The f'd up thing about No One Mourns The Wicked is that Glinda actually knows all the truth and is actually mourning the death of her friend. The high notes and operatic singing are meant to resemble wailing and crying
@laurencole29375 күн бұрын
I thought that the super high notes usually denote that Glinda is putting on a bit of a show. When she is speaking to the other students, to the Ozians here and at the engagement party (beginning of Thank Goodness) etc she always sings these really operatic notes. When it is just her being her truest self (what is this feeling, one short day, popular, I'm not that girl reprise etc) with typically just Elphaba (or Fiyero) she is a lot more in her mix. So you can always tell when Glinda is lying or putting on a mask, because she's singing very operatically.
@hamu085 күн бұрын
@@laurencole2937 that's absolutely true, but I always thought the way she sings in NOMTW feels different than her usual operatic singing. So even though she's masking some of her real feelings end up coming through. Idk, I'm probably wrong but that's how I see it 😅

It's a crime "For Good" hasn't made the cut for either Wicked reaction videos 😭 If it helps tho, here's the chronological order of the songs you've heard so far (spoilers abound): 1. "No One Mourns the Wicked" (this is the opening song, and it starts the story off at the end; Glinda gives a bit of a prologue about Elphaba's backstory during it, and then the rest of the musical is essentially one giant flashback to how we got to this point. A lot of the music often sounds ominous bc it's foreshadowing the 'bad' end that the audience is aware is coming, while the characters are blissfully unaware of their ultimate fate.) 2. "Dear Old Shiz" (Glinda and Elphaba met as roommates in college, so this is the school's alma mater song. Really, it's a transitional song, meant to give the actress for Glinda (Kristen Chenowith in this case) time to quick change from her "Glinda the Good Witch of the North" costume into her school uniform, and to set the stage for a lot of the first act to take place while they're students) 3. "The Wizard and I" (this is the audience's first real introduction to Elphaba, before her life takes its turn for the worse. But the end of the song, her 'vision', is definitely doing a lot of dark foreshadowing for the audience, tho of course Elphaba is still naive about this) 4. "What Is This Feeling" (Elphaba and Glinda's relationship is really the heart of the whole show, and the framing device set up at the end of "No One Mourns the Wicked" is that the musical is essentially Glinda reminiscing about said relationship. As you saw, they....didn't get off on the best foot. XD) 5. "Popular" (basically, there's a song that comes in between this song and "What Is This Feeling", called "Dancing Through Life", where by the end of it Glinda and Elphaba have buried the hatchet, so "Popular" is basically their initial friendship song, and is about Glinda trying to help Elphaba get out of the problem that Glinda partially helped to create in the previous songs) 6. "One Short Day" (this one's pretty self-explanatory, about Elphaba being invited to go meet the Wizard, and she invites Glinda along) 7. "Defying Gravity" (it seems that in the video you partially remembered the Wizard's character from the movie, but here's it spelled out more clearly for you: he's a fraud. He's not actually a Wizard, can't perform magic, and has been lying to the entire population of Oz about that fact. the reason why, back during "The Wizard and I", that the Headmistress of Shiz (the first person you hear singing in that song) was so stoked about Elphaba's powers is that the Wizard wants to use said powers to keep the lie about himself going, as trickery and deception will only get you so far. Also he's a bit of an oppressive dictator and discriminates against some beings in Oz, but that's not really a theme you'll have picked up from what parts of the soundtrack you've heard. Anyway, Elphaba is of course horrified to learn the truth, and wants to denounce him. This song is Glinda and Elphaba arguing about what to do with this revelation---Glinda's stance is to essentially try to change the institution from the inside, even if it means having to rub elbows with unsavory characters, while Elphaba's is to be a revolutionary, and to tear down the whole oppressive system. And bc they essentially agree to disagree and to go their separate ways, whenever you hear the ensemble chorus singing about Elphaba, what you're hearing is the Wizard's propaganda against her at play, so that no one will believe her when she tries to tell the truth about him. So really, HE"S the true villain of the musical, not Elphaba. As a 'story from the villain's perspective' kind of show, Wicked is more in the same vein as Maleficent 2014, where the portrayal is that the 'villain' is more of a misunderstood anti-hero.) 8. "No Good Deed" (basically, the song that's Elphaba's breaking point, as indeed, everything she's done to try to help others has only ended up having negative outcomes, and she's fed up with it and has lost too many people throughout the course of the story. so now she's no longer going to resist the 'wicked' epithet that's been applied to her by everyone else.)

