Today I’m changing the hydraulic oil filter on an IH 986. This is the step by step to change the filter. This will also apply to all International tractors from the 706-1586

this is the only video I could find showing the dipstick and the fill port for the hydraulic system on an international harvester tractor. A good find, but very disturbing not to find this info elsewhere.

Toyota like that keep it simple they make the same part for a lot of vehicles.

Is this similar in a 686? My 3 pt lift is being sluggish want to start with this, also as a fellow PA hobby farmer I appreciate your videos they're great

Pro Tip: Go to the scrapyard and find a refrigerator shelf (small one), build a square wooden frame from 1x1, use fence staples to attach shelf to frame. Put it over top of your bucket. Now ya don't have to hold things til they stop dripping when ya change filters.

That’s a great idea.

OK thanks. I don't run that 886 to often but l thought that light was on more often but lseem to think it was when the clutch was depressed..the coolant is the one that was on a lot .l think it is a defective sending sensor. Thanks for the info.
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
It should go out just as the tractor begins to move as you release the clutch. If it doesn’t you can adjust the rod on the mvc. It’s that small 1/4 in rod that hooks to the valve on the right. Either lengthen or shorten depending on when the light goes out.

You don't need to drain hydraulic fluid first?

Here is the Hyd fluid drain plug on my 986. There are 3 plugs, one on each side and one larger one above draw bar

Are those cartridges cheaper than the spin on filters? Finally some sunshine!
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
I think the cartridge was about $11

What is the part number for the hydraulic coupler adapters you have?
@PAFarms2 жыл бұрын
Not sure on the number, I think you can get them at tractor supply in the hydraulic section

How often do you change your hydraulic oil?
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Every year, not sure of the hours, usually do it with the engine oil change, the filter was only $11 I think
@jth0309666 жыл бұрын
What hydraulic fluid do you run in your 685 can you run 80w90 gear oil
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
I think Case ih recommends HyTran fluid or something similar. It’s expensive stuff so I will usually try to find a cheaper version that is still compatible. I would say 80-90 is too thick, the transmission takes hydraulic oil.

Do you have to drain the hydraulic fluid to change your filter?
@PAFarms3 жыл бұрын
No, it stays in the tractor and you can change the filter, some will come out when you open the side but not much
@KlineDeere2 жыл бұрын
Not in my 1066 that thing drains like hell you have to be fast not to loose it all maybe somethings wrong
@mikes59224 жыл бұрын
Do you know if on a 1066 if the hydraulics vent out the dipstick or is there a vent somewhere
@PAFarms4 жыл бұрын
Should vent from the dipstick.

I changed the hydraulic oil and my clutch goes completely to the floor now is there any bleeding I can do or just let it run until the air goes out?
@PAFarms5 жыл бұрын
I would let it run and work the steering and other hydraulics. Usually it clears up
@powerram925 жыл бұрын
@@PAFarms ok if it doesn't what should be my next action. I had pressure before I changed it I only let it ran how a couple minutes then I had to leave but I'll try it again lol

it hasnt clear up the transmission brake still isnt working. i tried adjusting it still nothing but the clutch works fine. any suggestions?
@orkhancombe56 жыл бұрын
Do you keep your excess oil?
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Not too much. I keep enough to spray on equipment to prevent rust. Any extra goes to by buddy’s garage to burn for heat.

Changed our 986 hyd filter yesterday. We put a new t/a in it two weeks ago and ran it for a bit b4 changing the filter. What are your thoughts on the IH 656? I have an opportunity to buy one. Thanks for the video.
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
Great idea to let the filter in for a while. 656 is pretty good depending on what you are doing with it. I think I would try for a 706 because the rear is bigger. Also a 686 would have a more modern engine with better fuel injectors. I always looked at the 656 as being very similar to the 560. But if it’s a good price, I would go for it
@williamchambers72356 жыл бұрын
PA Farms awesome! Thanks for your input.
@Raise9866 жыл бұрын
We have a 1970 656 and it has been a great tractor. We have it on the loader so the wear and tear on it has been exponentially more than if it had no loader. At about 14000 hours we replaced the original d282 that had been overhauled once with a d301 from a 715 combine. A 656 starts really hard but once its running it won't ever die. Watch out for head gaskets though, they only have 14 head bolts.

@@PAFarms ,,,, on my recently acquired 656 Hydro, gasoline,($3,500), that the hydraulic/"transmission" oil filter is completely different?

Looks like same filter on 826,only you have to take filterscreen and all 8 bolts out,notice that inside you have a filter guide that can be taken out for cleaning.Video didnt mention,maybe dont know,I also clean bottom og housing for dirty oil.Stay safe.

What is the reason for the dump light?
@PAFarms6 жыл бұрын
It’s connected to the dump valve in the mcv valve, when you push in the clutch it should come on to let you know the oil is going a different direction. Basically like a bypass valve
