I had a "72" Scout II with a 318 engine. I would go "woods bombing" thru the quarry roads of Cape Ann. The original seats didn't have head rests. All four shock brackets at the leaf springs busted on mine. They had a weak electrical system, it seemed I had to replace the coil every winter. It was a work horse during the Great Blizzard of 78 pulling out stuck cars! And when my dad couldn't get beer delivered to his liquor store I made runs to the distributor filling the Scout with over 100 cases of beer inside and strapped to the roof! The day I traded it in the rear end seized up as I pulled into the dealer parking lot! Oh..... I was driving thru Peabody, Ma in the pouring rain when the main U-joint failed. This Scout had an auto tranny and I replaced the U-joint from the drivers seat! I removed 4 screws holding the shift cover and the U- Joint was directly under it. Luckily there was an auto parts store down the street and had one in stock and he allowed me to borrow a hammer, screwdriver and needle nose pliers to install it! I never had to crawl on the wet ground!

Paul. We got a Scout down a single track road in nowhere. Leaf spring shackle busted so Scout could only turn right right a few inches. We had a tiny little place to turn around. Nothin' doing except fall in the river. We walked 11 miles in 45F weather back to town.

Hey, I just bought one of these back in the spring. She needs lots of love. But its a 345 V8 4 speed with 3.73 gears. going to take a few years to get her on the road again but should be slowly fun doing it. It has a rotted out frame so I have a spare sitting here that needs only a little bit of work.

Great vehicle and must be fairly rare. I have never seen a super scout. I do remember the old scouts would go places a bronco or blazer dare not tread. Reminds me of a early LR discovery. You have a pearl there, I was happy to see the frame in that kind of condition, I know you guy's in new England deal big time with rust issues. Keep us posted on the progress.

A mate of mine had a red one in the late 70's...The engine did look like 1/2 a small block.

ZIGgassedUP Thats exactly what they are, the 196 is half of a 392 V8. But the 4 cylinder weighs almost as much as a small block Chevy, somewhere around 550 pounds. The V8s are damn near 800 pounds. IH called this engine series SV, for small V8, but they’re bigger than most of the other company’s big blocks were at the time.

I love Scouts. My dad worked at IH (Fort Wayne) and I did later but in 1977 we went to the Scout line and watched his Scout get built. Awesome vehicle till I rolled it on a very ICY Good Friday...it was definitely in the cabbage sorry to say.

very nice. I wasn't aware that IH had a 4 cylinder which looks like a chapped down the middle V8. My uncle had an IH pickup back in the 80's which was 345 powered. My sons buddy has a Scout that is 345 powered ( 2bbl ) . The 392 ( i think is the displacement ) is usually 4bbl Quadrajet , better flowing heads. but these engines like their big brother like the 404 ( like we had in our 3 ton grain trucks from the 79-80 time period are torque monsters. red line on the 404's is 3600 rpm. but back to the 345: guys like to acquire the 4bbl intake that was used on the 392 which is now are as hens teeth and when you do find them they are pricey.. but a 392 top end will really wake up the 345. We ordered the hottest cam we dared considering the limitations of a relatively stock 345 .. That engine sill soon be torn down and rebuilt. The IH is an interesting alternative platform vehicle to be sure. ps. thanks for the recent acceptance to your FB page.

That would be a Scout SS. I still have a set of those door inserts and the special grill. I also have a set of the chrome Rallye wheels. Yes the four cylinders were actually half a V8. I believe that would have been a 196 which was half of a 392. That same V8 engine was available in three displacements, 304, 345, and 392. Super Scout Specialists carries the repro body parts. In fact you can get a full fiberglass body. Yes, you could probably pull a house down with one, in fact I did pull down a concrete block garage with my old Scout 800 many years ago!

I believe all ss where v8 equipment with fiberglass door cut outs, fender flares, and a unique grill and tailgate insert. The 4 cylinder is internationals v8 cut in half because it was cheaper to cut one in half vs designing a new engine. Thanks for the video.

Does the glove box door have a keyed lock? Is the vin tab on the passenger side panel UPSIDE DOWN? Tilt Column? (no) Dash have covers over the slots? THOSE are SSII tells, yours is likely a fake.

My brother had a scout with the 345. It was a VERY capable 4x4. Back in the 80s even, almost every scout had the same rust patches on the body.

Just so you know, that is not an SS2 scout. Someone added the grill and door inserts. The SS2 from the factory had a 345 v-8, it also was an automatic not a manual transmission, it had fender flares and a tail gate insert that matched the grill. What you have there is just an old scout 2. Still a great truck, but not the SS2

Minor: You might want to verify that it's a SS. They were a high-end package - I'm not sure that they came with the 196 (which is half of a 392, it even has a 392 head - basically indestructible but powerless) Major: The body's shot. Any patch panel that you weld in will fall off by itself after a while no matter how much you prep the area and weld to virgin metal. The old joke about Scouts rusting on the assembly line turned out not to be a joke. Scout frames and engines always look like they were built a week ago - don't use that as a signpost. The body is completely gone. I went to a fiberglass tub years ago - beautiful, but very expensive and frustrating. Only four of the rivnuts were installed correctly. If you decide to go ahead, I can help with some data and pictures. Otherwise, enjoy it, beat the balls off it, and scrap it.
@justinstearns97237 жыл бұрын
The Scout 4 cylinders are indeed half V8s. The original Scout 80 used a 152ci version, which was half of a 304 V8. The later 196ci like this has is half of a 392 V8. They made them this way in order to keep tooling costs down and have as many parts interchangeable as possible.

Great, International's were quite popular back in the late 60's & 70's. My dad had a work vehicle that was a Travelall, much like a Chevy Suburban. The police even had a dual purpose Travelall, outfit to be both an ambulance and patrol car To bad International gave up on building these rugged vehicles. The Bronco sure was trying to grab the Scout's luster, of course Willy's was in that camp for some time

And, actually.... 4 banger had better weight distribution .... about the same mpg as the V8 tho

If I had that Scout and had the means to fix it, I'd just buy a brand new tube. It would probably be cheaper in the long run than trying to fix all of the cancer in the body.

you know literally the Only reason I even know what this is, is that a video game had an expansion pack where this car, the harvester scout, the first one was a barn find vehicle in it, and that's it. also i gotta ask given your love of the sonnet have you ever looked into a classic opel GT at any point?
@gosportjamie7 жыл бұрын
Nice vehicle. It's rather an American version of an 88' Land-Rover, 4-cylinder engine, leaf springs, live axles the lot. A bit more refined and comfortable than a Jeep but still very capable off road. I hope this one gets the love and care it deserves...