The Emerald City is not actually green. In the wizard of oz (1900) the city is just a normal city but everyone wears green glasses as part of the wizard's deception. Therefore, every person appears green and elphaba doesn't stand out.
@oh.sorry.dont.mind.meeeee5 күн бұрын
No. This is the musical, not the original books. In the musical Wicked the Emerald City is definitely really green. The 1900 L Frank Baum books are not canon for the Wicked universe, as it's an adaptation of the 1995 Gregory Maguire novels, which is a dark reimagining of the world of Oz from the perspective of the wicked witch, and changes many things from Baum's books. And in the musical adaptation Wicked, the Emerald City is 100% actually really green. It's referred to multiple times and we literally see it. Wicked the books and Wicked the musical are not in the same canon universe as the original Baum books and the 1939 movie.
@frogwhisperer42685 күн бұрын
In the stage show, they wear the green glasses. To me, that is evidence that the city is not actually green, even if it's subtext. Besides, the glasses also make other people appear green, and it's obvious that even if the city is green, the citizens are not literally green. That's the more important part for the song, since if Elphaba just wanted to be near green things, she could go touch grass. The reason she is happy is being near green PEOPLE (due to the glasses), not green objects.

I don’t feel like Glinda was bullying Elphaba because they were both singing about hating each other and even though other people were saying mean things they were just following Glinda who didn’t actually say mean things they just didn’t understand it like how everyone is scared of things that are different. Also they couldn’t just avoid each other because they were assigned to the same room so as much as they wanted they new their life’s were intertwined and Glinda didn’t have magic and wanted to work with that teacher to learn it but the teacher only wanted to help Elphaba since she already possessed the power of magic.

For a little context, The reason why no one is surprise by Elphaba's appearance is that in the stage play and original Wizard of Oz book, the citizens of the emerald city and anyone visiting /must/ wear green glasses, so everyone looks like they have green skin while in the emerald city.

So, I just learned this from another channel, the Dragon Clock is a prophetic/magical clock that predicts/announces when something momentous will happen, like the Wicked Witch of the West dying. It's mentioned more in the book that the musical is loosely based off of.

it's so fun to see the reactions from people who don't know the plot of Wicked 😄 my younger sibling didn't remember most of it when we watched the movie and i got to see their face when they realized how sad the line "i swear someday there'll be/a celebration throughout Oz/that's all to do with me" is... please do a part 3 and listen to For Good, it is one of my favorite songs of all time ❤ (and ty for the limp wrist lmaoo you're so right actually)

Glinda's initial dislike was the stereotypical Queen Bee's distaste for the nerdy kid at first, but then it progressed because of envy toward's Elphie's talent with magic. Elphie actually had initial bias, too --- she looked down on Glinda for being a brainless blonde. Neither of them tried to be at least cordial with each other. It comes off really aggressive on Glinda's part in the song, but the pushback Elphie gets from the other students doesn't go beyond excluding her and the popular clique making fun of her behind her back when Glinda brings her up. Yeah, people in general thought badly of her because she's green, but no one ever tried to harm her (beyond exclusion) because of it. Really, it's not the fact that she's green, it's the fact that no one knows WHY she's green. Is it contagious? Is it a new deformity? What hellishness did her mother do that resulted in her being green? Why does it make it so the kid can't touch water? Since she can't touch water, doesn't that mean she can't bathe and is constantly dirty? So it's not actually racism like it seems on the surface, it's discrimination against the disabled. And just like normal ablism, it doesn't really incite aggression/violence but exclusion and condescension. In truth, the majority of her suffering actually came from her home life, with her father not giving a single damn about her beyond how she's taking care of her little sister. Elphie has THE worst case of Eldest Daughter Syndrome with none of the benefit of the parent parentifying her actually being appreciative.

