#IIFYM
If It Fits Your Macros
What is it? Is it great? Or is it crap??
Macros:
- Proteins
- Carbs
- Fats
IIFYM Bros
Fucked up things:
- 1 nutrient that’s never talked about is Fiber
- Fiber is not sexy
Bodybuilding crowd.

Bunch of college kids bored out of their minds
Here’s the thing that NOBODY talks about:
Really shredded and look really good on stage
Does NOT equate to optimal health or optimal performance
Yet to see anyone who has yet to break a world record Olympic lifting or powerlifting eating pop tarts and donuts
As your health declines, your appearance gets worse as well
You’re going to look awful
Oxidative stress
Glycation
Do their show, then disappear
Leads to developing a poor relationship with food
Restricted calorie setting
ALL their focused on is what food they’re going to eat
Training takes a back seat
Social life takes a back seat
Health takes a back seat
IIFYM Instagram Pages
Bodies or Food
Donuts, Pizza, Ice Cream
NOT balanced
The key to success and long term success with dieting is sustainability
Emphasis on sugar is going to mess with you long term and reduce longevity
NOT disputing the fat loss argument of that you can look the way you want eating any food
At some point your goals do shift
Prioritize nutrient density
IIFYM for competitors vs nutrient density foods
Look better when you avoid processed foods
Broccoli
Macros with high food quality

One of the first thing to teach your clients:
Macros and calories; then progress from their
Can become very obsessive
Intuitive Eating
Best intuitive eaters started with a macros prescription
How do you eat when you travel?
It’s not as hard as people make it
Most people try and justify their cravings
Hyperpalatability = something that tastes really really good
These foods trigger opioid receptors
Food addiction is a very real thing
These companies know that
It will still elicit the same response in your brain
When you avoid processed foods and eat a strawberry or apple, it’s delicious
Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should
You physically can put anything you want in your macros

Calories are important

I lost 100lb( 300lb to 200lb) on IIFYM with whole healthy food including 40g of fiber per day. Im at my best health of my life. The info in this video is no accurate. IIFYM does not promote eating unhealthy, but it does promote fitting a few processed foods if you wanna feel like a human once in a while.

In essence it works, I do the reverse I take a poptart and look at its macros and see what I can create from whole food etc that is like a meal for the same calories etc. I don't think a few treats should be demonized but the way the majority of IIFYM sells it is "you can eat as much shit as you want" well done on your use of it correctly to lose weight.

That’s flexible dieting that you’re doing. Iifym is eating whatever you want, as long as it fits your macros.

Actually the processed foods have way more carbs, fats, and protein. So you have to really budget your macros to get you through the day and that is only through eating healthy. Im 37 and it works for me after having 3 kids. So please don’t paint this issue with a broad brush. You count macros in the beginning, but after you start to memorize it. Your eyes begin to be trained on what a right food portion is.

Almost none of the proponents of flexible dieting or IIFYM do any of the things mentioned in this video. Also the term itself originated on the bodybuilding forums in response to the “bros” asking things like “can I eat peanut butter when I cut”. Alan Aragon and a few others essentially got tired of explaining the laws of thermodynamics to them and they started saying “if it fits your macros you can eat it and still lean out”. The philosophy itself got bastardized by people who don’t understand its origins into an idea of a specific diet or regimen where people eat whatever they want as long as it fits their macros. Instead of drawing polarized view points we should be explaining to new comers the principles within a hierarchy of optimal health and body composition. Your caloric total and macronutrient ratios/targets are going to be in that equation and they’re one of the main factors you would manipulate to alter body composition, performance and health. Along with that obviously micros, phytos, etc matter. The main proponents advocating an approach that has you count your macros realize and state the importance of micronutrients, phytonutrients, fiber etc. while I’m sure there are some kids out there just eating whatever, the vast majority of us who mention the term IIFYM don’t. We need to be educating people on the principles of nutritional science not just saying, this diet works better or that diet works better. Furthermore as a side note of semantics, anyone who’s reaching body fat levels below a low end set point isn’t going to be healthy. Ask a natural bodybuilder for his blood work, and then ask his gf how their sex life is going. And then go talk to all the Westside guys who do legit drugs and drink all the time on massive amounts of steroids about their world records.... they have a lot of them. And their health sucks from things far worse than “IIFYM”. Again though, the main point here is that absolutely no one is saying “iifym” has to be junk. Like literally no truly informed researched source has ever once stated that. Lyle McDonald, Alan Aragon, Eric helms, Menno, etc all the guys names whom you’ve heard surrounding the origins of the rise of this never said that. Let’s educate not blanket statement and categorize things into black and white.

