You failed to mention you can adjust the EV Exposure Compensation and has an external mic input that's a nice feature. Personally I think the menu system is far easier to use plus it's easier to read for spectacle wearers like myself . IMO this is a far superior action cam than the GoPro 4 Black. Good review though.

Excellent review, and your review is spot-on correct. I have both the GoPro Hero 4 Black and the Sony X1000V and the video menu for the Sony ON the camera is an absolute mess, but use the app, and its super-quick. So, that was a wash for me, not a "camera-killer" to choose one camera over the other. A HUGE down-side over the Sony for me is the limited ability in the X1000V to change the Sensor size in use (Narrow vs Wide view etc.). The Medium and Narrow views cuts down on the editing steps if I want to reduce fish-eye effects, etc. Video quality for each was another matter altogether however. Color saturation is in the eye of the beholder...and Sony's color profile for their Actioncam is definitely that -- VIVID! Luckily, I happen to like super-saturated (over-saturated) video images. Others may like the softer views, and that's absolutely understandable. I like a sharper, cleaner image, but that's just me. But sharpness between the two cameras was (IS) a noticeable difference that I had not noticed before using the Sony. I recently was one of the many that did a side-by-side video comparison on my site between the two cameras because I noticed that my GoPro footage seemed noticeably softer than that of the Sony, even in bright sunlight...too soft for me once I started using the Sony. That's likely the Bitrate GoPro films at compared to the Sony. Even after color-correcting and sharpening the GoPro videos I took in daVinci Resolve, I still couldn't get my GoPro videos as clean or as sharp as the X1000V. For that reason alone, I've been using my Sony over my GoPro, and with two cheap adapters, all my GoPro accessories can be used with the Sony. For that reason, I used the Sony exclusively for my summer vacation in Colorado and the results I've been impressed with, even after KZbin does its compression thing! kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZTGkGyPiNGBqMU Ifti, I chose the Sony over the GoPro, but you are still 100% in your assessment. How does the external power plug in at the bottom of the cam work ? I thought it is only an external mic input?? I would like to use the external power plug in to extend filming time by connecting it to my motorbikes battery (now with battery only approx 1hr), or is it possible to load battery by usb when filming? Now it goes into sleep mode when connecting usb (also with the setting USBpw OFF)

+Sidowse i own both and the Gopro is the better camera, if you look at what hollywood and film makers use as there goto action camera and they can use anything they use gopro.. and its not marketing its professionals use what works best.

The Sony has awesome image stabilisation. Blows any other camera out of the water. At times it seems the camera is on a gimbal! (Check the in-car scenes in this video). If only the menu system on the Sony was better it would be all round fantastic camera!

GoPro also beats Sony on accessories (like mounts and extended life batteries) and stronger waterproofing, and all round leds. Also GoPro has better slogan "be a hero" :-)
