We recently rescued a neighborhood cat who basically adopted us. 😊I took him to the vet to get checked out and gound he tested positive for FIV. He has pink eye often but don't really see any other symptoms. He has some supplements I put in his food and I give him eye drops whenever he has flare ups. Our other cat is FIV negative and has been with us since he was a tiny kitten. They don't really get close enough to fight because they've both pretty good about guarding their "personal space". So, we try to keep it quiet around our house so everyone gets along. Domino is a super friendly lovey-dovey cat. We're fairly he was someone's cat at some point because he's litter trained loves being around people.

Two days ago my girl was confirmed FIV+ so im trying to find out all the info i need. I have a friend who lost a cat at 5yo to FIP. My girl is very healthy and happy but she lived 10 years as a stray who got spayed much later in life. Im hoping to change habits for her and figure out keys to have her live many more years to come ❤ thank you for making this video ❤

I have a fiv boy. He’s 17 now. There are no special requirements. He and I have another cat who is negative and a puppy. If you walk your cat please know that there are infections from other cats left on the grass, earth etc. Bud had a respiratory infection three years ago he hasn’t been able to fully recover from. His breathing is shallow. He gets a monthly shot for arthritis. That shot is because he’s old. Otherwise it really does determine the cat and care. I had a healthy cat who died of kidney failure a year old.

@@Rosie-mq6othi Rose! Mine died at the age of 15 years. I have no idea when he got aids because his last results were good. 3 days ago he felt very ill and I went with him to the vet and his bloodwork came back positive for aids and fatty liver. He didn’t want to eat or drink anymore so the vet recommended me to euthanize him. I agreed because he was in a lot of pain and a lot of discomfort. I miss him very much! I hope your cat will live many more beautiful years.

my cat was misdiagnosed as having stomatitis, he has a bad case of periodontal disease. every 6 months he has to get his blood tested. he also cant digest a lot of food, so we have give him chicken. they first found him with a big gash mark on his left side of his face/ear. he is a gr8 cat. He acts like a dog, I swear he wags his tail when he happy and very vocal/active. the vet said he needs to loose like 5 pounds. he is 14 pounds, he always been heavy.

I just found out my two year old male cat has fiv. I took him to the vet due to having an awful smell. He had stomatitis. His mouth was inflamed and had sores. He is now on a soft food diet instead of dry food.

(Even the vet says there’s no hope anymore) but im not giving up on her😭💪🏻 so thankyou so much for the inspiring video, i hope she can survive too😭🙏🏻❤️

Thank you! I am currently doing a lot of research as a precaution. I am going to adopt two kittens in a few days, and yesterday the shelter called that unfortunately the mom of one of those kittens was infected with FIV (and one kitten from the litter as well). In a few days all the kittens from that litter will be tested. Now I've heard you can only be certain whether a cat has FIV after 6 months, so I am planning on taking in the kitten regardless whether she will test positive for FIV or not. I want her to live a healthy and long life, but I'm also a little scared of the costs if it turns out she has FIV. The other kitten is luckily negative and did not belong to that litter, however the shelter doesn't want to seperate them since they get along so well. I hope my kitten is going to be negative, and if not I want to be prepared and give her all the care she needs.

I've discovered that the cat we've just adopted is an FIV-positive. We're freaking out and don't quite know what to do, considering we have 5 other cats in our household (he's been on a strict quarantine ever since the adoption). The data on the web regarding the risk of transmission is quite conflicting. It seems previously it was strictly recommended to not put FIV+ and FIV- cats together, but currently the perception might be shifting, as FIV is only transferred during serious fighting (in neutered cats). It would be ideal to find a new family for this cat, but what makes things worse is that he is deeply afraid of humans (must have had plenty of traumatic experiences), while being social with other cats in the wild. Which means 1) it'd be hard to find another family for him, as he might never open up for all we know and 2) he probably won't be happy in a household without other cats. He's not much of a fighter, and in the wild I never observed him attack the other cats, although he did get into "verbal arguments" with other males, and was attacked by some. It appears to me that the risk of transmission is not high, but only if the integration process is *perfect*, which is a pretty high bar. I don't know what to do.

Im in the same boat. 2 indoor and we saved a stray cat who came up positive for FIV. Wth do we do now? He is too cute to surrender to shelter and i dont want him euthenized.

