Thanks for your videos. I have a 1978 Yamaha DT 250 with a 6 volt system. The spark plug coil was not working I cut into the plastic and found that where the wire was soldered to a lug inside was the source of the problem and was able to repair it. You are right the knockoff inexpensive coils do not work

This is absolutely the best explanation of the ignition system I've come across , My grandfather was an industrial / agricultural equipment mechanic, my father was auto / motorcycle mechanic, my brother is an electrical engineer working for Raytheon. I went another route but am ASE certified so I think it makes my endorsement qualified (per my cousin Vinny clause) Great work sir I'm subscribing doing a great service on alerting the public about the coils, such a rip off 75 bucks a pop coil pack times 8 cylinders on a truck plus labor! ching ching

great information, my son recently bought a 1979 ke 125, that was supposed to have been running when parked in a shed 20 years ago but not running now. After getting it home, and having discovered that it had no spark. We then removed the magneto and discovered that the lowest coil is missing ( I assume this is the coil that you are talking about in the video above) and someone appears to have "rewired" one of the lighting coils to replace it. So there is only two of the 3 coils currently there. There is a red and black wire hanging loose. Will this setup work ? If not do you know where can I purchase either a new or used complete stator > thanks and again, great information ,There also appears to be no regulator on this bike, although one is shown in the parts fiche for a 79

Thanks for explaining this so simply for folks like me……you should be a instructor if your not already! I’m haven’t problems with erratic starts, it will run then for no reason it won’t start. I’m assuming that it’s the ground on the high voltage coil might be frayed or broken. I will look here this evening and see if that’s the culprit. I never would have even known that could be a problem until I watched your simplified video, thanks!

I have the same exact ignition system i am working on a ke100, and having a hard time getting spark, was thinking it was the coil at first, but now i dont really think it is after watching your video. And now I will straight test the coil the way you showed. Thank you this video is very helpful. I am confused tho because when I take my multimeter to the connector at the end of the stator. I have a yellow wire, black wire, light green wire, and pink wire. There is also a separate light blue wire (I think the light green is the neutral switch wire?). When i touch my multimeter to the black wire, and check cont. between the other wires, I get cont with all the other wires except the light green wire. Is this normal or do I have a short in one of my charging coils or something? Having a hard time getting this figured out. At least my service manual should be here tomorrow, but even then idk if i can figure it out.

Question, is it possible to have weak spark. Reason I ask is a motorbike mechanic on a forum posted that there is no such thing as weak spark, only no spark or complete spark. I am having problems kicksstarting my bike and when I do a spark test it appears that the spark is weak and inconsistent. The symptosm seem to point towards an ignition system problem where I'm getting enough spark for the bike to run well but not enough for it to kickstart. The bike runs great, but is just murder to kickstart. Carbie and pilot jet has been cleaned.

@@2strokeguru Thanks for that. I have a new iridium spark plug but am going to check the points and other things you mentioned in your video. Just starting on some of your 2-stroke ignition video too. I've just acquired a 1997 KTM 250 EXC. It runs very well but the kickstarter action is rather strange, as if it's got abnormally high compression. It's a hard jerky action and there is often a nasty metal-like crack of some sort partway through the kick. And it often gets caught a bit at top dead centre when kicker is returned to the top. You can't kick it in quick repeated succession like other kickers both because of the hard jerky action as well as getting caught a bit at top dead centre. I though at first it might be crank or something mechanical down there but it runs well when going which I'm assuming would reflect when it's running. So I'm onto ignition. And spark does seem weak and inconsistent. I'm new to mechanics as well as motorbike riding so it's a steep learning curve. Just bought this bike from a neighbour a month ago, my first bike.

@alantaylor6691
@alantaylor6691 3 жыл бұрын
@@2strokeguru Sorry Kevin I can be a bit slow with this kind of stuff and am struggling to understand what you're telling me. Starting from the top: "keep in mind this ignition system design is 6volt developed before the bike was built" I think what you're saying there is that the ignition system you used in this video is a 6-volt system which was developed before my 1997 bike was built (implying that my bike does not have a 6-volt system (probably 12-volt). "its used on many vintage bikes so using modern plugs like iridium plugs require a much higher voltage to use this kind of plug" Meaning the 6-volt ignition system is used on many vitnage bikes, and iridium plugs require a much higher voltage to spark than 6-volt ignition systems. "the best plug is the plug designed for this application" This final sentence seems to be going right over my head. Are you saying that I should not use the iridium plug on my bike because it's voltage requirements are too high for the igntion system I have on my bike? Although that doesn't seem to marry with what I interpreted of the previous sentences.
