i don't like calling modules Magic, cause they put too much work into making them as smooth and playable as they are, but the NE voice modules are something else. They really come alive with modulation and it seems the more inputs you're moving, the more it wants! great video and great jam!

I tried last night to pull off what you did with this with my setup. Essentially I’ve got cv coming out of mpcone, filters as an insert provided by the mpc and distortion. Then I ran into problems…. Cv was on different tracks so was a pain to randomise. And no swing (stoicheia was providing my steppy substitute). I’ve been wondering about which modules are next for essentials. I’ve wanted the steppy / mimetic combo since I started. Your video has now nailed it. Thank you!
@IhorMedia
@IhorMedia 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! No swing is fine, to be honest. The swing idea just came to me while filming the video. In my setup here Mimetic is essential. Tho steppy can be replaced by any step / triggers. Maybe even MPC sending sequence into modular!
@illustrationmaking
@illustrationmaking 3 жыл бұрын
@@IhorMedia it was the mpc sending the sequence. Just got complex with all the tracks. However…. Came up with a workable solution! I too the cv from just one sequence an multimedia to 4, which I then out through the intellijel 4 attenuators mixer thing. Badoom! I also found there is a swing hiding underneath the quantize function. I really need to start making vids. Thanks so much for all you do. great work. Still going to get a mimetic though :D

Add a 4 to the floor from the dfam and then my hand are free to explore the more melodic amd textural voices :) But on its own, man! That BIA is a power house! One voice techno track for sure (be it a bit minimal industrial techno). Add a Turing machine and quantizer on pitch for the bass line and off you go?

- First, - superb video, great explanations and presentation. Thank You. - Now... I'm not trying to upset anyone by my next comment, least of all Ihor, of whom I have the utmost respect, but, - I would want more from a Eurorack system that costs over £2000 british pounds to put together. I have nothing against Eurorack, I've been buying Doepfer since 1997, - and I've added a few modules from other brands over the years, - but we're talking Pulsar-23 or even Erica Synths Perkons money here. I understand the fascination with creating ones own systems, and the other possibilities available when different modules are added, I also understand that we all have different tastes when we start to evaluate the usefulness of various audio textures - but personally, I feel time and time again that, - 1.) These newer digital modules lack their own character, - like most of these textures are possible with a modified Speak and Spell and an old Emu ESI4000, - and 2.) The shear cost of each module, - and yes I understand these companies aren't massive, but they're established, they have a market, - it feels like many of these brands are taking the P. Let us not forget, ALL the best music of the past 70 years was created by poor musicians, using only what was available to them at that time, - Rhythm and Blues, Ska, Reggae, Dub, Psychedelia, Punk, Detroit Techno, Acid, Breakbeat, etc, all instigated by working class musicians and pioneers... Again, I'm not attacking anyone, just making a few observations, as a retired old man who's seen a lot of counter cultures come and go. - love to ALL, feel no hate

I have no hands-on experience with modular (yet), but I was wondering what more one could expect from a compact setup like this? It sounds great and unique to me! Genuinely curious if you'd have recommendations to get this kind of sound with cheaper modules/synths :)
@IhorMedia
@IhorMedia 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man! No hate taken whatsoever. Thanks for your kind words regarding my content quality. I appreciate it. Also it is always interesting to get a different opinion on the stuff. I appreciate it. So I want to share my reflection on your comment. First of all I am kinda a baby producer & software engineer. So take my words through this filter. When I really started taking music production seriously it was already 21st century and all has gone digital more and more. I've learned how was techno created and I admire those artists from 80-90th that made this whole thing happen. And they made amazing music. My biggest learning from that era was simple as one word: LIMITATIONS. Simple and obvious. But this is where digital world sucks a lot! It is simply limitless. You can patch 1000 oscillators into 10000 filters if you want. Does this really help you to create music? I doubt it. Tho when it comes to the digital modules (like Noise Engineering once) they are limited. Guys put a lot of thought and engineering into this. And they are limited in a good way. For me this is such good balance in between hardware limitations and digital limitlessness. And what I am trying to do with this is to find "yet another way" to utilise it for my creations. And at the end what matters is how it sounds and lays down into a track. Which is subjective. Rest is secondary. Unless you are stilling somebody else work. Thank you! Love and peace!