The risk is low but not impossible. They can share water and food bowls. Its not uncommon for foster homes and rescue homes to house fiv and non fiv cats together. Importantly, fiv cats should be spayed and neutered to prevent fighting and breeding that spreads the disease. Its similar to how HIV people can mingle with the rest of the population and not spread it to everyone they meet. Get a vets opinion, but I love my FIV+ boy. He would've died on the streets if I didn't adopt him.
@Septagramable3 ай бұрын
@@fdhncxfhjvdetuikkbdwwd All of our cats are spayed, him included. Also he's the kind of cat that can build very healthy cat-cat relationships and already plays with our other cats, but at the same time terribly afraid of humans, which is, after 2 months, still a big problem. Working on it, my impression is it will take a lot of time for a traumatized cat to trust again.
@fdhncxfhjvdetuikkbdwwd3 ай бұрын
My FIV boy has periods of pickyness and vomiting likely related to dental pain. I'm not a vet, this just worked for ME, but he would eat no more than a tablespoon of unsalted butter 2 or 3 times a day while this happened. It was the only thing he was interested in (offered meat, wet food, dry food, dry food + milk or water, etc) and it kept calories in him. This would pull him through flare ups and periods of inflammation he may have been facing. Ofc a vets opinion is best, but when you're running out of options sometimes you gotta work with what you have!

Was the main reason single cat households with FIV lived longer than multi cat households with FIV because of the more frequent checkups?
@chrisbutler512925 күн бұрын
Wouldn’t transmission from one cat to another be horizontal transmission? Vertical transmission would be from mother to child or father to child.

We recently discovered our older boy if FIV infected. And we also have a younger cat who is not positive. Older cat actually take care of younger and we completely lost wether we need to separate them both. FIV positive cat is not aggressive at all but sometimes he play with the younger and worried should i stop it. But feels bad they are fir each other loves their play time. They use to share same food bowl and litter everything. I’m worried separating them might cause more damage.

hi my fiv + cats love freeze dried raw and air dried raw food which i have currently stop feeding them. do u have any treats out there that are safe for FIV cats. which brand name of kibbles and treats that is ok ? and is it true that they cant consume any raw food including freeze or air dried food?
@MayYean10 ай бұрын
Hey there :) so the thing is with FIV cats we just need to be careful with their immune system more than a normal cat, and feeding raw has the risks of potential bacterial infection which can make cats poorly. I fed Keith a mixture of Purina dry food and Felix wet food and he loves the combination, with some dreamies or lick e lix very occasionally as treats, hope this helps!

Our 10 y/o cat started vomiting his food intermittently about 7 months ago. It progressed to him vomiting pretty much every time he ate. After some blood work our vet just told us he was FIV positive. He has lost about 3 and 1/2 lb, and I feel terrible because every time he eats he vomits. I've tried sensitive stomach cat food, and even making cat food mixed with milk so it is a slurry. He seems a bit distressed most of the time, and he sleeps a lot more than he used to. I hate seeing him suffer, but there are times he is happy and purrs when being petted. My question is, when should I consider euthanasia?
@MayYean11 ай бұрын
Hey I’m really sorry to hear this, it’s not nice that he keeps vomiting and I can’t advice you without seeing him personally, but when it comes to euthanasia sometimes I provide this questionnaire to help pet parents have a measure of quality of life, and ultimately we don’t want our pets to be suffering vetsocialwork.utk.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/Quality-of-Life.pdf please contact your local vet to have this discussion in case to rule out other causes of vomiting and to make a plan for him 🥺 hope you take care 🙏
@humunguswarrior10 ай бұрын
@@MayYean I apologize for the delay, but I want to say thank you for your response and information. And especially the compassion with which you approach this subject. Our cat is so far doing pretty much the same. He eats a little bit, he vomits a little bit, all in all his weight loss is not progressing so that is a good thing. I know the time is coming when we'll have to put him down, but generally he is a happy cat right now, and definitely living his best life with all the love and attention he gets. Thank you again!

Mine had been vomiting frequently and I noticed he was throwing up unchewed food. I assume it was a dental flare up that maybe made it painful to chew which then upset his tummy from whole bits of wet food. I blended his wet food and added a little oil, like olive oil, to try and pack as much calories into his body. He gets picky, but one thing he loves is butter. I understand it may not be the healthiest for cats to eat straight up fat but its what I had on hand to keep some calories in him. I would give no more than a tablespoon of unsalted butter to him at a time. Best of luck god bless you and your cats
