hello Justin , i am interested in exactly which N52 engine it have , and which oil are you using ? me and BMW recommend you to use CASTROL EDGE oil , 5w30 , 0w30 , for M power engines 10w60 , if you already using 5w30 DO NOT CHANGE IT because it will increase oil consumption

I'm an infiniti owner (queue the boos) I really like your channel, this is the exact reason why i don't do to third party places for servicing my car. I got burned with tires, i was sold the correct size, but they were wrong in the performace on the car. Long story short, the handling in the car sucked due to the trend in the wrong direction (i didn't know they were directional) my dealer couldn't find anything wrong, once i rotated them my car feels so much better. the place where i got these tires didn't even take responsibility for the mistake.

I know that this is an old video but this is the strangest coincidence. I was googling other symptoms (whining noise when cranking followed by zero oil pressure) for a different BMW (E46, N42B18). But I watched this anyway, when you got to the crushed filter I almost dropped the phone. Now waaaaait a minute, I just pulled a filter like that off my engine and the issue whit pressure drop disappeared after the oil change. I would never have putt that together without seeing this! Thank you for posting!

Another helpful video. I had the same problem. It started right after I replaced my valve cover gasket. So strange. It was a Mann filter too. I took my Vanos solenoids out at the same time. It must be something with the oil pressure that causes it. Easy fix. Just change your oil.

Yep, the moment I heard that whining noise, that was my first thought - either from a poor quality filter that has collapsed, or if the dealer tech doesn't fit it correctly by clicking the filter into the filter housing cap and just twist tightens it as is, that then tends to twist and distort/collapse the newly fitted filter and cause this problem very soon or almost immediately. Nothing wrong with MANN filters of course, but when in doubt, just use the BMW OEM filter - these engines are critical when it comes to oil and the construction/quality of the filter, so don't skimp on either.

years late to the game... but... ive had this problem in my 07 328xi a few times and its actually the extra half of a centimeter ring on top of the one filter. It makes it slightly too tall and forces the filter to be crushed slightly. It can cause more problems then just a bad noise as well, engine over heating/smoking, idling erratically, and even shutting down. Please be aware of this and pay attention to these filters for anyone that may come across this still! great video for people to be aware of justin

I had a variation of this issue, where oil started to leak from the Oil filter cover lid, no matter how hard is tightened. Turned out I purchased the filter from local Auto parts store where it had a protruding lip and didn't seat properly. Changed with the OEM one and problem solved. So don't take any chances and just stick with the OEM part.

Just to add my expenses with the filter twist , one problem if you don't give a slight press to the filter you actually have to push the filter on to the oil filter cap and it will make a slight snaping sound that tells you that the filter is in its final possession so then you can go ahead and install . If the filter didn't snap in to place then the twisting will happen. Thats all and I'm still using the aftermarket filters and there fine now .

Mines had a similar problem, it had a $85 air filter. I put a $20 autozone air filter in and haven’t had any problems since. the expensive ones allow little particles to go through specially if you’ve cleaned it off before or, it’ll gives it too much air, causing the noise.

I find this hard to believe. However, I never witnessed the sound anyway on my 325i, although the filter was squeezed which a is weird thing. The brand was Purflux iirc. The new filter I installed with the oil change was from Bosch and looks exactly the same as the Mann filter. Take care of using a torque wrench and correct torque setting on the oil filter housing, overtightening it might cause the filter to be squeezed.

@Flatus Antiquitous he's talking about engine damage. Idling in bumper to bumper traffic is when most wear happens when it's warmed up. Oil pressure is lowest at low rpm. And there's not much air blowing through the radiator if the car has a oil cooler or air flowing over the oil pan.

Justin, YOU ARE da MAN my friend - I watch ALL your videos & and always 👍, and of course I'm 'scribed. On April 29th this past spring I was scheduled to move into a new apt across town May 1st, but we had a bad storm that night and a huge 2 story tree on the lot next door fell on my car and crushed it beyond repair. Long story short, even though I'd never even driven one I ended up doing something I never in my wildest dreams thought I would do, I purchased a 2005 BMW 325i with 230,000 miles on it from a small local 20 - 30 car used car lot. I was skeptical at first, but the owner of Carl'sAuto.Inc reassured me " Yes it's got alot of miles on it, but don't make up your mind till you take a good test drive." Well right away I knew I was in something special as it took off so incredibly smooth, shifting almost imperceptibly, almost silent even with the moonroof open, not a shimmy or vibration anywhere, especially from the steering wheel, like it felt like the car wasn't even turned on. I thought to myself, "Well now I know what all the fuss is about, this car ( excuse me, "Driving Machine"), an incomperable feeling I had never experienced even in the 3 Lincoln Town cars & 67 Cadillac that I've owned. They are all wonderful cars in their own respects, but this high mileage, 15 yr old Beamer is hands down the "Ultimate Driving Experience". Now I know first hand what that means. The point of this comment though is an enormous SHOUT OUT!!! and THANKS to you, Justin, and Mark from Exotic Car Play Place and ALL the other people involved in their dedication to enabling us to enjoy this experience as well, as I've learned myself the best way to afford this luxury is to learn how to maintain, repair, and modify these vehicles yourself. Who knows with the onslaught of self - driving and electric vehicles how much longer we all will be able to enjoy this luxury, but thanks to your dedication and efforts at least for the time being, we'll be able to get right "in the middle of it" before now becomes, as Carly Simon once famously wrote "These are the good old days ...!" Thank you all for the wonderful future memories you're enabling us to create now. Time and efforts well spent & appreciated ! Al Kane

Okay boys I actually have had the same on going problem for a little while with my 335i as well! I also had the wrong filter in it, I had the same sound and symptoms etc. I pin pointed the sound coming from the same spot. So I ran down the the old bmw dealership got new oil and a bmw brand oil filter. I noticed that the sleave where the filter slides on to was disconnected from the filter cap, it was easy enough to pop back on, slid the filter in and finish the oil change. After about another month of driving, sound came back. took the filter out to find it was also crushed like the old one, and again the sleave was disconnected from the cap. So I replaced the cap with a brand new bmw brand one, put a new filter in oil change etc. and the same problem has come back once again. I believe there is a larger problem here, any bmw techs out there with some insight.

also, what oil do you guys run. my n55 blow up last year. Spent the better part of six months putting it back together, cut the crank and got 2.5thou over sized triple plated racing grade bearings for the bottom end. After that I started running 5w40 instead of the 0w30. Im now wondering if that could cause the filter to crush.

My 2006 BMW 325i makes a similar noise around the same RPMS. I booked a appointment with the mechanics but I might try this instead. Mine is more of a ticking sound like something is loose so idk.

The sound is not your oil filter. It is your oil pump. The filter added more restriction that elevated the issue. I can still hear the same sound in your after video just at a lighter level.

the crazy thing about e90 oil filters is the OEM filter is by far the best over these supposedly made for bmw filters. sometimes non oem filters will even throw a code.
