As an example of how conditioning begins from day one, I think. (What he goes through here is not dissimilar to the 18-hour days and relentless hassling endured at boot camp.) He looks nice and innocent now, but five years on he'll be as authoritarian and hidebound as any of those "whips".

If you want a bit of an idea of what these boys went through, read "Stand Before Your God" by author Paul Watkins. It chronicles his days and nights in the Dragon School and in Eton. An excellent read, and very reminiscent of this movie.
