this guy is so nice compared to any oral examiner I've dealt with. My examiners always kept digging and trying to get me on every little thing. I found out quick that if they ask a yes/no question, for the love of God, just answer yes or no - don't volunteer more info than they're asking.
@kingston5469

The one I had would do the opposite. He left me open questions and let me brief over everything I knew, then if I was lacking, he asked me specific questions. It was quite nice because it made it go by quickly if I covered everything he was looking for.

Gary is a character but very knowledgeable when it comes to ifr and glass. He’s very soft spoken in his online presentations but much more vibrant in his in person presentations. Not crazy for his personality as he’s a bit full of himself but I don’t hold that against him. He’s not a bad guy and I won’t stop my opinion on his personality interfere with gaining the knowledge he has. He does care about helping make better pilots.

12:45 I didn't know the definitions for From (FM) and Becoming (BECMG) on a TAF so I looked it up if anyone else is interested. AIM 7-1-31 states the following: The FM group is used when a rapid change, usually occurring in less than one hour, in prevailing conditions is expected. The BECMG group is used when a gradual change in conditions is expected over a longer time period, usually two hours.

Awesome video! One thing that wasn’t mentioned is that you can can also do your 6 month instrument currency entirely in an AATD without an instructor present. 61.57 (C) 2. No excuse to ever be out of currency. Procedurally, you can shoot many more approaches in an AATD than you can do in an airplane in the same amount of time and you don’t need foggles. You can also perform 99% of an IPC in an AATD. The only thing you need to get in the airplane for is the Circle to land. 61.57 (d) 2 ii.

Thanks! Due to this "pandemia" 🙄 I'm almost running out of my instrument currency! I've been practicing approaches on my sim at home with Xplane 11 (even though simulators are pretty terrible at replicating the "real feel" of an aircraft, they were made for exactly this!). Now, I just need to find a school that will allow me to rent their AATD by myself, to log the approaches!!

Your student mentioned adding flap increases AoA. While his explanation was close thinking about chord line change, when you add so much lift it actually decreases AoA for the same relative airflow. Best example would be fly straight and level maintaining the same airspeed and put flaps down, notice what happens to the attitude to maintain that altitude and airspeed. Sorry I couldn't let it go.....you`re both doing aviation proud gents, keep it up!
@ohwowbeau
@ohwowbeau 3 жыл бұрын
What you described is a decrease in pitch, not AoA. AoA increases with flaps, which means you need to pitch down to maintain straight and level flight.
@Nico-uk3dv
@Nico-uk3dv 3 жыл бұрын
@@ohwowbeau my point was you'll find the net effect from an increase in camber and lift will be flight at a lower AoA for the same relative airflow. Without an AoA guage this is only noticed by the need to pitch the aircraft forward and rotate the new chord line towards the relative airflow to a net lower AoA. If nothing else is considered then AoA does increase when selecting flaps theoretically but not practically.

2 Questions about the Wind shear: 1) Can you ask for or find data yourself in flight about the stability of the wind shear? Could it be trending higher, lower or stable at 010? A 35 knot shear trending down with the last report at 1000’ sounds pretty sketchy. 2) Can you prophylactically increase your airspeed before you encounter the shear during decent? Knowing you will losses 35ish knot of airspeed? Or does that just further complicate shooting that approach?

I’ve been reading some comments that the student in this video is acting and is actually very knowledgeable. I feel the video would be better if you didn’t deliberately have the student get the answers wrong. The listeners hear the wrong answer first, then the right answer from the instructor. I think it would be better if we heard the right answer or a partial right answer and then the instructor added the extra information to really complete the answer. The advantage is that the student doesn’t get a bunch of KZbin backlash. But another advantage is that you will feel really prepared after watching this video!

