If you feel like building a 5" Freestyle Drone is too hard, you just need the right guidance.
So, I built a course with 71 highly detailed but simple modules, breaking down absolutely everything! They're can't be anything missing, if there is, I will add it. Stop Discharging your LiPo Batteries on mains, use a field pack to recycle unused packs. You also save a lot of money buying a field pack instead of buying a tonne of batteries

I kind of agree with your basic point here but there are a LOT of variables on what will work best for different people and situations. I fly a lot of micros and those batteries are fairly cheap so I'd rather just buy a bunch of them and not have to worry about charging in the field. For racing, you need to have a bunch as well because it moves fast and you don't want to be caught without a battery when your name is called for the next heat, but you still should have a field charger setup because races can go on for a long time. If you're just freestyling and have time to burn then sure, having a few flight packs and a charging setup is probably a decent way to go. Personally, I'd rather not mess with charging in the field and prefer to just bring enough packs for each quad. The other thing I would mention is that you can get a SLA battery like those used for mobility scooters etc with 35+ Amp Hour capacity for well under $100 vs that tattu lipo that's only got 14 Amp Hour capacity and is well over $200. I've used a Mighty Max 35AH SLA battery in the field when racing for a couple of years now, just to make sure I don't run out of charged packs, and it's been great. I bring at least 10 packs when racing and keep a few charging at all times so I never have to worry.

Thanks Darren! I ended up buying a Predator 1400Watt quite generator for $400. I use this at the flying field now and it surely is a luxury.

I would disagree here. As a professional drone racer I fly close to 100 Packs a day. Luckily I do have electricity at my field, but always have to go home with a few (sometimes many charged packs). It is not uncommon for me to have to go home early due to broken equipment or running out of time to fly and finish of the last packs. If I was to use field lipos for this kind of flying I would need around 10 of those for a full practice day and that's just not feasible for me. This might work for the casual freestyler, but def not for the hard core racer... I personally use "storage dischargers" at the end of the day :)

G’Day @HaloWalker welcome to the channel and thanks for the comment! Absolutely. You are flying a volume of packs a day that most pilots dream they ever could. In your scenario, if you didn’t have electricity you’d probably have a larger and more commercial solution for field charging or just more packs. Good luck for this DRL season!

How do you manage your storage pack then? Are you just leaving it at whatever charge it is at after recycling your flight packs into it? Do you just never bother with storage charging the storage pack? I can't imagine the eternity it would take to storage charge a beast like that without a pretty beefy resistor.
@Originaljonny2bad

or rather than using you charger too dischage packs get a dedicated discharger, plus its really not wise too have any lipos left at full charge.
@DarrenAllatt
@DarrenAllatt 2 жыл бұрын
Dischargers just turn electricity into heat, so a waste of electricity... you can leave these giant packs at full charge for a while with minimal issues because you aren't putting them through turmoil like normal lipos. But, stick all your lipos through recycle at the end of the day
@Originaljonny2bad

@@DarrenAllatt it's not safe too leave a lipo charge. Honestly I think your giving bad advice. As for a discharger my idst discharger dosent need mains power. Discharges a full lipo in a matter of minutes. I feel el you should tell people about all the options not just make out that the way you do things is better. That's not always the case for everyone and good luck taking those filed packs on a plane lol
@DarrenAllatt

You're most welcome to your view on things.. A discharger converts the energy from your lipo to heat. Field packs are safe to leave charged. lol. Don't plan on taking them on a plane

Interesting. So you charge a couple of packs and the field charger and then what? Charge the rest when you notice that you need them in the field? How long does that take at 2C. And is 2C okay in the long run?
@DarrenAllatt
@DarrenAllatt 2 жыл бұрын
So I pre-charge my 6 packs, and my field pack. Go out at fly, as I finish a pack, it goes straight on the charger. I have dual channels, so can charge 2 at once. Pick up the next pack and fly. By continually cycling through charging packs, I don't have to think about battery management. When I am done for the day, they are usually all still fully charged. So plug them all into the parallel board, and recycle them into the field pack

@@DarrenAllatt I'm normally fine with 3 packs for each drone (most of the time don't use all). When I need more I charge in the car going to the next location. So that 14 Ah 6S would have around 316 Wh, I guess you can't take it on a plane. But for someone who flies a lot in mostly one location your way seems pretty well thought out.

At the moment I'm not able to fly many packs. So if I have to discharge a lipo it's usually only one or two. For now I use my istd BG-8S to charge my cellphone or tablet. Brings my lipo down to storage charge and I didn't waste a charge.

I just use an old car battery to run my charger out in the field. It doesn’t work well enough to start the car, but it is fine for charging lipos

Quick question, When you are using the recycling feature and charging the feild pack, won't the feild pack be unbalanced as it's just charging it through the xt60.
@DarrenAllatt

One thing I forgot to mention: My field packs don’t typically sit at full charge at home.. When I am out flying, they usually end up discharged to 3.5v by the end of the day. After recycling my lipos, I still need to charge my field packs to storage voltage between uses.

How do you safely store and/or charge a 288Wh battery? Even a full size Bat-Safe has a max rating of 200Wh - I’d be very nervous driving around with one that size in case it got punctured or otherwise caught fire. Thanks also for mentioning battery safety at the end!
@DarrenAllatt
@DarrenAllatt 2 жыл бұрын
It goes in my Lipo safe bag with all my other batteries when travelling, which is in my backpack.... When not being used, its on my shelf. These 288Wh batteries aren't getting the abuse the Lipos on our quads get, and barely even being discharged at anywhere near their capability. So they are pretty safe.

If you only charge your fied pack to 4.05V per cell, you can leave it like that stored for a while. Always a fully charged field pack around isnt good for the lipo packs life. Electric cars also only charge to 80% to extend the battery life.
@DarrenAllatt

Agree, most of the time, I’m using my field idk in full even after recycling my left over packs. So when I get home that gets charged up to storage voltage before I need to use it again.

My challenge with answering that is, I’m in Australia and we have limited access to batteries. CNHL, Tattu and AU-Line are the typical batteries we have access to as they have Australian warehouses. I haven’t had any issues with the CNHL mini star batteries, but it’s prefer TATTU, except they are way more expensive.

Yes, I have a lead acid battery from a 4x4 that I got for free when my neighbours moved. I trickle charge it when I have excess solar power during the day and recycle left over packs into it. This keeps it pretty full and I don't really need to worry too much about it. Using 6 packs for micros and 3 or 4 packs for 5 inch, I'm never out of batteries. I use 2 ToolkitRC M8 and can run both off the lead acid battery with no issues.

How much does a drill battery cost? So I went onto Amazon, a Dewalt 20v 5Ah battery is $70 … so that’s a 5,000mah 5S pack. When you can just use a Li-Ion Pack anyway.
