I traveled to Cholula, Puebla in Mexico to interview experts on learning languages-even some polyglots, aka people who speak 4+ languages fluently. Amazing, right?
Featured in this video ‪@irishpolyglot‬, ‪@HowtoSpanishOfficial‬, ‪@SpanishWithNate.‬, @antonio.mazin, and ‪@DreamingSpanish‬.
I asked these awesome humans the important questions and their insights are pretty incredible:
- What's the best way to learn a new language?
- How do you get past the point of frustration when you don't feel like you're making progress in learning a language?
- What are your top tips for learning a language?

Maddie, amoungst the foreign languages, Spanish is the easiest to learn, apart from different dialects of English. I have a few tricks and tips, based upon my experiences learning to speak a little of a few different languages. Set the bar at the lowest level. BE PREPARED TO GET LAUGHED AT. People will laugh at you. Trust me, it's happened to me trying to speak French and Polish, as well as trying to pronounce Japanese, Arabic, etc. . Best also to get a thick skin, and do not take being laughed at seriously, or personally. Being ridiculed happens to everyone. Maddie, hint-hint: The background noise, in this video, really makes it awfully hard to hear what you are saying and also your guests' content. I would have asked people to keep it down, if I were there, but then again I am blunt by nature.

The secret is to jump in. I moved to Costa Rica at 50 years old. I moved here alone. That was four years ago. I now am married to a Spanish speaker. One of the things that really helped me the most is that I went to a Spanish school for 16 weeks to learn the basics. You can’t go one or two weeks. Make a huge commitment. After learning the basics it helped me learn from the fact that I live in a Spanish world. Fully immersed. Where I live there are very few English speakers. I go for weeks at a time without speaking English. This creates a immersion learning experience

here is an idea that appeared in my mind: Master 5 situations in your target language: 1-. Going to the store 2-. Going to the restaurant 3-. Asking for directions 4.- Introducing yourself 5-. Going to the Airport If you can learn how to use the language in very specific situations, that gives you motivation and a solid path to follow. Instead of focusing on abstract things like "the language", "words" or grammar in isolation

What a perfect video for me today! I work in the agriculture industry, and many of our employees speak mostly Spanish. I want to be able to communicate better with them and also with family (my husband's who are from Peru) as well as for travel. I took 6 years of French in school and have forgotten most. I took about 3 months of Spanish about 15 years ago but have practiced a little, so I speak much more Spanish than French. Tonight my husband and I just spent an hour and a half talking only in Spanish about my job which will be very helpful if we continue practicing. I'm a little shy and don't like to make mistakes, but I am pushing myself to speak more. I also can better anchor words in my head if I visualize them so I need to add more reading and writing to my practice.

My kids and I moved to Mexico and they were shy about speaking and making mistakes. I'll tell you what I told them. 1. You never look down on people speaking to you in English as their second language when they make mistakes because it is expected, and neitherw will they. 2. People really appreciate your effort.

My Spanish is basic conversational level, but I attained what the U.S. State Department calls "Level 3--Professional competence" in Japanese and actually taught Japanese on the college level. I currently work as a Japanese-English translator I've also studied French, German, Russian, and Chinese, but not having worked on them for a while, I have basic tourist knowledge of those languages. I'm currently taking an upper level course in my ancestral language of Norwegian, reading Nordic Noir mysteries. The key in all of these cases is not to be afraid to speak. I think that one reason Japanese people have so much trouble with English is that they are terrified of making mistakes. When I taught Japanese, my best students were the ones from Malaysia, because they grew up in a multilingual society, and everyone speaks *at minimum* Malay and English, and many learn Chinese or Indian languages, too. They have no fear and just plow right into speaking. I think part of your success in learning Spanish comes from your outgoing personality. You really want to communicate, and it shows.

You didn't interview Pablo Roman from "Dreaming Spanish" did you? One of the guys you spoke to looked like it could be his identical twin but it didn't sound like him at all. Anyway, at "Dreaming Spanish" the emphasis is learning by first listening AND WATCHING SPEAKERS USING PICTURES AND PROPS to help you understand if you are new to the language. Also the recommendation is to listen to speakers/shows etc that are EASY TO UNDERSTAND. This is the way babies learn their native language. Their parents simplify everything for them and SPEAK SLOWLY until they being to understand what is being said and as they learn enough that way they'll need fewer and fewer props and can understand the language being spoken more quickly. It takes a baby two years before they start speaking and when they start speaking, they quickly catch on. He has some great videos for Beginners and Super Beginners as well as for Intermediate and Advanced. He recommends people do enough listening, so they can understand the language well enough to be able to answer and carry on a conversation when they engage a native speaker in a conversation. That way if they ask a question, they will understand what could be one of many different responses because they already understand the language before they try to converse with others. He also says if you do it this way, you can be at a comfortable level of fluency in 2 years or 1500 to 2000 hours ( if I recall correctly) of listening and watching the language being spoken so that you could move to another country and handle almost any situation that could come up. Roman also speaks many languages and found that the ones he learned the fastest were the ones he learned using this method. He paid no attention to grammar or memorization of vocabulary the way they teach the traditional way... and learned these languages in a fraction of the time he learned the others using the more traditional methods.

