Algumas outras palavras poderiam ser "elucidar" (elucidate), "propício" (propitious), "latente" (latent) e "Inócuo" (innocuous) 😊.

Almost every single one of those words has a cognate in English that means the same thing, and the ones that didn't (only 2!) I was easily able to figure out from Latin root word meanings... If you have an advanced English vocabulary, advanced vocab in Latin languages is often easier to pick up than the basic stuff (which in English is often Germanic rather than Latin-based)

Eu acertei 14 de 15. O português, pelo facto de ser muitíssimo semelhante com o espanhol é muito mais simples de aprender para um falante nativo do espanhol. Em espanhol, também existem aquelas palavras e nesta oportunidade significam a mesma coisa (não são falsos cognatos).

Acertei 14/15, dessas não tinha certeza sobre 4 (exímio, pernicioso, impreterível, vicissitude) :) É interessante notar o quanto o conhecimento de outros idiomas ajuda! Pelo menos três das palavras sobre quais eu não tinha certeza são quase as mesmas em inglês (eximious, pernicious, vicissitude) e claramente vêm do latim. Só não conheci a palavra inefável - ineffable - nem conheci em inglês, então hoje aprendi esta palavra em duas línguas graças a este vídeo, kkk, valeu!

For instance "Disseminar" is really easy to understand for a french speaker as we say "disséminer" in french, same for "propagar" ("propager"), but "difundir" ? If the question was "what does "difundir means ?" with no synonym to help I would have been completely incapable of answer ! 😅 There is the same things in english: for a french speaker formal english words are often way easier to understand than informal ones, because what sound formal in english is often just an informal french word read with a different pronunciation. E. g. : "to get" = "to obtain" in formal english and "obtenir" in (informal) french ; another one: "whole" (informal) = "entire" (formal) = "entier" (informal french).

Isso! Na verdade eu só uso alguns desses cognatos em inglês, pois são palavras mais usadas em contextos mais acadêmicos. Por isso não tenho certeza quais palavras eu adicionaria. Normalmente com os cognatos, o uso em português pode ser acadêmico/formal ou não, mas quase sempre vai ser mais acadêmico/formal em inglês. Por exemplo, “desistir” -> “to desist” mas é mais comum dizer “to give up”. “Matricular” -> “to matriculate” mas é mais comum dizer “to enroll”. Achei muito engraçada a palavra “vicissitude” do vídeo porque tem um cognato em inglês que é escrito da mesma forma mas não sabia o significado em inglês antes de assistir vídeo. 😅

The paradox: the more complicated the word, the easier it is to understand, at least in the present case, for English, where every "difficult" word has an English cognate that gives the game away. And I suspect that no one, in either language, uses those words anyhow, certainly not regularly. Mostly for impressing kids, I suspect. The more truly difficult words in Portuguese: "de" "em" "para" "por", "a" and the use of the articles: all those tiny, nasty words waiting to betray you at every second!

@@SpeakingBrazilian I guess the problem with prepositions in any language, certainly in English & Portuguese, is that they should be learned in some sort of context. We usually think of "vocabulary" as being equal to individual words, dictionary entries, but it might make more sense, for example, to teach specific combinations of verbs with prepositions, as I note you have done. I'm not sure about your suggestion that the words in your list are rarely used in English because they come from Latin. Maybe that's true, I had never considered that. Is it your sense that these same words are more commonly used in Portuguese? Anyhow, maybe it would be fun and instructive to compile a list of words that are NOT drawn from Latin, perhaps from indigenous languages. (And I know you've done some presentations along these lines, as well) Where else does Brazilian Portuguese come from? What about German? Or African languages?

What I've noticed over the many decades speaking Brazilian Portuguese and communicating with my family and friends and cousins in Brasil... Is that Brazilians have a propensity of consistently "modifying" or "adding words" to their Portuguese language... We watch a YT channel show called "Panico" and we noticed that the host and co-hosts will many times speak words that are either very slang modified Portuguese words... Or they "steal" an American English word and make it Portuguese! It's actually fun to try and decipher what the latest words are they are speaking!

Another observation is knowing parts of words and their meaning...for example "Pernicioso" I see the "oso" and remember "Perigoso"... I know them all. Nothing to be surprised about for I am a native speaker of Spanish and English is my second language. I also speak Italian. But I am very careful to use them in Portuguese because I am not always sure of their right spelling, as happens with myriads other words in the Portuguese-Spanish realm. This happens because Portuguese and Spanish share 86% of similitude, which turns Portuguese into a colossal FALSE FRIEND for Spanish speakers. Excelente!👏👏👏 It’s very interesting that most of these words have a cognate in English, but I think they are rarely used in English because they come from Latin. This is great news for English speakers. If you pay attention, you’ll notice that Portuguese and English aren’t that different after all. :) What other words would you add to the list?

How about “obséquio”. Exímio nobody use. Iminente is very close to eminente.
