In November 2021, Dr. Peterson traveled to the United Kingdom to give a series of lectures at Oxford and Cambridge. This lecture was given at Lady Mitchell Hall at the University of Cambridge on November 23rd, 2021.
Dr. Peterson gives an in-depth exploration of the problem of perception. In doing so, he touches on orienting reflexes, artificial intelligence, the infinite possibilities parsed by perception, neurophysiology, postmodernism, and the relationship between imitation, awe, and the divine, before answering questions from the audience about the direction of Western civilization, meaning, and the notion of humans as simple biological machines.

Life doesn’t have meaning unless you make it have. Your “real” meaning for life is your opinion and has no basis for anyone else. Life is full of struggling and that’s the point Dr. Peterson makes - just because there are struggles in life does not mean life is insignificant and should perish. Likewise, we don’t stand up and walk away from listening to a beautiful piece of music just because we know it will end. That’s not how we should live life.

Ultimately life has no inherent meaning, we live, we die, that's it. But you can make an impact and give more to the world than you take. Be kind to the people around you, care about others, find what makes you happy and motivates you. It's entirely up to the person to find what the meaning of life is and it's different for everyone. In the end we live, we suffer, we rejoice, we feel sorrow and sadness but that's life and I'd prefer to be here experiencing it than not at all. The closest thing to a miracle is that we're all here and alive in this time. What are the chances that you would be born our of billions of sperm cells? The fact that we were born and we're conscious is meaning enough to at least try to live life imo.

"In music, you find this demand that the music lays upon you to orient yourself in relationship to this harmonious interplay of patterns." As a musician/music lover, this absolutely describes what it's like to really "get into" a piece of music you're playing or listening to, kind of our "flow state" or being "in the zone" as it were. It's an otherworldly feeling, almost out-of-body but not really, kind of like your mind and the music lock in as one and your body is just sort of along for the ride and does what it feels led to do. I think you've gotten a taste of this feeling before, Dr. Peterson, perhaps from that time (and maybe others) when you felt so incredibly and inexplicably overwhelmed with emotion by a symphony you were listening to. Imagine being in and out of that state for an hour or more if you're a performing musician who *really* gets into the music and performance.

Dr. Peterson went through 2 horrific years, maybe more, of Benzodiazepine addiction & withdrawal..... he gives hope to so many and any of you dealing with addiction to anything, should go watch Dr. Peterson's daughters page & follow her interviews about this. Its life changing..... God Bless anyone who reads this & I hope you, and I, find the fulfillment we are searching for & life brings us happiness & blessings.

"We were keeping our eye on 1984. When the year came and the prophecy didn't, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. The roots of liberal democracy had held. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares. "But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell's dark vision, there was another - slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. But in Huxley's vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think. "What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions." In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us. "This book is about the possibility that Huxley, not Orwell, was right." From "Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business" by Neil Postman. I despair for those who refuse to seek enlightenment and experience. We exist, let's make the most of it and be the best version of ourselves we can become.

Dr Peterson, I have pondered all my substantially long life for the answers you have provided about how to live to my life, Some of the answers I had found on my own and they were reinforced by your teaching and I have gained insight from listening to your lectures. But now I'm pretty old. I'll be 69 soon. Every day is more important and I find myself panicking at the thought of not being able to be productive. I've struggled to make gains in my life and there are still things I need to accomplish. Now sometimes when you start thinking about a dilemma you get a flood of help from the Universe. I was thinking about posting a comment to one of your videos and I found this one, how appropriate. I wish you would talk more to people who are ready to accept you advice and find a way to put it into action. Thanks

All he's really saying in overly complicated way is that meaning is the reason why we do things based on the way we perceive and think about reality. But the problem with that definition is that it doesn't give the individual true objective meaning in their life. The kind of meaning described by Peterson is only limited to the subjectivity of how each individual thinks and perceives, which is not true meaning at all.

@@Doctor.T.46 hello!!! nice to meet you dr T!! by darkness i mean the inner struggles that Dr Peterson deals with. Struggles with depression/mental health issues, and really all the inner darkness that comes with that issue and also the physical issues he's had to deal with, as well as the struggles we all deal with, just living life itself is often a battle between the light and the darkness that threatens to overwhelm us, if not then one is lucky, and usually only through ignorance no? If one takes much time to wrestle with deep issues, and searches the depths of themselves, then they are certain to be threatened by much darkness whether they're willing to face it and try to wrestle with it or not. I think we can agree that Dr Peterson, whatever else is thought of him, is known to be one who is willing to wrestle with that darkness, though it seems to clearly take it's toll at times. I only wanted to help add more light to that journey! make the fight a bit easier for him if at all possible, as i'd like to do for you, and everyone, if it were in my power at all. thanks for giving me the chance to clarify!!! i hope you're doing well!!!

📌Friends, I hope this helps someone who needs to hear it💜 According to many Near-Death Experiences, we come here to learn about love experientially and to apply what we learn. A soul cannot do that in the ethereal realm because everything is perfect there. To understand the light (love), one must experience darkness; one cannot truly know what a thing is until it has been contrasted with its opposite. I believe we choose to come here, and sometimes not just to learn, but to help others (to teach). Heaven is home, but once we've enjoyed basking for eons in perfect heavenly bliss, we might look forward to a new challenge/adventure in this amazing universe. I think the soul takes on these 'lives' just as we opt to read books or watch movies - sometimes a comedy, other times a drama or thriller etc., - but all for the sole purpose of learning to love. So please don't fear the process; God knows what He's doing. Don't be a backseat driver! ☺️ However, I do believe that it's *imperative* that we learn to love (mercy, compassion, forgiveness, kindness, fortitude, equanimity, etc.), otherwise, experiences and even lives may repeat until we do so! Understandably, God always gives precedence to the soul over the body. Once we've overcome all our challenges, I doubt we'll come here too often, if at all. I believe that an important thing to remember is the 'golden thread' that seems to run through most NDEs; namely, we are a part of God (His children), we're eternal, we're loved beyond measure, and we come here to learn to love. Thank goodness it's designed in such a way as to always feel like the first time! Strive to be the best version of yourself in thought, word, and deed, and you may be surprised by the abundance of blessings that come your way. Give it a try and see for yourself! I wish you the very best in life! 💜 "To find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better... To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

I’ve always thought that while it would be extremely valuable and useful to see and understand the world the way Mr. Peterson does, it almost has to sometimes work against him mentally. Maybe I’m wrong.

JP's brilliance can only do so much for someone in my situation. I am unemployed, divorced, unemployed(but I do have a rather significant savings). I am on Fluoxetine and am devoutly religious though. And I am a recovering opioid addict who at age 42 lives with his parents still! But I am rather acutely aware of how thinking positively can actually change the situation one finds oneself in! My diagnosis is/are depression, opiate addiction in sustained remission, PTSD AND anxiety, which I control through exercise! And I have have been undergoing a rather rapid detox from Suboxone. I do NOT reccomend it! And if you have a good job, do Not quit unless you have something lined up already.

It's videos and lectures like this that inspire introspective thought. I really hope that we all find the meaning and will to carry on and thrive.

I sometimes find Dr Peterson's intellect scary and then he says "I don't know" it's then I realise just how self aware and humble he is, there may still be hope for us with people like him around.

I guess my question is, what if you as a person don't find joy in the mundane things you do in life anymore. What if life to you is just a means to go to sleep and get rest and be away from menial task constantly? What if things such as music or interaction is losing it's glimmer and you are just stuck their expected to do things in spite your referance frame don't matter to you ultimatly.