Great video, and lots of valuable advice. I just returned from Guatemala and spent one week at a Spanish school just to see if I'd like it (I did!). I still deal with Chemo brain and it makes retention and thinking on the fly challenging. Although I am still very much a beginner, it was so meaningful to me see my improvement and know that I can still learn, even if it's slow. I still have to get past feeling self-conscious - the insecurities of feeling foolish speaking a new language and my natural shyness. My sister and brother-in-law were with me and were far more brave than I in striking up conversations, and I could see how that helped them improve. Thanks!

Great video, Maddie. The reality is that for one to become proficient in a second language, immersion (in my opinion) is the most important component. As evidenced by every single person in your video giving advice on the subject. Although, most of us don't have the opportunity to pack up and travel around, and live full-time in Mexico, posting videos of our adventures over a 5 year period :-) I've been freshening up on Spanish, and one practice I implement is for instance going into a large store like Costco, which I did yesterday, I imagined myself asking an employee (in Spanish) where a particular food or item is located. Another thing I did was to intentionally look for and listen for anyone speaking Spanish. I discovered a whole family around in the meat/fish section looking at salmon. I heard them speaking in Spanish and graciously involved myself in the conversation. It was great! They were very gracious and receptive and dialoged with me in Spanish. I used the opportunity to practice some words that I had been working on, one being the word, costarricenes. Thanks again!

I love this video and I agree with all this advice . I guess I can call myself a polyglot since I do speak 5 languages: 2 at advanced level, 1 at intermediate and 2 at beginners level. English is my third language and just like all the 4 other languages I am constantly learning. I know that once I start learning a language it’s for life. I had to experiment with different methods of learning and I don’t just limit myself to doing one thing but I vary my learning: reading, writing , movies , music, conversing with locals, online platforms, books, grammar exercises… I do loose motivation sometimes and my job demands a lot of my time and energy but if I did not have to work I would be learning languages all day ☺️Languages are the key to connecting with people and cultures 😊Great video Maddie! Loved it ❤ PS my last sentence of connecting with people and cultures was written before you actually expressed those exact words at the end of the video 😊

My favorite part of this video was when you said you struggled with learning by listening and that you "see" things in your mind. That is my huge stumbling block! I have a learning disability when it comes to auditory learning and I feel like I might never learn Spanish. With listening, I'm at about B1, but speaking is about A2/B1, and I've been learning for 2 1/2 years!! I become very frustrated. I'd really like to hear more from you about your struggles with auditory learning. Not sure how we can connect.

Maddie you are looking so beautiful healthy and happy and I so hope this is a reflection of happiness and delight in your life. I'm here in CDMX and I KNOW the reason that I'm not advancing quickly is I've been having too much fun with my beloved Engish speaking friends and family. Now I'll knuckle down - maybe learn a song! Love ❤️ Jennie

Benny saved me! I thought I could not learn. But - I cannot learn in a traditional class with a traditional text book. I could never hear the separation of words in Spanish or other languages. Listening to music, I can hear distinct words much more. I need that. Also I think I learned basic German by living there even though I was not totally immersed. I think I will refresh on German and learn more. And tackle Spanish. The end goal is German, Japanese, Spanish and Lakota. After that, I may never speak English again. LOL I am also visual, but just a text book won't help.

I keep hearing this best advice is that I just need to start speaking it and let go of my ego and making mistakes...but damn, that really is the hardest part. I'm also an aquarius so I live my life based on knowledge & holding myself to a really high standard of being a "know it all" whenever I speak on something..so learning Spanish has been a huge challenge for me & has led to some tears a few times. I don't want to open my mouth & be wrong because being "wrong" in this sense is the ultimate embarrassment. Unfortunately language is different than other studies because you do NEED to immerse yourself & speak it. For 2023 I hope to blossom in this way & gain a ton of momentum in Spanish.

Sounds like we’re two very like-minded people! I agree with all this 🤓 Good luck diving in and letting go of the ego/pressure for perfection. It’ll help a LOT I promise.
