Hey Guys. In today’s video I give some of the common things that go wrong with a International Harvester 66 and 86 Series Tractor.

Thank you for explaining the correct use of a ta. I worked on these tractors when they were new and if the salesman didn't explain how to use the ta, it wasn't long and that tractor would be in the shop with the sprag clutch out. Good correct information.

Great video!!! We have a 1977 IH 1086 we farm with in Wisconsin. Dad bought it slightly used (it was a canning factory tractor). It was our BIG tractor until he got a C-IH 7220. we still use it for our spring and fall field work. It's always a reliable tractor for us. (This my tractor I drive for field work).

Nice video. We ran a bunch of the bigger 66 series- 1066, 1466, 1468, 4166 and a few of the 86 series in that HP range. The T/As were troublesome on the higher HP tractors for sure. Everybody had suggestions on how you should use them to prevent them failing, none of which made any difference. We used the T/A sparingly, only in the field to get through tough spots. Still they failed eventually. Best advice seemed to be pretend it isn't there as much as possible because the Sprag clutch would eventually wear enough that all of the rollers flipped over and it wouldn't work. Never had T/A problems with the smaller tractors. The IH 6 cylinder engines were wonderful. The 550 V8... to be honest, not so great. Fun (chrome pipes and all) and sounded really cool, plus that tractor would crank down the road at over 30 mph, which was useful. Put a smile on your face until it went bang Lol.

My grandpa had a 986. I enjoyed being around it when I was a kid and I ran it some. Only problem I remember him having was the hydraulic pump going out and it was kinda a pain to shift. Otherwise it was a neat old tractor. But I loved his old ford 7710.

I've had my 1086 for nearly and decade and LOVE IT. The Dt414 is practically bullet proof and it has far more torque than I need. I just replaced the starter this weekend. The biggest issue is the weight. That thing feels like it weighs a million pounds LOL. The next fix on mine is steering hand pump is leaking at the top. Fun, fun, fun

Great video! The 66 & 86 Series tractors our now becoming "practical classics", that is sort after by farmers and collectors alike. The redesigned cabin on the 86 Series was advertised as the " Pro-Ag" style tractor. The 666 & 686 didn't have this feature.

One of the most reliable and dependable engines ever created in my opinion!! Perkins rite alongside it. The 1566 I used to run was like you said. Just a great tractor. Never an issue.

We had customers that would have the newest in tractor technology, but they just couldn’t get rid of the 1066 or 1086 they had. Usually they were paid for and would do what had to be done.

Thanks for the info. The 400 series engine the best IH engine ever made I think. I like the 66 series but I needed a cab tractor and the 86 series have better cabs that’s why I got a 1086. Looking forward to part 2.

Yea the 66 series cabs are pretty crude. The 86 series was the first Tractor designed for a cab

I love all my 66 series, I have a 666, 966, 2-1066s, and a 1466. Great to work on, I bought 3 of them as fixer upers. Another common problem I've had is the steering control valve leaking, that's not that easy to fix. I made splitting stands on caster wheels, it takes me about 40 hours for a complete transmission tear down and rebuild including clutch and crank seal. But I take my time and try to do a real good job.

Yea. If you compare these to what new ones cost, you can buy a shed full! I would rather have 5-6 of these than 1 brand new tractor.

We had a 856 IH, we put a turbo set-up on it and pulled a 5 bottom plow with no problem , we farmed with it for about 6yrs then traded it in on a 1466 Turbo with cab and farmed with it for over 20yrs , best tractor we ever had. We farmed with J.D. 720 with a pony motor , 1800 & a 1900 Oliver deisel and a 77 Oliver Row Crop that we used for haying and a J.D. 4400 Combine that we bought at a farm sale , the motor had caught on fire , we built a motor with turbo and replaced alot of the electrical wiring...!!! All of these tractors we had gone thru and rebuilt the motors and clutches before they went to the fields to work...!!! After dad retired from farming these tractor got top dollar because we stayed on top of things and fixed what ever was brokeor needed repaired....!!! I guess what i'm saying is the IH was the work horse on the farm....!!! We bleed RED....!!!

My Dad bought a 966 in 75. We farmed 1000 acres for 10 years, and dad finally converted to hay operations over row crops. Biggest issue is he sold off all the implementation. Dads gone now and Red is mine. I'm needing a disc, I just rebuilt the plow. Have to keep it locked as people come around trying to buy the " piece of junk" from my mom. Runs as good now as when I first got to drive

I have to agree that those engines were bulletproof! Had a 1086 and it must have been running around 150+ hp! I had mine for 12 years with absolutely no problems and I'm generally a Deere man! A little crude of a tractor but, it made cheap power for me!

