My panic attack just striked while I'm driving a while ago. So, just told my self to bring it on and I just tried to calm my vagus nerve by humming and singing 😁 and guess what, my palpitations went away in just 2 mins. To all those who can't drive bec of fear, anxiety and panic attack you can get thru it! I suffered for more than 3 yrs and now i can drive alone again and can go to anywhere i want.

I feel the same and just happened recently. I have been driving for 20 years no accident or problem but then suddenly panic attack stroke 3 months ago. It so sad that have to ask any of my family to drive me for work and walk miles to home. I'm getting exausted because I'm visiting different school everyday . My vulnerability increases my anxiety as I'm thinking of quiting my 21 years of job😭

Nothing beats exposure therapy. You have to go through it to get over it. I had agoraphobia bad until I got tired of it and faced it. I still have some anxiety but it doesn't affect my life the way it did before I started facing it. It's scary but if I can do, you can do it. Let's get it!

What's crazy for me is that my driving anxiety occurs when I'm sitting at red lights and stuck in traffic, just surrounded by cars. I want to escape, but I can't! So in my situation, highway driving isn't that terrible. I've decided I have a desire to always be moving and sitting still/feeling "trapped" is my issue.

I've been driving for years however I've avoided highways and bridges over 10 years due to severe panic attacks. I avoid it all together! Ido drive but only in back roads and even busy areas i avoid. My therapist recommended that i hire a driver instructor to get me back on freeways. I understand exposure is a big key factor but just thinking about it gives me major anxiety. I finally booked an appointment and i have my freeway lessons tomorrow morning. It may sound silly but lets hope it helps.🙏🏼

For me, it's the feeling I have with elevation and open space over the highway, freeway, and long road trips where the terrain is constantly changing. I hate it because I used to not be afraid or never thought about driving. It just happened naturally. Inner-city driving doesn't seem to pose a problem as long as I am on flat land.
@gregmaland6539

I have pretty much the same issue. I was T-boned while driving but did not feel traumatized by it and everything seemed normal at the time. 6 weeks later, I was driving in a new area and was confronted with a very tall and narrow bridge. As I went higher on the bridge, I became increasingly afraid and felt like I was going to lose control. Since that bridge, about 4 months ago, I have had difficulty with driving, especially on freeways that are unfamiliar - which is mainly, I think, because I don't know what kind of bridges or high ramps there might be. I also have had much more of a fear of heights and "unsupported space" in general. So, tall standalone escalators are not fun for me. It's such a shock when you've been driving for 45 years with no problems and suddenly you have a significant phobia that affects your life.

Yes, and the WORST was bridges, am I right? When driving home from a friend's house in NYC I had to drive over the Verrezano Bridge in NYC. Always stuck to the lower level but it was white knuckle time going on to the bridge. I wasn't scared of the bridge failing, it's just that you can't pull over and escape is even harder.

I suffered the same. You need to acknowledge the loud inner voice that's cautioning you. Tell it that there is no danger and that the loud voice itself will cause the danger. Make a deal with the voice. Tell it you will demonstrate and prove there is no danger and ask it to stay quiet for that particular drive. Once you reach your destination, acknowledge the win. Allow yourself to enjoy the win. Be proud and happy. Have a followup chat with that inner voice afterwards.

I wish facing my panic worked. I've had severe panic disorder since 2018. Lost my job, car got repo'd, went in debt. Took a couple years to rebuild. The only thing that changed was that instead of avoiding and pulling over during my panic attacks, now I just drive in complete fear, sobbing, crying, just hoping I make it, facing it as my therapist says. But in 5 years it has not gotten better.

I'm 53 and been driving all my life, from VA to Boston to DC and back and one day 4 years ago I started having panic attacks while driving down the highway. I looked online and there was nothing to help me and my Doctor gave me Valium 5mg and it took the edge off but wasn't strong enough, so over time I took 5mg a day to 10 mg to 15 to 20 to 25mg a day and still struggled to drive. I avoided the highway and roads that were 45 plus and one day the Doc cut me off and wow all heck broke lose. 3 years on Valium and now nothing. Yet I always kept trying to drive, some days I could go 35 and others 45 but I've not been 55 plus in years... I will says this video is helpful but I'm not sure if facing the attack while driving will help but I do agree I feel like I could pass out and I shake and just freak.. I do believe God has given me the strength to keep trying but again this video has me thinking facing the fear and pushing through it might help. I've faced it this far... Keep me in your prayers for I will try driving the high the week and see if I can do as Shaan says..

It started about halfway through my drive , now its the 1st light I come to and I go through about 13 lights on my regular drive home. It's heavy congested traffic to where I will be at the same light 3 rounds before I'm actually up to the light. I've thought about switching jobs and not working in the most congestive area because I think that what started all of this. We have alot of accidents on the interstate that stops traffic so people start getting off the interstate and it makes a 30 minute drive into an hr. Since then, driving has been challenging, once I had to get out of the car in the middle of the tunnel, because I felt like passing out and my vision shrinking. I try sitting through my anxiety these days while driving, but yes, it takes time! Hi Shaan. All your videos have been truly helpful and deeply resonates so much with my own experiences. Was involved in a car accident several years ago on the freeway, which wasn’t my fault but is what triggered my anxiety. I think it makes things even more challenging when you have actually experienced for instance a car accident on the freeway or even passing out in a restaurant, which I did as well. One triggering experience has the ability to affect other aspects of your life. I am hoping this new approach will be more helpful than the ones I’ve tried before.

