In today's video, we take a real close look at a houseplant begonia - the very tropical looking Begonia Luxurians. I go through all its care requirements and recount my experiences with it, and why I think it makes one of the most fabulous and unusual houseplant Begonias you can get.

Yeah pricing is weird - it's such an easy one to propagate along with most Begonias - that's why it's so cheap over here. You would expect it to be the same over there but there must be some other factor that comes into play. Maybe it's just not well known so no demand - or maybe the opposite - too well known so low demand. Who knows??🤷‍♂️

@@Rastagurl24 Just be careful not to give it too much - or allow it to sit in water. These are drought tolerant plants with thick starchy roots. Better to get a moisture meter and make sure it remains dry for a few days before re-watering.

Thanks so so much for creating the video. I can’t wait till I get mine next week.Yours look stunning and I love the flowers too. If people are growing this in the garden, it doesn’t mind getting water on leaves? If you have begonia venosa, please make a video too! This is very helpful. 😊

You are so welcome! This is a species so it won't have any trouble with water on its leaves outside - it's just inside where it's apparently prone to mildews - no doubt due to lack of ventilation and air movement. I have several fans and so far haven't seen any mildew. I'll have to look Begonia venosa up!
@Gigi-pf6ik

@@Grow_Up_Man55 I moved from Tokyo to subtropical climate in Australia. So it’s much easier to grow plants here. When I get to propagate mine, I’ll grow one outside and see how it goes. Just got venosa but it’s growing just straight up with no side branches at the moment I can’t find good resources how I can propagate tip cutting and was wondering if you have this. Please share the tips in the future if you are interested in this plant. 🌱

@@Gigi-pf6ik I don't currently have that one, but if you take a tip cutting from any Begonia it'll usually root easily, and at the same time encourage the plant you took it from to grow side shoots lower down. It's a win-win!

I fell in love with this plant immediately upon watching this video. I managed to procure one, however I am experiencing some leaf curling. Any ideas on what may be going on with it? I live in Sydney Australia. We have just come out of winter and I got the plant about 6 weeks ago as a young plant. I’ve kept it inside, temp around 15-22 deg next to a window with extra light from an LED. The original leaves are fine, it’s just the new growth that start out fine then begin to curl. A member of a face book group living an hour out of Sydney has one and she suggested putting it outside under shade or in a green house. Other members have said they are fine planted in the garden in shade (in Sydney) and don’t cope well inside
@Grow_Up_Man55

Funny enough, mine has just started doing that too. The only change to my conditions is a drop in night temps to 10 degrees C then up again to a minimum of 17 in the day. They appear not to like the fluctuations. Mine has always struggled below 15 in the past.

I suppose you could grow a few cuttings to pop outdoors in the summer. I tend to grow cuttings almost every year of most bigger houseplants to replace parent plants which are getting too big for the house! Parent plants are then recycled ie composted! 🤣
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's a great idea. Providing it's not too windy it would very cheaply create a very tropical look for the summer months. And I expect they would grow like wildfire if the conditions were right and they were unconstrained by a pot.
@gartmorn

@@Grow_Up_Man55 I don't know if I'd try it here but the tropical themed garden seems to be 'on trend' just now! I would need one of your greenhouses just to overwinter plants if I went down that route. My last house was in a milder area on the gulf stream so I could grow tropical looking plants like fatsia japonica but no chance up here near Perth!
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 2 жыл бұрын
I think Begonia luxurians might struggle! You only get a couple of months frost-free don't you? I'd have thought you'd be OK with a Fatsia though - they can go down to -15°C.
@gartmorn

@@Grow_Up_Man55 I didn't think it would go down to that temp! Might give it a go as it was a big fave in my last garden! Probably June to September frost free although late September could see mild frosts. This year we were into November before we got any frost. Still had pelargoniums and begonias flowering then which is unheard of! Must have been arranged so Glasgow could be in bloom for COP26! 😂

Hi mate, beautiful Lux you've grown here. Mine was doing really well until a couple of weeks ago - loads of strong leaves and rapid growth. Within the last two weeks though, it's had a real meltdown. Only the top leaves have survived, everything else has curled/drooped and gone. I'm now left with four very lanky stems with two or three leaves atop each one. I really want to save it but this is my first one and not sure what to do. I've had it about six months. It's in a pot similar size to yours. It's in a window sill with decent filtered light. I water when the top is noticeably dry (it lets me know when it needs watering). Very high humidity in my flat (50% minimum) and a steady 20-22 Celsius. If you could give any advice I'd really, really appreciate it, as I love this plant and they're hard to come by in London!
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 Жыл бұрын
It’s always difficult to diagnose from a distance but I’ll have a go. I’ve found mine gets curled up leaves from even the smallest amount of sun through glass, even if it’s filtered. I’d say yours might come back to life if you could move it so it gets zero direct sun - if indeed it does get any. If it doesn’t, then try moving it anyway. You need as bright light as possible - but definitely no direct sun. Both the temperatures and humidity are ideal so that’s not your problem. Another thing to try is spider mites. Get yourself a botanist’s hand lens and really inspect the leaves. Many plants eject leaves with only a few mites on them, something I discovered only after losing multiple plants. Good luck!

I have had this plant and ever since I got it it’s been getting worse and worse, the leaves were becoming crispy at the ends and throughout the leaves and some even fell off, I have no taken cuttings from the healthier parts of the plant and put them in water. Hopefully I am able to save it in some way

Yeah it's strange because I hear that a lot. I've never had any issues with it other than I've found it needs to be kept over 15°C, and it can easily wilt, yet doesn't like to sit in water either. I hope your cuttings strike!

Will you be taking off the bubble wrap in the summer ?
@Grow_Up_Man55
@Grow_Up_Man55 2 жыл бұрын
The plan is to leave it all in place. I couldn't possibly remove the inside bubble wrap due to all the plants but the newly wrapped outside should also remain in situ when the weather warms up. It'll provide a little more shade and hopefully help to even out the temperature fluctuations you get in greenhouses. The flip side of course is the reduction in light levels, but the grow lights will help with that.
