I missed does this require immunocopromised?
@ihmcurious5 ай бұрын
It wasn't mentioned in the paper. The cells are added at such an early stage that there is no immune system to reject them. As it develops, the immune system should adapt to the presence of the donor cells and learn to recognize them as "self" and not a threat.
@thecoolguy34985 ай бұрын
@@ihmcuriouswoah. Would that translate to humans too? If you introduce foreign DNA early enough on in life, does the immune system usually recognize that tissue a self? Thanks!
@watsonwrote5 ай бұрын
@@thecoolguy3498 Yes, genetic chimeras exist. XX people already have a degree of chimerism, but some people fully integrate with a non-identical twin in-utero and thus have a mosaic of different genetic identities across their body, and they have no self-immune issues. There's even a case of a woman who was thought not to be the genetic the parent of the children she birthed because she was a chimera and her ovaries had a different genetic profile than the tissue that was sampled for genetic testing. This presented a legal issue that was resolved when they discovered her chimerism. My understanding is that we've even been able to have a human child born without a working thymus to accept a donor heart without immunosuppressents at a very young age because the surgeons also transferred the thymus. This trained their body's immune system to accept both host and donor tissue. If this can happen post-utero it can happen before then.
@napalmholocaust90935 ай бұрын
Interesting this can overcome the innate genetic library of acceptable proteins/cells. I figured it was early since blastocyst implantation is essentially the work of a retrovirus and genetic compatability outside of a someone gestating it's own clone is not a thing.

Reminds me on a case here, germany. An old woman got an implant of calf tissue as transplanted organ. Because the choice was that or death and documentation was tight, since it was during WW2 She survived her son (saddly) and no doctor believes her I assume bodys can tolerate way more new cells than we know. Specially females, since their immune system is already optimised to survive pregnancy. And a lot becone mirco chimeras during that time.

Interesting. I wonder what cause the conversation of the donor cells back to mouse cells. Chemical signals, environment, the body's immune system? So fascinating.
@TheRABIDdude5 ай бұрын
Assuming you meant "conversion" rather than "conversation". The rat cells didn't convert back to mouse cells. Rather, new mouse cells were moving into the forebrain so the ratio of rat cells in that area decreased over time. Potentially also some of the rat cells were dying, which makes sense since they weren't designed to be in that environment.
