I think Iga may be becoming a little like the Agassi of this generation. Agassi was famous for keeping his cool in five setters, even when he was down the first two sets. This was very routine for Andre. He would just settle down then and win the next three in a row. Iga was talking the other day, after she lost the first set badly, about how, well, she knew she would have the second set to recalibrate. Cool as a cucumber. I honestly think that attitude can lead to these three set matches because she does not play as desperately as possible in the first set, knowing that, hey, she has won these three set matches before and will again.

@johnpaval9646 Жыл бұрын
Well, Iga was only asking for the respect which decent players show each other. In fact, most players are not abusive; they do not try to serve before their opponent is ready. In fact, I remember how once last year Iga took a time penalty because she waited until Coco Gauff was ready. When Gauff finally held up her hand, and said, clearly, "OK, I'm ready." then Iga served. But by this time, the 25 second clock had run out. So the ref penalized Iga for being respectful. The way Iga tells it, and I believe she is honest, Vondrousova was trying to serve the next point after only 5 seconds had passed on the 25 second shot clock, clearly trying to gain an advantage by rushing her opponent whether she was ready or not. I think that's a disrespectful way to try to gain an advantage on your serve. Hat's off to Iga for standing up to it. People are trying to compare tennis to running sports like basketball, but it isn't. It's more like baseball, where the one serving is like the pitcher pitching to the batter. In baseball, the batter gets time to step into the box, and can step out of the box if he is not ready. Maybe tennis needs this rule, so stop people like Vondrousova from trying to beat their opponent not by fairly serving to them when they are ready, but unfairly catching them unready so that they cannot play their best tennis.
@ciarypowykonie3096 Жыл бұрын
Umpire was probably right. But it is umpire job to execute rules. Players will bend rules if they are allowed and if it fits them. I really cannot grasp why people are surprised that players use many means to achieve the main goal of their job, which is to win.
@johnpaval9646 Жыл бұрын
@@ciarypowykonie3096 Oh, this umpire is more concerned about the letter of the law than she is about the unwritten rules regarding respect for the players. Traditionally, rule or no rule, players respect their opponents and do not serve if they can see their opponent is not ready to receive it. That's just common courtesy in this sport. For an umpire to ignore that, is disrespectful of the sport and its traditions and its players, really. Not only that, but when Iga was distracted by the fact that people were walking around looking for their seats during her serves, this umpire chastised her for it. You know what umpires USUALLY do instead? They make an announcement telling people to please hurry up and take their seats. Instead, this umpire criticized the player. If you "really cannot grasp" why tennis is NOT a sport which is about winning by any means at all, then you do not grasp the history of tennis and how it is not like other sports where "just win baby" applies. Tennis has a history of being a little bit above that level of just...vulgarity and savagery. And no, the umpire's job is not just to enforce the rules. It is to enforce the rules in keeping with the spirit of fair play and respectfulness between players on the court. If you don't grasp that, either, then...I'm sorry...you just don't grasp tennis.