International was very smart to partner with Neuss back in the 50’s I believe and by the 70’s most of internationals engines were coming out of Germany…they built them right up until the mid 90’s until they just couldn’t meet emissions…excellent engines and if they were very well maintained, they would outrun any engine on the market of their day and burn less fuel doing it!..they also built them with rebuild in mind saving the farmer a great deal of money!

Interesting. As an Australian farmer I have 2 Neuss powered trucks and a tractor. Yes they are more expensive to repair than the very much common Perkins 6-354. But here farmers prefer the Perkins,(plastic Perkins we diesel mechanics call them) Personally I'll take a Neuss over a Perkins any day.

Yea they are all weather engines. I like cummins too but the biggest drawback with cummins is no sleeves. You have to watch you don’t overheat them.

I grew up green. Are neighbor had 2 1066's one with a Year Around Cab and the other with a IH that was all red. My dad always referred to it as "the one with the sleeper on it" because of how large it was.

we had 1066 and 656 great tractors our 656 had over 7000 hours with no engine work and only replace the clutch once but the TA if pulled would put the tractor in free wheel if going down hill while balling so you had to apply a little brake

I'm looking at buying a 986 but it has a loud hyd grinding type noise. Gets louder when your turn the steering wheel. Fluid is aerated and mid way up the add mark. What would you recommend top fluid change filter?

I have a 766 with 6000 hrs that my grandfather brought new. Crank shaft cracked in half on it and had a hard time finding one. It has the D360 in it and not a lot of them used . Ended up finding one and had about 25 hours into repaired by myself. It's definitely a good tractor but I still love my Deeres better.

Yea the 360 wasn’t bad, I always preferred the 414, 436, 466 engines. I have so little experience with JD. I have driven many but as far as working on them, wouldn’t know anything about them

Nice! You should be using filters that don't let oil drain back into the engine. 400 series IH engines were the best engine for their time from what I know, Cat C12 came out and apparently that took over as being the best. I wish the DT466 Could have gone in pickup trucks, such as Ford F350 and up, would be so overpowered though! Edit: Can you do a video on the difference from 766 to the 1566, I don't seem to see too many differences, maybe its me, no idea!

Haha, you still have bolts to hold your floor in.... We are down to four in ours.Dad always said to pull the TA back only under load, so when baling, use the breaks to create drag. We got almost ten thousand hours on our injection pump until the low sulfur fuel got it. You forget to say for the TA to check the lever. Ours had frozen in place until I finally took it apart and oiled it last year. I would take an 86 over a 66 any day of the week.

When I first got it home, it had 2 bolts in the floor, one on each corner, I had cleaned out all the threads and had to tap a few and got them all in. Then I had ordered a floor mat to put in. Was surprised All States had them for $59.

I used a left over section of truck bed mat we had. I just had to use a good box cutter and a little patience to make it fit.

I learned on a gas Super MTA pulling a disc, the TA worked but we never used it. Of course I was a kid so I did pull it a few times just so see what happened. It may have been used some with the corn picker, not sure I was the official wagon hooker for that. Don't remember but I think it would coast down hill. Do remember it was fast on the road.

hey we have a 1086 that had really bad brakes and also had trouble pulling its self. for example driving down road with even a slight incline it looses speed more then it should. do you have any advice on what i should try or how i could test it to know if it is my ta or if it is my cluch

One issue I’ve had with my 986 that you didn’t mention is busted cab mounts and how to replace them. Busted cab mounts affect shifting linkages, hydraulic clutch assist linkage etc.

The reason I think why the 986 will last is it’s a large engine and low HP. You figure 436 ci and a factory rating of 105 hp. You can’t really over work it

PA Farms your right iv used a ford 9600 and they have a 401 and put out 135 with a factory turbo and they'll last about 7000 hours before needing to be overhauled

Joey Probably a better comparison in the Ford would be an 8600, it used the same size engine as a 9600 but was 105hp naturally aspirated. I don't have first hand experience with high hour with them though.

Lube light should go off just before movement. Otherwise clutch engages before TA and you will bring the front end off the ground. No 986 turbo unless somebody got creative

I worked on those miserable T/As at a Case IH dealer. The T/A unit was small for a tractor of that size. Allis-Chalmers Power Director was a much better design. I worked for both brands in my time as a mechanic. A/C engines left a lot to be desired. The bull gear in the rear ends on 66 & 86 tractors had plenty of problems also. A/C also had a 6 speed power shift at the time IH did not. So in conclusion put a IH engine in front of a A/C tractor drive train you would have a great tractor.

older iron isn't complicated, just misunderstood, that is the case every time. I've heard of the TA goosing, or, hands using it as a motor brake of sorts, it has led to some pretty bad road accidents. Humans will never stop trying to find ways to get hurt. All I know is those models, get the bugs worked out, give'em more boost from turbo, match that with air and fuel, not talking about drag strip specs, but, I seen one on my road now pulling around a 20' ripper, with ease......... Keep the old iron around, they had soul.

