatever looks cool to me but I don’t spend way over for proofs or anything. If I’m gonna drop 2k on a coin, I go with whatever excites me. For example, I want a gold libertad but it’s 3500 and I think to myself ok I can buy almost two ounces of something else. Hopefully when 2022 libertads come out I can snag one for not too much premium.

@@patrioticstacker I've been in this game for almost 20 years, I love eagles, I'm an eagle man. I used to prefer 24 karat, I started out with maples and then I really started to love the mix of copper and gold and I went straight to eagles and krugers. I also have a lot of the lucky coins and lots of sovereigns. There's a reason why all sovereigns are a mix of copper and gold. I dropped a 1984 1 oz gold Maple and the Dent was horrific, if I would have dropped a one oz eagle it probably wouldn't even have dented. But anyways that's not the reasoning, I just like copper n gold mixed together, it's just a more refined look to me.

Events in the world recently tell us that USA isn't the most influential in the world; China/Asia influence dictates that 24k gold is more liquid in more areas. Same goes for the countries that dislike America. If it comes time to sell, yes, sell inside local, but at least the Maples/Kangaroo are everybody's friend and pretty inoffensive on the outside. However, USA has their own form of tax on anything that isn't an Eagle, so you are kind of screwed either way. Go for variety.

Micro-engraving + soft 24K gold seems like a recipe for disaster when it comes to spotting a fake. Personally, I like the hardness and ubiquity of Am Gold Eagles plus a simple ping test will confirm it is genuine. I'd venture a guess that neither lead nor Tungsten can make the resonating sound of an eagle while also meeting the dimensional and weight requirements. But yeah, 24k definitely looks better!

OK, I'm getting tired of explaining this: American Gold Eagle and American Gold Buffalo coins BOTH contain ONE OUNCE OF PURE 24K GOLD! For the love of , grow a pair and back me up on this point! BOTH COINS contain one ounce of 24K gold. The ONLY difference between the two coins is that the American Gold Eagle contains an additional 0.09 ounces of a copper/silver alloy that adds much-needed durability to the coin; therefore, its total weight is 1.09 ounces per coin. And that is why it is rated at 22K gold... because even though it has a FULL 24K gold content, the added alloy changes the rating for the whole coin to 22K... BUT IT STILL CONTAINS A FULL OUNCE OF 24K GOLD! JUST LIKE THE GOLD BUFFALO! What is so hard to understand about this point? An American Gold Buffalo is ONE OUNCE EVEN of pure 24K gold... but nothing else. There is no added alloy added for extra durability. Therefore, it is like a pat of butter. If you sneeze on it or look at it too hard, it suffers a ding, scratch, or dent. (I'm exaggerating, but you get the point.) Prior to 1933, ALL American gold coins included an alloy and were NOT 100% pure 24K gold. Why? Because they could be used in circulation and they needed the extra durability. So please, if you prefer one over the other, that's fine, but be sure to give all the facts to viewers. There is absolutely zero difference in value between the two coins. If anything, the American Gold Eagle might be worth slightly more only because it is so well recognized worldwide.
