@nicholascarpentier94353 ай бұрын
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was a game released to the Nintendo GameCube back in 2004. It was recently re-released on the Nintendo Switch in 2024 to celebrate it turning 20 years old. The game follows the one and only Mario, as he travels through a paper-based world in order to save Princess Peach from evil once again. This game has been a staple in the gaming community since 2004 when the game was originally released and has remained in the hearts of the Nintendo kids who first played it when they were kids. Its story, gameplay, and characters make for a phenomenal game for a person to let themselves be swept up in. I played this game with my sister and brother when I was seven and it has been my favorite game ever since. It is very close to my heart and a huge part of my childhood. The First Media Key: Balance When we approach the media, we need to look at it from all angles. We should not just absorb the media without thinking, or letting ourselves be sucked into whatever pops up in front of us. A careful awareness must be had when looking at what you consume in the media. “Without balance, without a willingness to look at the media from every possible angle, we can’t possibly form right judgments” (Gan, pg. 22). Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is rated E for “Everyone”, this is because no matter what age, as long as you can operate the controller and read through what’s happening, anyone will be able to enjoy the game. Looking at the game as a whole, there is very little that would or should turn someone away from the game unless it is simply not your thing. The Second Media Key: Attitude Awareness People may not think this, but the media can have a tight grasp on our subconsciousness, and is constantly feeding us different ways to think about things. People might not think that it affects them or changes how they think but no matter who says this, it's a lie. We’re all “susceptible to the media’s messages because we’re sensory creatures” (Gan, pg. 38). Attitude awareness is all about the tone of the media we post and consume. What is its message? What is it trying to say to us or make us believe? Within Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the main character (Mario) needs to make it through the paper world to save Princess Peach and is only able to do so with the help of others that he encounters throughout his journey. He touches their lives and they also help impact him as he ventures to save the princess. The attitude of this game wants to show the importance of being surrounded by those that will help you and usher you into new and better chapters of your life. The Third Media Key: The Dignity of the Human Person The third media key is the dignity of the human person. Media should “bring people together. It should promote understanding of the human person and human communities” (Gan, pg. 52). Our lives are deeply connected to how we relate to the people around us. It is crucial that whatever is put out in the media and whatever is consumed through the media should uplift human dignity. In this game, the whole objective of the game is to save a human being (Princess Peach) from the evil that threatens to devour her. Throughout these endeavors, Mario and his partners also help other characters who are afflicted by threats and help them overcome these evils, bringing hope and joy to all those they encounter. If this doesn’t display human dignity, I don’t know what does. The Fourth Media Key: Truth-Filled The media is to be truth-filled. This is a very self-explanatory key of the media, “When we use the media, when we enter online communities and virtual worlds, we mustn’t leave the truth behind” (Gan, pg. 68). The surrounding elements of the game are obviously not very truthful in a sense because the story takes place in a paper world with many different characters that came from a group of people’s imagination. This game may not be telling the truth through the setup and the world in which it plays out, but it isn’t trying to tell you that that’s reality either. The writers of the dialogue within the game knew what it was and they actually put in so many jokes and comments pointing out the fact that it is just a game, also making fun of the Mario franchise throughout the game. The game is, however, truthful in how it deals with the experiences of the characters and the importance of the battle between good and evil. The Fifth Media Key: Inspiring The fifth media key points us towards the reality that the media needs to push or inspire us towards higher goods. The question to be asked when referring to inspiration in the media is “whether this is contributing to authentic human development” (Gan, pg. 84). Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door inspires a heroism within the one who plays it. It pushes you, the protagonist, to make good decisions and move in a courageous way when facing the obstacles ahead of you. In the game, Mario is a selfless person who constantly gives of himself. Despite these obvious themes, the game may not explicitly bring a player to this end all the time, but it most definitely has the possibility to inspire courage within the action of the player. The Sixth Media Key: Skillfully Developed “Sensitive, intelligent, compelling, and artistic storytelling” (Gan, pg. 99). This is what is being looked for within the media. It cannot just be a nice thought or a cool idea. That’s not what makes good media. It needs other components to appeal to humanity in different ways so as to grasp the attention. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is an absolute masterpiece when it comes to how skillfully developed it is. Even though it is a Mario game, don’t assume you know the ins and outs of what the story would look like. The intricacy, care, and diversity that this story brings to the table is so much more deep and complex than any old Mario game. The game beautifully revolves around the theme of being in a paper world. It takes place within a book, and every new part of the game is considered a new chapter in this story. How the mechanics work are so intricate and really draws you into the world. Each time you battle you are taken to a stage where the characters fight as if they are in a play. Each of the characters, even down to the NPC’s (non-playable characters), have detailed backstories. And maybe one of the most glorious aspects of all. The music composed by Yuka Tsujiyoko is a work of majesty. Each song captures perfectly the atmosphere of the game and the parts of the story that are unfolding. Not enough could be said about how skillfully and carefully this game was made. The Seventh Media Key: Motivated and Relevant to Experience This is something that should be very important to those who consume any part of the media. That it be motivated and relevant to the human experience. How does this form of media reach out to and touch the very experience of those who encounter it? In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, despite being in a paper world that is not realistic to anyone’s lived experience, it is really within the characters and the story that the relevance takes place. There are characters who have lost loved ones, are overcome by guilt, feel abandoned, been abused, and have nowhere else to go. Despite this, all of the characters come together in their brokenness to save the world from darkness. Is this not relevant to the human experience? Is this not something that drives people and propels them forward? That despite what you’ve been through, that you can come together with those that love you and overcome the darkness that awaits? It points to the fact that we are all the heroes of our own story, so let's fight the good fight.

There’s a culture where you nod for no and shake for yes. Maybe in the demons language/ culture, a curse is a gift in our language.

This, Mario RPG, and Star ocean 2 are the only full priced-new games i've bought in years.

The best Paper Mario and one of my all time favorite RPGs. Every gamer should give this one a chance

i’m glad that Nintendo and Intelligent system have brought paper Mario TTYD back realizing that it had such potential to be a great RPG and that the fans were crying desperately for this game to be recognize it proves that the mario RPG fandom is strong, as someone who played the original I’m crying as i can’t believe that this was actually happening 🥹

This is proof we just need an remake of the entire Gamecube library. There are too many games locked on that system.

Despite what narrator says - No, you don't have to play the game.

Super random conspiracy! Y'all know how Luigi keeps updating Mario on his adventure, with different characters at his side..... Well what if they drop a Luigis version of paper Mario? Me & my bro always talked about this growing up..... A fan boy can dream can he 😅😅

Finally a paper Mario game that isn’t just filled with Toads and repetitive gameplay.

People complaining about Nintendo just now making a remake of a 20 year old game when Bethesda keeps porting a 13 year old game every five years instead of making a new game. Double standard much?
@raskolnikov64438 ай бұрын
Nintendo is guilty of that as well
@videogollumer8 ай бұрын
@@raskolnikov6443 If you're talking about the virtual console, that's a bit different. Besides, my point is that they keep re-releasing Skyrim, aka Elder Scrolls V, every five years and STILL haven't made Elder Scrolls VI.

This game is great, but some of the dialog scenes are too long.

They gave it a number based on a scale from the number 1 to the number 10. In conclusion, they rated the game.
