As the Buddha knew, stress can never be removed from life, so the mindful person seeks a way to remove oneself from the effects of stress. It is such a basic lesson. Thanks for your very articulate exposition on this phenomenon, Russell.

When I'm really stressed out, I think of the vastness of the universe and how small and insignificant we really are in the grand scheme of things. Kind of a cosmic version of the serenity prayer. I too think of the universe and how enormous it is, beyond our understanding. And when I think "oh it's just another boring day" I rethink "well it's a totally different day cause we are constantly moving thru space so we are always moving forward"... Then walking at night for 50 minutes with headphones on and admiring nature really helps me feel happy.

The best way to reduce stress is to remove the causes of stress from your life. Anything else is a poor substitute, no matter how much Jedi training you think you have. i.e. If you are living with an abuser, you have to break free. Do not go along thinking that you have to learn to accept their behaviour and adapt to it.

Russell, Loretta LaRoche’s TEDx talk “How to Humor Your Stress” is a great watch. She’s a Sicilian woman from NY who talks about during WW2, and even during a depression, nobody even used the word “stressed.” They laughed a lot, they saw neighbors and friends, and they had coping mechanisms we don’t use anymore. I think there’s wisdom in that. We’re often coping with the wrong things in today’s technological world, feeling more isolated-and feeling like there’s nothing that can be done about it. You mention tribes and it’s true-we once had villages. Our partners/mates/husbands/wives weren’t our “everything,” we had other people to talk with, to be mentored by, to get charity from and give charity to. I think if life becomes too stressful, which it really can, one might need to dismantle and reassemble one’s life, perhaps in stages and as a journey, until it becomes something more joyful. PS I’m really enjoying your new videos a lot… and we met a long time ago at the “Get Him to the Greek” world premiere in LA. You were supremely engaging with people. (So telling of you as an authentic human.) There was another actor (not to be named) who was not having any of it. But, you were genuinely interested in the people there no matter who approached you. Much appreciation for your sage wisdom in your videos. [ insert smiley face emoji here! ]

At the end of the day, it’s either gossip or truth...what bothers me about Scientology is the smut thrown at it yet you see nothing going down yet more publicity for Leah who is an awesome actress. Through the years you see traffickers get taken down and bad eggs do get eaten, but because brand turned down Scientology because he believes in other forces, who is to blame? Religion is a hard thread to break so no point in debating unless you are up front with facts rather than conjecture or general hypothesis. Harvey did get taken down and metoo did become a thing....

I have been a Buddhist for many years and listen to many teachings, along with reading Dhamma based literature. I suffered terribly with anxiety as a result of extreme abuse by my stepfather and bullying at school due to my ethnicity as a child and consequently struggled to cope with life until my mid 20’s. I have now coping strategies in place that have helped me enormously to face life positively and with hope and much happiness. You Russell are a genuinely compassionate, empathetic and giving person and your words voice much of what I think and feel and this video is a confirmation that I am on the right path. I am extremely fortunate to be able to see the goodness in mankind and to be touched by the kindness of others, however small. Materialism makes us stressed out. The more you have, the more you have to maintain. The more you have, the more you want. I get a feeling of elation when I go from discovery, desire, and then acquisition. I've been trying to simplify my life and live more minimal. The more complex a system becomes the more chaotic it gets. I've been trying to acquire experiences other than possessions. I feel like getting drunk when I'm stressed (but I don't!). I try to keep things in perspective and remain calm.

Lisa Kukla, don’t we all like to be winners sometime. It’s apreciated from me that you think that. Moreover I’d appreciate your life more. It’s my ambition to homestead. To live less in the superficial world of material. To live of my land to have goats to grow my own to stay in a modest dwelling. The idea to swap our lifestyles isn’t a theoretical one. Truly I’d want it to be practical.

@@ArnoldClarke That's my goal as well, and the reason I'm dealing with all these exploitative and otherwise toxic people. The easy way would be to go back to the city and into government housing. At least then when my propane tanks are empty or my roof is leaking, I wouldn't have to decide between fixing it and eating that week. Maintenance would be a simple phone call away. Materialism isn't the only cause of stress. Anyone who would make such a statement as above has surely lived quite a privileged and insulated life.

I know that the constant competition at work, school, or just personal unrealistic standards makes it difficult to cope with stress and anxiety. It is also important to understand your limitation. As for me, I am a bit of a perfectionist & tbh, it causes more unnecessary stress. Part of wellness is understanding the emotional component which is the ability to manage stress by recognizing feelings pinpointing the root cause for your stress levels and making changes to reduce it. Obviously, it not an overnight fix, it is something that can be managed with implementing better habits. This really helped me to understand how wellness is not just feeling well but it is as a whole mentally, physically, socially, emotionally, being well. Anyhow, enjoying your videos, keeps me in the right headspace. Thank you soo much for sharing!!

