What I love about this is Iggy clearly respects Tom and is trying to take him seriously, and Tom is being his charming, bizarre, offputting, self, delighting in his role. His entire purpose in this scene is to take Iggy's earnest, nervousness and twist it for his own sick pleasure. This is so wonderfully awkward. It's beautiful.

I like it because the only thing Iggy and Tom really have in common is the fact that they are moderately successful musicians. They don't know each other, they don't really have anything to say to each other, and they don't get along particularly well in this scene. It's perfect, and broken, and real.
@longhairhiggins Жыл бұрын
I find it interesting how you used the term broken. I know Jim describes a lot of things that way, his love of Neil Young's guitar work and the Wu Tang Clan. Anyways, I hope you're doing alright, 11 years after a great comment, and things aren't -too- broken or real.

If you want to see a similar scene such as this only closer to reality -- check the video document on KZbin that was a filming of a dinner at a hotel that writer & Beat Generation icon William Burroughs had with artist Andy Warhol. You would think these two men would have much to say and share. But while they did speak, it was awkward and didn't tell you much. Burroughs was conversational but aloof and stiff. Warhol never took his headphones off and he was impressionable. A "fan" of Burroughs and a little star-struck especially when Burroughs autographs a book and then was asked to draw something in the book. Their main conversation was about chicken fried steak. Not very intellectual or artsy. Just as peculiar as this staged scene with Iggy & Tom -- which is a classic now. Many celebrities do not mix. The Beatles did not get off to a good start with Elvis Presley when they met in Bel Air in 1965 either. You would have thought they would have been enthusiastic about meeting each other and comparing notes -- but witnesses said it was quite a drag. Same happened when The Beach Boys met Elvis. Nothing. Apparently, because of all the fanfare Elvis was exposed to he never took rock music seriously after his initial successes. So, it's assumed Elvis had nothing in common with these musicians. I wonder if Tom & Iggy ever recorded anything together? Wrote together? The way David Bowie did with Iggy. No matter...not everyone who you'd think could get along famously...ever do.
+Barry Tilles - Makes you wonder Barry what Jimi and Brian Jones may have been talking about as they walked. You'd like to think they were talking about teaming up for a possible record. But they were probably talking about the Yankees losing the baseball game night before.

+Luis Miranda (octavefunkz) - It's amazing to me how you can make a statement like that and not substantiate a single word. What are you talking about? (I) "...don't understand Jim Jarmush and/or the difference between fact and fiction...." What does all that BS refer to Luis? What? Clarify if you can or care to. Because none of it makes any sense standing alone. Try to express yourself....or the problem you have with my statement. Because there's nothing there that is negative about Jim Jarmush. Try to start your sentences with capitals if you want me to take you seriously.

The reason Tom Waits is better than Iggy in these scenes is because of Tom's experience as a storyteller, actor, a personality. Attending a Waits' concert you see him at the piano -- animated & telling these incredible stories between songs. Iggy is good, but he's a one-dimensional character-performer more than a personality. A little naïve but charming. Waits, he's a well-developed eccentric. Or, maybe -- we're all reading a little too much into this coffee banter of Jarmusch? Mmm?
