In pixel art this is called dithering It's really useful because it allows for extra shades without adding more colors (in pixel art you usually work with a limited pallette)
@ZanderSabbag11 ай бұрын
I am colorblind and I have been so much in favor of doing this in conjunction with color. I may not know where red or green is, but I can damn right tell where spotted red is vs the checkered green! That’s such a rare QoL thing for people to do tho, which I understand, we are a minority, the default is not taking us into account.

there used to be specific guidelines on how materials should be painted in heraldic art I bet there’s a norm for manga as well
@mischief590511 ай бұрын

@srjskam11 ай бұрын
@@ThePandaAgenda In black and white heraldic art Argent/silver/white is white, Or/gold/yellow is dots, Gules/red is vertical lines, Azure/blue is horizontal lines, Vert/green is left diagonal (\), Purpure/purple is right diagonal (/), Sable/black is horizontal+vertical or just black. These varied a lot in the past, but the modern convention is this. It would be possible to add a feature to comic readers that would hatch colors according to this or some other scheme... There are already apps that let you do it live with a phone camera, but that would probably be a bit cumbersome way to read a comic.

You can actually use the same logic without halftones. It's a matter of contrast in patterns. So if you have a design with any horizontal lines contrasted against vertical lines, you'll get shapes out of that. Just felt like mentioning this because a lot of beginners take advice at a surface level sometimes. "Halftones is the answer", while in actuallity it was the contrast of patterns.

Back in the 90's Akira Toriyama wrote a manga to teach the basics of Manga to children. It was of course filled with jokes about boobs and how he himself is a loser. In French it was titled L'apprenti Mangaka = the mangaka apprentice, and there is a chapter about trame (the tiny pattern to give dimension and contrast), I remember he explains exactly the same thing is you just did and he also shows how to enhance a powerful movement thanks to the patterns and how to scratch it with an exact blade. The whole book is very interesting, there is a chapter about pen nibs.
