Upgrading/ sidegrading to an iGPU of the same era is NOT something I ever thought was possible

Actually the HD 530 has 192 shaders, like the 710. 24 is the number of execution units, which have 8 shaders each, even on newer Intel graphics.

Oh crap you're right! Thanks for the info.

Intel really improved a lot with 530, i remember original gt 710 ddr3 beating hd 4000 and ones that came before it easily. I put one in a cheap dell with 3470 and it worked like a charm, later down the road, I got a 1030 gddr5 and the i5 was bottlenecking it so I got a 3770.

Thanks. The results were about what I expected. The HD 530 trading blows with the GT 710 GDDR5. I got a UHD 630 with my i5 8500T and its fine for me since I don't do much graphically intensive stuff and the hardware encode/decode with QuickSync is quite nice considering older Intel HD Graphics (like pre HD 530 ones) have QuickSync problems or flat out is not detected. Weirdly I've been on a search for kinda modern iGPU performance but on a dedicated PCIE GPU form so its power efficient compared to my RX 5600XT when I don't need the GPU horsepower. Only the RX 550 is a somewhat reasonable purchase price-wise since the GT 1030 is like 2~2.5x of a RX 550.

I enjoyed the video, thanks.

Good video. Just for fun, I tried Batman Arkham Asylum on a gt 710 1gb ddr3 that has 8x's electrical (A tiny fanless card that is great for troubleshooting) and on the Intel 770 graphics (13700k cpu). I overclocked both, I got 2000mhz stable on the Intel graphics and didn't get far on the gt 710, +40 on the core and +110 on the memory. The Intel 770 graphics was a LOT faster, it held a locked 60fps with the highest settings at 1440p. The gt 710 was limited to 1080p with medium settings and averaged around 45fps if my memory serves me correctly. I was surprised at the Intel 770 graphics.

Completely different ballpark. Intel igpus have improved dramatically since 8th gen in particular.

I think some of it also came down to driver optimization. Like for instance, I saw the HD 530 perform better in DX11 but struggle in DX9 in comparison. Reminds me a lot of Arc gpus today and how weird their drivers were, especially with them having to emulate DX9 support

i noticed that some drivers migh limit fps to 30 for intel

Hmmm very possible. I'll hafta look into that when I get a chance.

Depending on the BIOS, you can overclock the iGPU as well 🤔 sometimes even with voltage adjustments Also interesting would be how the iGPU would perform on DDR3 vs DDR4, as the 6th generation supports both.

GDDR5 indeed helps GT 710 a lot, back then it's almost only half as fast as HD 530

woa these results were very interesting! i was expecting the 710 to lose in every game

The thing is that while the GT710 is more or less useless nowadays, the HD530 still has 'certain' use cases, namely H.265 QuickSync encoding (QSV). While recording/streaming with OBS, you can just offload the encoding to the iGPU. Of course, modern GPUs have great encoders, and by "modern" I mean Pascal/Polaris or newer, so you're only going to notice a ~2-3% performance difference. But on older cards, it can be pretty significant.

One thing I noticed is the 710's are not listed as having nvenc, but they actually do...hence you see in the video using nvenc to encode that video. I've used one in the past for an obs streamer pc. So I totally get where you're coming from and you're right, but you can also use the 710 as the encoder as well.
@cosmicnebula30232 ай бұрын
@@jims_junk The actual GK208 die that the GT710 uses doesn't have an Nvenc chip. Odds are the software allows it to be chosen as an option, but falls back to software x264 encoding or uses the shading units for encoding.

I would definitely use the HD 530 more, for one thing, I wouldn't need to occupy that GPU slot with as something as weak as GT 710, and for another - Codecs, I would rather to convert/render videos faster.

Frame times are better on the 710 because it has dedicated ram, compared to shared DDR4 ram from the CPU

When I worked a repair shop, our top of the line was 700 or 900 series. They always had a GT 740 4G available and we used it occasionally. Seemed like a decent light gamer card, nowadays crippled by no Vulkan, but was a decent card in its own right. Could you find one of those and test it?