....... The aircraft descends past the final approach fix (FAF) as the pilot contacts the control tower and the aircraft transitions from IMC to visual metrological conditions (VMC) before reaching the DA. At this point, the pilot receives an ATC clearance to land; the pilot visually confirms runway environment assured and lands. In this example, the IAP complies with § 61.51(g)(3) and § 61.57(c); therefore, the pilot may log this IAP....... (example in INFO 15012)

I just wondering how you can have 6 holding in the past 6 months... Doing 6 approaches, tracking, interception is not an issue, but holding? Do you tell the tower, I need to do a holding as part of my certs?

Is a oral exam still required for private pilot or tail wheel bush pilot check ride
@djnokes1818
@djnokes1818 3 жыл бұрын
Oral and flight exam is required for private pilot. Tailwheel is an endorsement, meaning it doesnt require an official 'checkride'. A certified flight instructor will 'sign you off'. Dont be mistaken though; there is still practice and learning involved in this endorsement. In terms of Bush flying, it's even less official. I'd recommend reaching out to a qualified instructor with backcountry experience to begin that journey. Bush flying requires a lot of different experience and judgement; learn everything you can

How much do you need to have memorized v. The stuff you can just use the far-aim and look up during the instrument check ride???
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199
@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 5 ай бұрын
You should know as much information as possible for any check-ride. The FAR is there as a reference, if you are constantly having to check the regulations for answers your DPE wont like that very much.

@@fly8ma.comflighttraining199 understood but is there a quantifiable/average amount of information that is acceptable for the oral? Like say i knew 50% of the questions asked off the top of my head and the other 50% I relied on the FAR/AIM would that be a passable situation?

Assuming you are a private pilot with an instrument rating: You need to complete a biennial flight review and an instrument Proficiency check.

Couple of little details. After the 6 months have expired on Instrument Currency, there is no longer a 6 month grace period where you can fly with a safety pilot to get your approaches in. That went away with the new 2020 FAR/AIM. Also in order to log a IAP, all you need to do is cross the FAF in IMC to log it. You do not need to take it all the way to minimums. However, you still need to fly the full approach to the MDA/DA even if you break out into VMC a half mile past the FAF.

Really? I took my instrument checkride in March and I gave that same answer and the DPE didnt say anything
@ohwowbeau
@ohwowbeau 3 жыл бұрын
@@BelowMinimums My bad, the change was the fact that you can use a flight sim to maintain currency without an instructor present. So if you let the 6 months expire you can still perform the approaches in a flight sim by yourself as long as you log it properly. The wording of 61.57 says: "Except as provided in paragraph (e) of this section, a person who has failed to meet the instrument experience requirements of paragraph (c) of this section for more than six calendar months may reestablish instrument currency only by completing an instrument proficiency check." Which would lead you to believe after the 6 months you HAVE to do an IPC. But apparently that's not the case because in the FSIMS vol. 5 it says: "Failure to Meet Instrument Currency. A pilot not meeting the instrument recency of experience requirement may not exercise the privileges of the instrument rating until the requirements are met. If the pilot fails to meet this recency of instrument experience for a period of 1 year, the pilot must pass an instrument proficiency check in the category of aircraft involved." Although that hasn't been updated since 2012, it is still the current publication so I believe it. Sorry for misleading it was late and I was confused.

@@ohwowbeau resurrecting this old thread: just to clarify, I think you're getting hung up on what FAILURE means. If you read that quote again from 61.57 what it says is "a person who has FAILED to meet the instrument requirements of paragraph (c) of this section FOR MORE THAN SIX calendar months..." CAPS emphasis mine. Remember, the pilot is still current during the first six months. during those first six months, you haven't failed anything. the "failing" to meet the requirements starts once the first six months passes and you haven't done 6HIT. at that point you are no longer IFR legal. so you need a safety pilot, or SIM to do them and that's allowed in the 6 month grace period. If you then fail to get 6HIT during the six months grace. then an IPC is required.

I’m a bit surprised this guy is a CFII… seemed like he was pretty shaky about a lot of the material. Very different than any instructor I’ve dealt with. Also, is a checkride ever this easy? He gave him most of the answers he didn’t know. I feel like I would have been failed in the first 10 minutes of this had I been giving these answers.
