Fair warning, this shoe has a really small toe box. I just tried them at a demo today and dear Jesus my pinky toes were mad

Thanks for this comment! My VSR tends to get to big for me in the small toe area after the break in. i think the dragos might be perfect for me then!

So I recently made it onto the youth competitive team at my gym. I was told I need hooked-toed shoes as it is bouldering season near me and they are better with overhangs. I brought a pair and tested them out. All is well. But I’m not sure when the right time is to wear flat shoes versus my curved shoes. We are going to be doing ropes eventually. Any advice?

Flat is typically better for climbing on volumes or being more comfortable when climbing. Vs aggressive shoes are better on an overhang or when you need to dig your toes into a hold to stay on the wall.

1st of all, congratulations on joining a youth team…just to oversimplify and frame the (2) extremes: Edging and smearing demand a lot of weighted pressure dumping into the shoe, so you may favor something flat and supportive* over something asymmetric, downturned, and soft Toeing down and pulling through the toe demand a lot of articulated pressure and tension through the toe like your grasping footholds as if with your fingers, so you may favor something soft, sensitive* and downturned over something stiffened for support *Given the wide market of shoe producers and each of their diverse product lines, the choice between supportive or sensitive is not strictly binary, but these are the general uses that inform the choice between a ‘supportive’ vs ‘aggressive’ shoe; depending on how new your shoe is you can still smear in downturned aggressive shoes and still toe down like a ballerina in stiffened supportive ones

i wear 9.5 street and i got a 41.5 depending on if your typically a wider foot or leaning towards size 10 i would go 42 but if you are leaning towards size 9 (or like really tight tight shoes) i would get a 41