At first I thought I click on another Ricky Tinez video but didnt expect this lol. Fuck yes, I need to do this. good thing is that I have BI, now I just need those attenuators, use CV Trinity for modulation and figure out how to sample&hold it and the result should be somewhat similar, right?
@IhorMedia
@IhorMedia 3 жыл бұрын
Haha! Ricky inspires me a lot, as you can see. You are right, this concept is based on sample and hold idea. I don't really know CV Trinity, but as long as you can s&h some CV value with every trig you are fine. Attenuators are nice to have to tweak the sound a little more carefully. But not having them shouldn't stop you! Try without attenuators and I bet you will enjoy it.

The QA is sort of a VCA / Mixer / Attenuator hybrid to process signals. The LO can also process signals but can be used as a standalone voltage generator / offset without patching any inputs. The QA has the nice "attenuate" feature in which positive voltages will duck signals instead of boosting (very handy for sidechaining or reverse envelopes) LO is more of a hands-on module for manual control over various signals from one location... whereas QA only works with signals you feed it. Both are fucking awesome. Hope that helps.

Have to disagree [respectfully] with your statement about this being the "right way" to use Basimilus Iteritas Alter. It is merely ONE of MANY ways to utilise this Sound-Monster. In all honesty, you could have used any Module that has distortion with one-third of the inputs and knobs that BIA has. That Module is full of such an assortment of Melodies, Drums, Noise, soft as well as hard however I didn't hear the BIA being used really. There was no turning of knobs or switch use during the time of video. You did use the Lapsus Os sliders but I thought this video was about using different Sound options + capabilities of the BIA. I've got that Module. I know maybe not even half of what it is able to create Soundwise. However, I do know how much MORE it can do when you play with the 2 Switches and all those Knobs. I would love to hear what you can really do with this Module. Why not use it for Drums and Melody or a Bass in your setup instead of always having the safety-net of your Digitakt for Drumbeats and/or melody? I enjoy your videos and always watch/listen to what you say & do since I'm still learning and experimenting with Sounds, Patching in the world of Modular Synthesis. This is all written with high respect for you and all that hard work it takes to create a Soundscape, make a video of it all while you explain what is being patched in a Language [which is not your Native Tongue as they say~]. Your English is very good by the way. I too had to learn English because when I began School I only spoke Greek so nobody could understand what I was saying + I didn't understand what everyone else was saying! I was born in America but everyone in our family is Greek and being first Generation being born in America my parents & Grandparents, etc, didn't think "Oh...we aren't in Greece now we're in the USA. I guess we should also teach the child English..." It was my Teacher who had to tell my parents, "You're in America and you need to teach your child how to speak English. We don't know what is being said." Being 4 years old it was quite easy to quickly learn another Language. Children's Brains are AMAZING. We can just soak up everything we need to learn so quickly! Thanks for your intelligent, quality videos Ihor- I appreciate what you are doing a lot.🎵💡🌵🌌💥👌

Yo! That's a lot of text. Thanks for all your kind words and feedback. Much appreciated! I have to agree with you that this is "ONE of MANY". It certainly is! I guess I made a little too "clickbaity" title. Sorry! However I would respectfully disagree that this video isn't about the capabilities of BIA. It 100% is! CV that comes from Mimetic into the BIA quite interestingly pushes it to its limits. Lapsus Os gives a soft control over that interface. You get rhythmic patterns that sound tight. That you can explore and find another rhythm. You trip! This is just my opinion after all.

There is what the designer aims to achieve - and also there is what the user achieves in reality. In all else there is no other such thing(s) as "The Right Way", especially in synthesis. e.g. Time moves one way, to presume 'backwards' acknowledges the inescapable fact of _forwards._

Eurorack goes over ones head pretty quickly. This is awesome and exactly what I am looking for. What would you think matching those three modules with the arturia minibrute 2 plus some filters as you said? Maybe its me, but I didn't get the essential part to trigger your grove. Is it just a clock, or do you make use of the 1u sequencer? That would mean a horologic solum would also be possible to power those beats and would fit into a 3u case, right? Greatly appreciate your video!
@servantsounds
@servantsounds 3 жыл бұрын
The uMIDI (leftmost 1U module after the output) receives clock information from the Digitakt via MIDI. It's then patched into the Steppy sequencer (centre 1U with the green buttons), which was initially sending 16 triggers per 4 bars to the Mimetic. Programmed like that, there's essentially no difference from a clock module like the Horologic Solum. The real power of the Steppy is when you start to add swing (see 5:10), change the trigger pattern (see 10:00) etc. - that's what makes it different from a clock module. Using the Horologic, you'd still be able to drive the Mimetic, but only at a constant rate, and you could program reset behaviour using the clock divisions. However, the Mimetic is itself a sequencer (and a super powerful one at that), so while the Horologic would limit the type of input, that wouldn't necessarily limit the sequences possible coming out of the Mimetic. Here, the Steppy is used to drive the Mimetic so that adds control over the variation of sequences coming into and going out of the Mimetic. Ricky Tinez has got some good videos taking this approach too!
@IhorMedia
@IhorMedia 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly like @servant described. Steppy + Mimetic is such a combo, but more or less any other trig sequencer will work too. Or MIDI from another instrument. Or even clock!
@servantsounds

