I sure hate static stretching. Any excuse not to do it works for me.

Static stretching only caused problems for me. What mobility i have comes from actual strength training exercises and going through a decent but not excessive range of motion. Will never toe touches again due to risk of sciatica.. Other stretching gave me loose joints notably in one ankle. Very much agree with a lot said here. Though its nice to shake the muscles out after a workout and that can involve some light stretching holds...and especially if cramping

For a long time I had to listen to lectures about static stretching from my non-running relatives, based on their hazy memory of primary school phys ed class. Luckily they've stopped.

Was the original thinking against static stretch based on the paper, which only applied to elite runners?

It would help if you defined what you mean by "stretching". Taking muscles to their current comfortable limit and holding for several seconds or beyond comfortable and holding (to extend muscle ROM) or either of the above but not holding? Also absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. There's no scientific proof that Yoga makes people more flexible. I think most people recognise that Yoga does make people more flexible, but you can't create a random double blind protocol to test the hypothesis, so therefore there is no "evidence". More generally simple advice is to mobilise before a run and stretch as part of your S&C routine. Stretching should always be balanced by corresponding strength work to maintain joint stability, and always allow several hours post full deep stretching (seeking to extend current ROM) to allow for recovery of full proprioception in the running gait.

I've been running for 9 years now and always appreciated the higher flexibility and good feeling in the legs when doing static stretching. I'm doing the same before and after, and it works very well for me. I even got more flexible within the last few weeks. (Maybe it is an unconscious warm-up and cool-down and this is what's working well, but I just don't feel the same as you described.)

You are 100% wrong. Stretching before a run helps prevent injury

...... Wait you guys still believe in the 30 mins window after a workout nutrition consumption??😂

works well mate, take protein shake with water, would lead you to hydrate yourself & then you can possibly do some mobility or some body weight exercise including core exercise. They are not suggesting to have full fledged meal within 30 minutes. Idea is to hydrate yourself & if you can get protein along with it, i don't see any harm mate.

I think everyone seems to believe it. Muscles are very receptive to nutrients immediately following a workout.

I've changed my warmup routine, after new info from a famous KZbinr. I'm doing a couple basic dynamic movements, 15 minute jogging warmup, then 5-10 minutes more intense dynamic movements. Results have been interesting, and I think positive.

Watch a dog or cat after a nap, they do quick static stretching. How about Yoga, you don't do a workout before. You just start doing it. Confusing.

Correct to advise against static stretching before training but very flawed metaphors (uncooked sphagetti?!😂) and botched up explanation of the physics! Good advice overall though and a very good channel for runners. Just stay away from physics guys.

This makes me feel better about not stretching. I just usually walk, do some band work, hamstring sweeps or leg swings 🤷‍♂️.

Sorry but ridiculous. I’ve been running longer than you have been alive and let me tell you, you are just plain wrong. So you have a P. H.D in what field? I’m glad you mentioned you can still stretch if you think it helps you. 😂😂

I heard Galloway say the same thing. He had not seen any evidence for stretching being beneficial. Neither before nor after.

Static stretching should not be done before a run, but can be done after a run. I believe it is beneficial to do after while the muscles are still warm as it helps to prevent soreness and stiffness, which can also affect your running. I'm also a fan of yoga on rest days. It has definitely made me more flexible.

I've heard this from multiple sources about static stretching prior to a workout being detrimental. I have almost never static stretched in most of my 42 years and have rarely been injured. They say it lengthens and weakens the muscle (prior to applying force to it).
