I originally planned to get a gimbal for my S7 to record our coming trip in March but then a friend told me that he did the same setup but the problem is, you would looked really dorky holding a gimbal while walking around and that even with only a 600g(gimbal + phone) setup, it could get heavy and tiresome after 30mins or so of holding it. He also mentioned that depending on how much you want to record on your trip, your phone's battery would always be in critical levels even with a powerbank. He then recommended me this X3000 that even though I won't get the gimbal smoothness, it will be smooth enough, video it takes is very good and very light plus, can also charge on a powerbank too.

couple of important details you missed mate. Digital stability doesn't work at 4k, as it uses area around the video which it discards it only works at 1080p on the previous sony actioncam an at 1440p on the new GoPro 5. So the Mechanical(optical) stability working at 4k is a first. sony 4k action cams(this and the previous mode) do 100mbs (max 60mbs on goppro 5s) 4k at 60mbs is far too little. the extra 40% bandwidth gives much better quality video, although you do need SDcards with the U3 (class 10 or U1 will give a media error at 100mbs) I have the previous 4k sony and never had a problem on my motorcycle in torrential rain. lens protector i think is not required. I've dropepd mine so many times, crashed the motorcycle. had it on my helmet for over a year and it's fine. Great video.

The unit itself is splash-proof (water resistant) not waterproof. However, if you purchase at B&H, they throw in the waterproof housing and don't add any tax if you live outside of New York. I purchased mine online this morning.

@rgym sky The problem specifying waterproof levels for a company is really dangerous. as even with good o-rings and well design doors and covers you never can rely on the user to make sure the camera is prepared correctly. I'd get/ues the waterproof camera if you intend to submerge it. The problem(and the reason i didnt use this on my helmet cam configuration is I wanted to use an external mic, that cannot be plugged in with the case. I bluetooth option would be delightful. I live in seattle where it rains hard a lot and have the camera has been drench and even with the lower door open for the mic plug it still works fine.

Well, we can't call it a "design flaw" but concerning the finger grip Sony dropped a great opportunity... They could destroy GoPro cameras for users like me by allowing the user to flip the remote screen towards the front of the camera by using a different design on the finger grip (what could be quite unique and useful on an action camera, so the user could see his shot while making it in front of the camera. Vloggers will agree with me about this one, I guess).

Can you adjust the mic volume levels when using a lav mic plugged directly into the camera? Most videos I see of people using lav mics with this camera, the audio is clipping badly. It's too loud, so I wanted to know if we can turn it down?

For me, GoPro is like a still camera form factor and Sony's Action Cam is like a camcorder form factor, so when there is somebody thinks that Sony's form factor is a No-Go, all I really can come up with is that they have just being affected by GoPro's name. Of course, each kind of form factor has its good and bad, but it is up to you to find the best way to make the most of it.

totally understand why decided to go for optical image stabilization - I've got hundreds of GBs of hero4 videos filmed in the car and they are totally unusable as-is and require some sort of manual software stabilization and even then it might not look as good.

The shape is weird at first, but it's actually very aerodynamic. It's basically made for bicycle riders or motorcycle riders, which is where the optical stabilisation really shows its worth.

I would've imagined that the ring grip is meant to be held like a camcorder. So index through the ring and your other fingers resting on the top of the camera whilst the screen is tilted back. Not sure if you're using it wrong but it's an idea

+Nipponsei Ed The tiny sensor on the Sony x3000 and the GoPro make them noisy in low light. It'll work but my gh4 is still better for indoor video. Really you can get even more light from cameras with bigger sensors like the Sony A series

Funny you mention the MiniDisc. I remember that, too. It could have been SO great, but Sony messed it up in an epic way. I always LOL about that. I'm really leaning to the Sony cam instead of a GoPro for paramotoring. The IS and image quality are the kickers. The Sony looks to kick the GoPro's ass in those areas.

Sony is a great camera, i only had 2 problems with it. 1. the shape, when i have been to the waterpark, i was looking like an unicorn with the camera on my head. 2. 1080 HD medium view on the dash of my car is somehow blurry, out of focus.

I'll adapt that weird ring thing to attach a shotgun mic. That way I can easily change the mic direction to record what's in front of the camera or my voice from the back of the camera. And will also add +1 point in weirdness with a fluffy windshield. I'll be the most pretentious kid in town.

NihongoGamer It can shoot up to 4k at 30fps now and it's quite hard to believe considering how small it is. I suppose that would be a pain but I remember seeing a few gimbals that weren't too bulky, depending on your price range if you type in portable gimbal in Google you can find quite a few that just look like they're attached to a selfie stick

If you understand about the technical details you'll know there is nothing special about how the Hero 5 Session can record 4K video. Herro 5 session uses a smaller 10MP 1/3.2" image sensor than the 12MP 1/2.3" image sensor in Hero 4 and 5 even smaller than most high end smartphones that only 6 - 9mm thick. There are times when using gimbal is not a great idea like when you mountain biking or surfing. The advantages of Sony Action Cam is not only in stabilization but also video quality thanks to better dynamic range, low light, full pixel readout and higher bitrate (Up to 100Mbps).

I have a Sony Action cam with the older Live View remote which is better than this new one and I just bought the GoPro Hero 5 and I love it, kills the Sony. The touchscreen and everything else with the GoPro smokes the Sony. Sony live view remote basically becomes useless once you go into the water, loses connection with the camera. GoPro leapfrogged everyone with the new Hero 5.

i think you should some comparison videos then you will see how far behind is gopro5. I was about to buy hero5 but i realized that there is huge difference between two, sony fdr3000 is much much better especially in low light and image stabilization. I also prefer separate screen than having it on behind of the camera, how can i use it when its on my helmet or drone, useless.

I doubt the GoPro Hero 5 is much better than the FDR-X3000. The Hero 5 is the same video quality as the hero 4 black and the FDR-X3000 has a better image sensor with an optical SteadyShot. Sony don't mess around with the image quality. I've seen a famous motovlogger named ChaseOnTwoWheels return the hero 5 but not the session.

If you watch ONE, just ONE comparison video between GoPro 5 and Sony FDR-3000X, you'll be helpless but to notice that GoPro5 is destroyed, obliterated and annihilated with no bones left against the Sony's B.O.S.S Optical IMage Stabilization. Don't bring that stupid fake Digital Image stabilization crap in GoPro5 to the talk. Watch the comparison video and if you still tell me GoPro5 is better, I suggest you to go to a doctor to get your eyes checked.