@vdlycos
@vdlycos 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for the explanations! In my own words that means the Steppy programs the "when to play", the Mimetic is the "how to play". The BIA can then be multiple different instruments in one module. And the Lapsis is about more control for live performance. E.g. if I use my drumbrute as a steppy alternative with its own sequencer and add swing there, I would achieve the same I guess. Less portable of course :-)

I need to save up _a little_ though because I just finished building my 19" rack (audio interface/compressor/limiter/AKAI S2800/Korg MW-2408). Modular is pretty fucking expensive, argh! Nice studio you've got! My mate has the Digitakt/Rytm 2/OP-1, but I like the TR-8(S) more because I'm coming from DJ'ing. I need faders 😇 Another friend of mine is a sound engineer and is really into modular as well, so I'll probably consult with him first, but I might send you a message in a couple of months. Your setup really resonates a lot with me. Do you do your editing/mastering in Ableton as well? I've tried to teach myself mastering during lockdown. Now the hardware setup is pretty much complete, so I'm going to jam a lot and only mix and 'master' the hardware recordings in Ableton. It's sometimes difficult to make the analog recordings sound great, but it's good fun to keep on trying.

Hey! Thanks for all the kind words! I appreciate you! Modular is expensive indeed. Also the modular synth can be whatever. So you better spend some decent amount of time on research to understand what exactly you want to achieve. Maybe try the VCV Rack to get the ideas. I don't do mastering as such. Most of the times Glue Compressor and Ozone 9 and this is it.

Hi Ihor another Trippy journey into the unknown, Loike it Ace I now have the Pallette case in demo, also Mimetic, Lapsis, BIA but have been waiting for 1U stereo out Tile, is the Eurorack VC /audio converted to Line Level out so can go directly into Digitakt/ EMX 45000 looper or any external pedals???? Would love your advice Many thanks my Friend 👍🆒🎶🎶🎶🎶🌈👌🙏🇬🇧

Thanks this video was an inspiration! I have subscribed. I wondered if you could explain a few things? I tried watching the video a few times but I’m missing something - is the Digitakt the master clock for the eurorack and it is connected via the Intellijel? I’m not sure I understand what steppy is being used for here? Is steppy just sending trigger to BIA and then the signal from mimetic and lapsus is handling the trigs for BIA modulation? It’s such a great outcome I’d just like to understand a little more 🙏

Hey Alex! Thanks for watching! I appreciate you! Regarding your question TLDR - all was exactly how you described! Digitakt sends clock over MIDI into MIDI 1U module in my case. Steppy works as a trigger/gate sequencer and clock divider. Mimetic as a CV sequencer (each step different CV value). Lapsus as just attenuator for Mimetic's CV. In first part of this patch Steppy was triggering all 16 steps, so basically it was kinda mirroring the clock. And it was triggering BIA and Mimetic together. Then I added some swing. Later on in this patch I used less than 16 triggers per bar and used another track of Steppy with one trig to reset Mimetic. Mimetic outputs were used to modulate different things in BIA. Basically idea is following: on every trigger I would have different CV values on every output of Mimetic. With these CV outputs patched into BIA you always get a different sound per trig (depending on what you patched). CV steps can be easily generated randomly on Mimetic, that gives quite an interesting and easy way of experimenting. But the best part is that those CV steps are not continuously random! Because Mimetic saves these random values into every step they play and repeat as a sequence. This is what I called INSTANT TECHNO. Hope that makes sense.

Complains were about some noise, right? I spent some time digging and there is some noise if you use the internal VCA. However it might be just my unit. Tho when it comes to sound it does sound gooooood! (completely technical term) haha
