Thanks for doing this. This was an era of computers that was just before I really became interested in tinkering around with them so I was always curious what the difference between these two chips was and how they would stand up against each other.

The Celeron version of the Core 2 Duo are actually literally Celerons. They are a tad slower than the Pentium Dual Cores due to the half the cache (1mb vs 2mb). Every generation of the Core 2 Duo has a Pentium DC and Celeron counterpart from the 65nm based Core 2 Duo down to the 45nm which is where the E5200 is based of.

Those of us into PCs back then know the Dual Core kicked the dog piss out of the D at half the clock speed.

I had a Pentium D 820 2.8GHz. At 95watts, it ran hot for what is was. Had a huge Zalman CNPS9500A-LED cooler to keep it under control. Still did everything I needed it to do. I believe I had a Bio-Star motherboard with 4gb of ram, Windows XP. Brings back fond memories.

I recently found an old Pentium G3220 in my closet, dual 3Ghz cores, and thought about how it would perform compared to the Pentium D 830, also dual core and 3GHz. That would be hilarious.
@3dfxvoodoocards6 Жыл бұрын
Nice benchmarks. The Conroe and Wolfdale CPUs were so much faster and overall better than the Pentium D generation. The E5200 was an excellent budget CPU able to overclock at default voltage to around 3000-3400 mhz

Thanks! Yeah I was very surprised at how decent of a cpu it is.

The Celeron 4205u runs at a little over half the Pentium D's speed, also being a dual core. Would be interesting to see how they test against eachother, considering the 4205u was being sold at least until 2020. It's worth noting that my specific model of laptop with the 4205u (Dell Latitude 3310) shipped with a screen defect that is very common. I've met at least one other person at my high school who also has dead pixels covering around a tenth of the screen, so it shouldn't be hard to find one for free if you're okay with testing a laptop with a slightly ruined screen.

the 7zip comparison is interesting, the "quad pumped" nature of the 4(especially a bus dependent D) might have lended itself to doing far better isolated math calcuations when the other throttling factors of the 4 were not in play (as much) as in 7 zip.
@jims_junk Жыл бұрын
Good thought.
@xys007 Жыл бұрын
Branch prediction combined with long instruction pipeline is very effective with simple repetitive tasks. 7-zip is one of them, simple benchmarks like passmark benefit too. But when task gets complicated branch misdirection happens more. The longer the pipeline the more steps has to be tracked back when misdirection occurs. In Core architecture they reduced pipeline length drastically ( from 31 to 14 ), it's much better for gaming, and slightly less effective for simple task like benchmarks. Shorter pipelines didn't really hurt performance unless someone is zip-ing files all day long. 😂

Pentium 4 was such a disaster for Intel. They were lucky that they still worked on old P6-derived architectures (Pentium M) so they could go to "Core" architecture. AMD was on the fantastic rise in this time as well, with Athlons being much more efficient, more perormant and cheaper at the same time, as well as leading technology with AMD64 architecture that basically every x86 CPU is running on these days 😉
@jims_junk Жыл бұрын
Man I remember those days. The sides were so divided, yet it was obvious that AMD was superior. Once intel came out with the Core lineup, that was when the playing field evened out. I still remember having a dual P3 that matched and in some ways was faster than a Pentium 4 HT that I had at the time. When I showed my co-workers and friends they were amazed. You're right, netburst was REALLY that bad.

Good video. Now maybe compare a Celeron E-1200 to the Pentium D. Perhaps overclock the Celeron to 1.7ghz from it's stock 1.6ghz just to see what it can do against the Pentium D at half it's clock speed.

do you have any nehalem chips? would be cool to see some comparisons between them and core/phenom (and phenom ii i guess if you've got those).

Actually I was just thinking the same thing. I remember my first i5 SUCKED. Not sure if it was the board or cpu but I wasn't impressed. My overclocked Core2Quad beat it hands down. Was thinking of going back to that to see what the deal was and if they are any better than a Quad. I could definitely also do a video marking it against a phenom II. Would also like to look into FX processors. Never had a chance to mess with them but all I hear is how bad they were, I want to see for myself. So many people complained about the original Phenoms but I thought they were GREAT value for the money for their time.

Also If I could get this channel monetized, I could put those earnings back into the channel. Just need a couple hundred more subs. Sounds strange but its fun playing with all these older things that I could hardly afford at the time.

Pentium Dual Core was a great budget CPU for he time and the fact it could overclock 1Ghz past its default 2.5GHz clock made it a good CPU for people who wanted to save a buck but get impressive results with a pretty easy overclock
@jims_junk Жыл бұрын
I never really used em too much back in the day. I was always so busy at my job that I didn't really have a chance to research or even keep up on newer technology. The district I was stationed at had nothing but Pentium 4's and D's. We were replacing them so I had my assistant order a handful of budget desktops that WEREN'T netburst. He ordered a bunch of 'dual core' HP's. At first my heart stopped cuz I thought he ordered 4 dozen D's. I had to stop what I was doing to look up the cpu that was installed before I strangled him. Didn't I feel like a dope to find out it was just s slimmed down Duo, but was shocked at how well they performed.

Even without an OC, the Pentium Dual Core used more power while idling than AMD's direct value competition used under heavy load...and could barely beat AMD's budget single cores. The OC potential was pretty impressive though.

If netburst was around today the Pentium T (Tuple), behold 12 p4 cores TDP 1000w (non boosted) PSU's required plural. Liquid nitrogen not included in box. Screw your efficiency core, 12 inefficiency cores FTW. Intel inside, until it blows and its outside.

Without all the b******* the Pentium D is obviously more powerful. That's why it requires more power no different than when working out. The more you put into your workouts the more carbohydrates you need for fuel😅
@whynot9884 Жыл бұрын
mmmm no. Thats why netburst was canceled. It needed to run at farrr higher clock speeds to perform the same as non netburst cpu's of its time. Just because something uses a lot of power, doesn't mean its always better. There is a thing known as efficiency.