As I’ve come to place where a lot of what Russell teaches I’m learning, have learned... I often find myself alone in this new place of awareness/self observance. Now I’m not lonely, and there are people who understand the concepts but there are people who immediately become overwhelmed at the thought of digging down deep into who they are, why they feel the way they feel. I often use metaphors and examples of all of the tasks in life we perform automatically and how those subroutines also play a major role in our thought patterns/habits. However, I remain encouraged to at least discuss and promote deeper personal discovery, acceptance, introspection from a third person perspective as our higher conscious self is the viewer and the listener. Very much how we perceive other people’s actions and interactions with others and in the cases we place judgement or criticism we often seem to already have an answer or the response of I would do this or that differently. Or “why would they do that to themselves?!” However, as we turn inward; for those of us whose thoughts seem to be louder and in more control, the task of processing the feelings turns into becoming a slave to feelings and emotions. Especially and more notably, negative thought processes and behavioral patterns which I would say predominantly operate out of fear. (As a side note: I believe everything falls under fear or love. In believing that I often reflect or observe in that moment where the feelings are coming from and it’s usually quite easy to tell. ) We know when we have problems in our homes, with our cars, and with our bodies we have to address them otherwise the issues could get worse and lead to even more difficulties. However, that same practice should be applied to the mind. As you begin to face fear, anxiety, step back and observe yourself and dig deep down as to why and understand that these are thoughts, cognitive processes that require revisiting restructuring. As for the thoughts that are mostly negative, I consider them delusions or over exaggerations of our fears/concerns. It becomes a challenge to alter and create new behaviors and responses that stem from that steady and clear observation. We are meant to feel emotions, but our internal thoughts should not cause us to feel ill, down, etc. A shift to facing oneself and challenging those unfruitful and debilitating mental/emotional manifestations with very grounded “present” minded clarity to see that all along, we could have processed all negative thought much like happy experiences. By that I mean accepting all experiences, accepting all that occurs outside of your thoughts and actions, and by working diligently to live a life your spirit desires unhindered by delusions and empowered by engaging in your life with clarity and acceptance. I view this conflict of the spirit and mind as a great comfort that my body and my spirit are alerting me with warning signs at onset of accepting negative thoughts (specifically ones that lead to anxiety, stress, or depression.) I’m still in the beginning of this journey, but the moment my thoughts attempt to return with the noise of negativity, I look at them and shut them down like two terrible friends sitting on the couch next to me giving me terrible advice. As for people who have trouble accepting, understanding, or rejecting the concepts of awareness and observation; deeply saddens me. As I observe them I can almost see defense mechanisms pop up to protect and validate deeply negative behaviors, and thought patterns. I deeply empathize and I can only hope to incite self discovery and questioning. Thanks to your videos I feel comforted and relieved that there are people who are deeply passionate about mental health and working to do their part for humanity. One love! Thank you for this video and all others you’ve posted. Cheers!!

Thank you for saying this. Chronic stress is such a problem. I don’t remember feeling this stressed prior to smart phones when I could leave my work at work, facebook was still fairly innocent, and I wasn’t being bombarded by fear and expectation in the media. I personally left the job I didn’t believe in and am fairly successful but even so there is still the rat race and awareness of problems in our world that seem too big for any of us to change individually. There used to be a time where we could just focus on our immediate community and making efforts to better that community, but now we are so interconnected by media, it feels that our efforts locally are no match to the global media paradigm.

Captivating.... The stress - react with consumption cycle is just crazy and needs holding up in your face sometimes. You can so easily slip into that horrible pit. You also got me with stress = anger / fear / anxiety. Thanks Russ, you are clarity in the fog. 🙏🏻

I love your videos. I’m grateful you have chose to give back to others by sharing what you have learnt and studied. It’s obvious you are a very curious person about life. These help so many people that may not have the finances to hire therapist. I’m impressed with your knowledge and how you continue to search for answers. I hope you realize what a great thing you are doing. Plus it’s not just your personal experiences, it’s the knowledge you have researched to back it. You have worked hard on this stuff. Thank you.

Thanks for respecting the rooms and being vague. Too many stars don’t keep their yappy traps shut at the level of press, radio and film. I know quite a few famous people in the deal and they’re always low key- i hope there is a conversation about that in your circles... all my best :) people will find what they need- the rooms are there

Tyler Frauenfeld Spirituality IS logical - we just don’t have the knowledge or vocabulary yet to express it, but they are one and the same. That’s what’s wrong with so many religions - they split spirit and matter - big mistake.

I find Sailing Racing as a great way to reduce stress... the comradererie and Improvisation problem solving, and communion with water and the abyss, makes it calming. We take PTS Survivors out on Lake Michigan for just this point. I'd wonder if Russel has been out Sailing. We could hitchhike on a Chicago sailboat sometime on Lady Lake Michigan! ;)

I used to experience a lot of stress for years. I learned to work on myself and got rid of all of it. I taught myself, with time, to have faith that things will work out, because I learned self trust and self respect,- traits that make me feel safe about juggling whatever situation or person approaching me with a problem. So I feel safe in myself because I know I have the power to be in control of how I feel. Also, when it comes to feeling unsafe and not grounded in the world, I learned that starting to feel gratitude for what I do have has helped a lot. Also, learning to let go of anything that I can't control. And having faith that what's meant to be is meant to be and it's all for the better :)

Once again, on point like an arrow Russell! Not a pessimist, just a thinker, like you. Can the Dalia Lama achieve zen if he had chaos around him 24/7? It's easier to be zen when your surroundings are zen. It's even easier to then carry that mentality with you while in the middle of a strange distant storm. People who have to live within chaotic atmospheres and still find zen, are golden to me. I treasure people who can speak like you Russell but they are usually poor and have difficult living circumstances. I'm not saying you don't have any stress because if you're breathing, you're probably going through something. However, sadly, most humans are stressed. Although money isn't everything, It's one of the major contributors of stress and anxiety because we know we need it to survive in this materialistic world. This video will help and for that I am grateful. Stay strong poor people! Stay strong the unfortunate! Stay strong those who feel alone, lost and weak! Stay strong those who are in the middle of the storm! If you manage to find happiness, if you manage to smile a real smile. Then you're stronger than you think and I am a fan of you. ✌🏾💪🏾