"Dear Old Shiz": This is the "start" of Glinda telling the story of how she and Elphaba met. Shiz is the name of University that they both attend. (Song #2 of the show) "One Short Day": Elphaba gets invited to meet the Wizard because of how talented with magic she is. Elphaba invites Glinda to come with her and explore the city. The song ends with them going in to meet the Wizard, and Elphaba wants to petition the Wizard to help the Animals, all of whom are going mute. This song is after Glinda and Elphaba have become friends. (Song #9 of the show) "No One Mourns the Wicked": This is the very start of the show, "Wicked". It chronologically takes place after the entire rest of the musical is over, specifically after Dorothy melts the Wicked Witch of the West. The rest of the show is Glinda remembering Elphaba's story and her sort of "telling it" to the other citizens of Oz. Also no, the Wicked Witch did not enslave the Munchkins, she ruled over the Winkies. It's also normal for animals to talk in Oz (its part of the world, think about the Cowardly Lion). "What Is This Feeling": Elphaba and Glinda have accidentally become roommates, and they have really only just met and they hate each other at this point in the show. (Song #4 in the show)

both the original glinda kristin and ariana and the author of the original novel agree that glinda and elphaba ARE *wrist* "Roommates"
@masonguthrie12575 күн бұрын
That honestly makes no sense and goes against the story entirely considering it’s about two girls who like the same guy and are “fighting” over his affection. This is just a cheap way to show women supporting women that has been popularized in recent years. I don’t mind having stories about two women falling in love but this is not it and to try and change it just cheapens the story.
@ivanzamarripa93935 күн бұрын
@masonguthrie1257 no ones changing anything, its simply a way to view it. its subtext that can be taken or left alone. if you look at the book for example where fiyero and glinda never meet and instead elphaba and glinda share a kiss, then theres a reason why people would take this a little more seriously. its a fun conversation to have and thats what ariana has been proposing these last few days of press. shes excited at the idea it can be taken that way but no one is claiming its canon. its definitely subtext. especially with the original author saying he considers elphaba and glinda "endgame" but never got around to it because in the book he does fully kill elphaba off
@VeelouC4 күн бұрын
@@masonguthrie1257 what cheapens the story is having two women fight for the attention of a guy. when i saw the play it was the only part that bothered me since glinda and elphaba obviously have a far superior and closer relationship than any fiyero had and are the core of the story. there is tension and romantic subtext in 'what is this feeling' as they feel this intensely for the first time for someone and describing physical reactions like flushing when they see each other. in the book elphaba kisses glinda twice and calls her 'my sweet'. They are OBVIOUSLY queer coded and the dumb love triangle was made for straight audiences since when it came out it wasn't easy to make successful gay love stories, so they erased the kisses and added the love triangle. From your comment you don't know shit about queer coded stories or what wicked is actually about.

To answer your question, from what I've heard about the book, the original was Glinda and Elphaba situationship and when Elphaba leaves, she kisses her, then later gets with Fiyero. In the musical, they're best friends and both just date Fiyero and the timelines were kinda more overlapped than in the book so it muddies up the sexual tension but bc it's an adaptation of a queer thing it still plays.

Felicity must had a really hard time not spoiling the plot with all of your comments that were so close to the musical's message, but still missing such a huge part... PLZ watch the full musical. then try to watch this video again and you'll understand why Felicity deserves such a huge shoutout for not spoiling it to you😂 it was hard for me to not shout the spoilers at the screen, I don't think I would be able to not spoil it to you if you literally asked me all these questions to my face😂

Okay, for clarity but with no spoilers: This musical is told from two different timelines. The whole show starts with No One Mourns the Wicked, which takes place right after Elphaba's death is announced - you know, the melting during wizard of oz. And then Glinda is the one who starts going back and telling their back story - so the whole rest of the show is kind of one big series of flashback sequences. And yeah... one could say that her 'evil' is somewhat exaggerated and that Miss Glinda is ...playing along a bit to keep her image as the good witch. But they definitely start off being annoyed with each other before being best friends haha

Every time I hear no one mourns the wicked, I think of that one time the show was about to start, but they had to deliver the news of queen Elizabeth. So they had to give a little speech where they said that they would not change the coure of the musical, but for people to take it with a grain of salt, because the musical opens with "good news, she's dead."