You're talking about the torque amplifier I remember my old man had a 756 and 826 a 966 a 1086 and a1466 I remember they always ran the tractor with the torque amplifier in Lo and when they got on flat ground or out on the road then he would kick it in high I never remember any issues he never pulled it into low until it was about stopped matter fact they ran low almost all the time other than when they hit the road but just kick it into high like a highway gear I guess he had a different take on it

The engineers built them as he described, to pull through hard stuff. If it works for you, I can't say not to. They really could have built it much better and more reliable like a brake band and planetary gear or a torque converter that is normally locked. "Fluid Drive" worked for a 80,000 lb tank.... Why not a tractor that weighs less that 1/4?

Why not save the clutch? I don't want to seperate the engine and trans any more than I have to. As long as you don't grind, your fine usually

Where would a person start, filters and fluid, but after that? You mentioned the MCV valve and a drive gear behind it. What's the possiblity of the pump actually being the problem?

IV got a 3588 Snoopy sitting out in the weather rotting away because IV snapped the shaft of the internal hydraulic pump, I had a mechanical look at it and he said I can put a new pump in but it'll snap again as something is amiss in alignment or something. I'm having a real battle finding a hydraulic pump anyway as in Australia here the 88's weren't very common, the Snoopy version anyway. Very confused as to what to do with it. It's always had crook 3 point linkage to so I think it's going to have to be split. It's TA is stuffed to but I never really needed. IV got a 756 as well and I can't get it out of gear so left it under a tree and walked away lol. Think she's right out of fluids. She's a work horse, it was left in scrub country a few years ago and it flooded, I forgot about it for about 6 month's. Once the water had dropped enough I got out to it and the water mark and lot's of timber debris was under the top step so she had a good bath... Totally agree with the engine being unkillable and very strong. I had a 5150 FWA case maxum 125hp pulling my 2-11 scarifier andhad an issue I can't remember but I had to swap tractor's and put the 756 100hp 2wd on in its place and not only was it pulling easier but faster and running cooler.... IV 4 old 5-11 combines 24r I use a tandem hitch to pull 2 at once, 1st high on the 756 could of used 2nd high. Just love's being challenged! Edit" the TA is stuffed on the 756 to and is addicted to aerostart, I am going to try and upload some old video's of the 756 working in mud up to her ass, Dad is operating it about 10 year's ago and boy did he teach me a thing or to about turning brakes and walking threw the impossible!

I have to agree the 986 very bullet proof ,I've had mine for about 18 yrs.,,think clutch and two sets of tires was about it.They are a very reliable machine ,gear shifting ,prob. The biggest down side ,but very nice cab and mine has air ,but it doesn't work.

I liked your videos. Am I the only one who's noticed that "turbo" is on the side of the hood? If memory serves the 986 has a 436 ci without a turbo and the 1086 has a 414 ci with turbo. We've had 1066, 1086, 886, 3588 and as in one of your videos the starter is a nightmare to replace but I was lucky and only had to do that once in the 1086. I agree that they are very good engines and could have just as well been used in the 71 series magnums. And yes the shifting took some getting used to. JD and Case had IH beat in user friendly shifting. I never liked how the TA worked in the 86 series. There was too much internal mechanism which made it more difficult to use verses the 66 series. I'm mostly green now but still have the old Farmall 350 gas (looking for a diesel twin to that one) and a 1964 706D that my dad bought new. I restored it a few years ago. Oh one more thing that was just awesome in the 66 and 86 tractors is the hydraulic boost for the clutch. Made it much easier to use. Baffles me JD hasn't used that.

Yea you are right on the 986 not being factory turbocharged. The previous owner had installed a turbo kit you can get for them. Now the engine is the same configuration as the 1486. When I repainted the hoods I added the decals.

Yes. It will still work in both high and low range through all the gears.

Had a 1066 black stripe. I would get up to speed in 4 hi on the road with ta on..... Then throw the ta off for that extra "speed boost". Maybe my father shouldn't have given me this tractor way back when i was 14 😂

My 1086 runs great, but it shifts like a nightmare if you don't know it well, and will also get "crossed-up" between gears without much provocation. That's why there were no bolts on the floorboard when I bought it. Also rides like a brick. And the T/A....don't even get me started. What a labor intensive poor design. Mine's been into 3 times (yeah heavy duty cable and all) and now it's stuck/frozen on the high side (fortunately). Again, it runs great, but steering slack closely resembles a loaded pulpwood truck compared to Ford & JD models of the same era.