My anxiety started coming because of the fact of driving in a high altitude, having a sinus infection, my head went back and I started seeing double but I did not pass out. And lack of sleep so when you’re driving it feels like you’re going through space yeah I know that these were basically panic attacks. I’ve been trying to find ways to avoid driving. But since driving is my life, I’ve been trying to find ways to overcome this anxiety or whatever it is, causing me to feel very hot unease at the wheel, exact same feelings that you’re saying. And I did get a clean health from my eye doctor and my doctor did every test known imaginable. Everything came back clear.

A trick I figured out for myself is (distraction). If I know there’s a place I’m gonna drive to that’s gonna possibly cause me anxiety, I’ll buy food (fast food etc) and begin eating it slowly enjoying it BEFORE I get to the area that causes a feeling of fear. And play upbeat music at the same time and do this same practice as often as possible throughout the week or month
@jozefien1702

distraction from feelings is sometimes the cause of anxiety. If when you where younger and went trough stuff and you could not expres your emotions or you did not want to deal with your emotions. The anxiety is like a ball you have been pressing under water and we al now what happens when the ball escapes it hits you right in the face hello anxiety or hello inner child. I think dealing with the emotions is key in the long run not distracting yourself but hea in the begin of anxiety i used to distract myself alot because i did not want to feel it.

For me, it's the risk associated with driving at a high speed. If one thing goes wrong, you're likely dead. Or what if I don't die and I'm permanently disabled? A tire blowout, another driver not looking and merging into you, others suddenly braking, etc. I've tried 'exposure therapy' several times but I haven't gotten over these thoughts. I've been scared of dying on the highway ever since I was a small child. I would look at the big truck trailers passing us and think that going under one was the way I was going to die - it's been horrible to have that very specific thought all these years. Sometimes I fear that it's a real 'vision' into my future. However, I'm perfectly fine on any other roads and I love to drive. But highways are my biggest problem. I want to overcome this.

This information was very helpful. For me, it happened during summer while riding bicycle on a really hot day. That was a year ago. No panic attacs during winter, only while I am out at too hot days. Guess I'm afraid of the sun XD. It happened in the car (that was most terrifying), while walking on the sunny side of the street, riding in a bus, so always outside. Usually, more focus on driving helps most, while stopping and sitting in traffic is more triggering.

Driving was my escape. Till me and my 2 daughters were hit.. there was a long moment in time I thought both my babies were dead. 1.5 yrs later…I haven’t traveled again, nor have I driven further than 30 min away from my home. We leave for a 16 hour road trip tomorrow and the past week I’ve been shut down, isolated and drinking. I’m absolutely terrified inside and everyone around keeps saying, “oh Hanna you’re going to have a wonderful time!..” etc… acknowledging the reason for my worry, but dusting it aside with positive thinking. What you're saying is true, a few weeks ago I was at a red light and started feeling anxious and felt like I was going to passout/disoriented. I've been driving for almost 25 yrs and this is something new. It was happening about half way home, now as soon as I see a red-light, I feel the dread starting. I got on the interstate one day to avoid the red lights and there were so many cars flying by (very congested area) the panic attack started, this is a very dangerous interstate and you do not want to pull over (people have been killed by being hit on the side of the road) so I drove to the next exit and got off and took back roads home. I've been trying a new route ever since to no relief (avoidance) I was Ina drive thru today and it started happening. I don't understand why this is happening all the sudden. Some of it makes me mad and another part makes me want to cry. I do not want to give in and disable myself. That would be the worst thing and I refuse to let this ruin me. This video has given me alot of insight and I thank you. I could go on and on but I won't. You get the idea.

When I drive On the freeway I don’t feel real, my arms don’t feel like they are there I start to think how does my mind remember how to drive how does my mind know what I actually want to do vs Intrusive thoughts. @@AL-ru3nk I understand for me it started with a panic attack in the car in the middle of the night driving home from work my heart rate was so high i tought i was going to die. I know it is the scariest thing but you have to change your mindset and start taking action watch comedy movies that make you laugh try listing to relaxing music when i could not sleep because i got rapid heartbeat in bed i put on 432hz music or typ in relaxing music on youtube download a meditation app. But it will not work if you keep thinking o no i am going to die or other thoughts like this. If you have read claire weekes books have you tried to take action or are you thinking with every step this will not work i am going to have a heart attack. remember it's your mindset nobody can fix this for you only you can. No it is not easy but try taking small steps. Magnesium can also help what did you normally do to relax or what does relax you a hot shower a bath. Also in the beginning i could not watch tv it made me nervouss and could not focus so try to stay away from constsnt stimulation. get your blood levels checked maybe that helps for me everything was fine accept my vitamin D was a bit low so a take vitamin D. Wouw good question. Why do you want to leave ? Leaving will not stop your anxiety because it is not about the place you are in. It is about your feelings and you should be calm to stop the cycle. You are just in an uncomfortable stiutaion nothings more. You might feel very scared but you should know it is just the feelings you should believe will not hurt you so do not resisst because ressist persist. Just try to enjoy what you are doing or the place you are in.

Basically I get behind the wheel around town and feel pretty good. Trouble starts when I hit the main road leaving town or worse still try and drive on any strange road and especially motorways. As soon as know I have to do this my whole body goes into like fear mode. My legs shake and I sweat,then I feel as though the road ahead is not wide enough and now I cannot drive in the dark at all even on my local roads. It’s so bad it now effects my daily life and is costing me a fortune in trains,taxis and buses. What the hell is wrong with me anyone?