Hey man. I have to use ether on my 1086 to start it every time. Hot or cold. Just bought it. Just a little squirt and it’ll fire right up. I read it could be a fuel issue, low compression, and a couple other things. Whats your take on it?

Haha it does look like that from behind the wheel, basically if you look at the seat location, 86 Series is front a few feet. There is a video on here about the 86 series. Was an advertising film from the 70s that they explain the change.

I have a question for you red guys... In the 706 tractors why did IH go from using their own D282 diesel engine to a German built D310 diesel engine? Who manufactured those 310 motors?

D282s were a pain in the a- - when got below 0 ! If you weren’t going use it for a hr. you let it run or park it where you could plug it in. Never had problems with our 310 (756)

The 310,s were German built,, and a lot better for a 706,, and a few more, the 282,s were more of a 560 engine, the 706,s I thought were to heavy for that 282,,,

The shift on the 86 series was a joke on the left hand side and when they get worn out get stuck in 2 gears. Ive ran a 10, 14, and 1586, do not like these tractors cause of that reasons alone and because of that they are no good for a loader tractor. Engines were tough yes but IHs big improvements came out on the 88 series. Got rid of the TA, put more gears in them and better spacing of the gears, the older IHs had to much gap between 2nd and 3rd gear. 18 speeds was much more improved. Id move up and buy a 5088 over a 1086 any day.

I have never driven a us IH just the german ones, so what if you use the clutch and put then the TA in (in roadgear) then it should not show any sign of wear

You didn't say anything about the lights wiring and light switch an fuse panel I have both series and a 06 an 56 series an to keep the lights going has been a pain.

Got a 1066 that when you first start it up about half of the time the clutch doesn't press in rigjt and it has no steering. Sometimes it's for 30 seconds sometimes I'll get aggervated and come back to it and it will start and work fine or do it again until it decides to start working. Does anyone know what this is

Sounds like the pump is going bad.

@@PAFarms when it does this the brakes got pressure on the pedal, the lift and remotes work fine though. It could still be the pump I jus dont understand how everything works fine

My neighbors is like that, it takes a while till it warms up to get pressure. Usually it’s the front pump on the MCV valve that gives trouble.

Try over filling the hydraulic fluid by 5 gallons. It could be an o-ring on the suction pipe and over filling will keep that spot submerged. It won't hurt anything.

Hello from Australia. I run a 1586 and 4586 on our farm ,but my late fathers 766 has a hydraulic problem. I dont want to abandon her just yet. She is an Aussie built '72 model dad bought new with 5966 hours. The hydraulics are a pause run pause run pause run affair. Motor runs fine. It affects 2 systems, steering and remote hydraulics. Torque ampifier is not affected, still original. I'm strict on servicing and use Hy-trans. Could you give me help, I would be grateful.

Sorry for the long delay, sounds like it could be a few things, one thing that comes to mind would be the MCV pump. The drive gear on the pump has a small keyway, sometimes the key shears and the gear can’t drive properly when hydraulics are under load. There is a nut that holds it on the shaft that comes loose as well.

No, the TA is a different design in the bigger models. If they are working, it should hold you back. The other TAs weren’t designed to hold back

Yea they make a ta delete kit you can install. Also they had some models that came factory without a ta.

No offense to anyone but I've had a few IHC's, and their a pretty good tractor with a real good engine and an absolute junk transmission. I've never seen one that didn't develop TA issues, and they just kept doubling down and putting them in. They were problematic from the MTA's until it was too late...

Bosch pumps are top of the line? Robert Bosch was the American (ambac) pump was a horrible pump

The American Bosch pump was much more sensitive to loads coming on it. That is why the 8000 Series AC went to them. The Robert Bosch pump and 1 punger and deliver valve per cylinder and ran at 1/2 of engine speed. The American Bosch had 1 punger and delivery valve for the whole pump and ran at full engine speed. It cost 1/2 and much to over haul the pump as the Robert Bosch but the Robert Bosch ran twice as long. Cost per hour was the same.

@@countrygent4 actually that's wrong. Ambac pumps were only responsive at high RPM, they cost the same to go through if done properly and still don't work. 8000 series Allis Chalmers are being switched over to Robert Bosch for just that reason

@@countrygent4 I can't tell if you're defending them, but most A-C guys really dislike the AMBAC pump. Some guys have switched their 8000 series over to the Rossamaster pump found on the 7000 series.