I'd say I loosely adhere to the IIFYM principles and it's been doing me well for a couple of years. That is, I track calories but leave a little room for something enjoyable almost every day. But I don't think it means to eating a bowl of M&M's or gorging on sugar. There's a whole spectrum of behavior IIFYM can apply to and I think using the basic idea of it responsibly can help keep eating a diet of broccoli, cod and chicken more sustainable. And what's wrong with yogurt? There's lots of junky yogurt on the shelf, but greek yogurt has a gram of protein per every 10 calories.

I do kinda get the message of this video but people who have kids and stuff cant always stick to the perfect world "bro diets" so IIFYM is a realistic option for those who want to be in shape but need to have flex to whip up those quick not so great meals to get the family fed

So it's just all about moderation. IIFYM does work, and yes you can have the occasional slice of cake or pie, but you can't eat just that. You gotta eat like 80% clean. That's my philosophy at least. You don't have to be scared of indulging in something tasty every once in a while. Especially if you're just a normal person, not an athlete or competitor or anything.

Renaissance Periodization has been fantastic for my nutrition. It’s like counting macros but it’s so much easier with the template foods already selected! I add in a “cheat meal”on the weekends and never stress about attending weddings, social events or business functions. Never STRESS over food and dieting. Make it work for you. Don’t let the diet “run” and prioritize your life.

"Prioritise nutrient dense foods" - Could not agree more! That's the problem with a lot of people who are new to IIFYM and follow what they see on certain instagram profiles rather than doing some deep research themselves and end up eating junk food mostly along with a protein shake to get their macros. Personally, my main 3 meals (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner) are lean af - Always lean meat, complex carbs and veges. My 2 inbetween snacks are also usually lean but I only add something more calorific in order to reach my calorie and fat goals as I always struggle to meet these through lean eating.

Iv seen recently a few vloggers on KZbin use these diets and are definitely not eating nutritionally yet they seem to be within their calorie goal etc. They don't seem to be losing the weight either which reaffirms to me that not all calories are equal. I followed this eating principle and yes I was in the best shape of my life but it started to affect me mentally because like you guys mentioned, it became and obsession. Excellent point, just because you're macros allow you to eat a donut every day or whatever other treat you choose, does not mean you should. I tried being more flexible with my diet and not only did i gain more fat but i quickly realized that giving yourself permission to eat anything you want as long as you stay within your calories screws up your relationship with food way more than eating clean. There is a reason why the good things in life take effort and sacrifise and following iifym takes that sacrifise away in favor for daily indulgences, small as they may be which in turn teaches you nothing about restraint. There are good and bad foods as much as people want to demonize that concept. People just want to rationalize and justify a reason for eating them so suddenly its cool to think of all food as energy and not good or bad. In the end i believe a healthy lifestyle is not about short cuts and it never has been.

Unfortunately a lot of people hit the gym for their appearance and not to break lifting records. A lot of people struggle with eating nutrient dense foods because they miss out on the more delicious processed foods so they use IIFYM as a gateway to get shredded whilst eating the foods they love with putting little thinking into the long term benefits of just eating better overall. Seems to me that iifym is that quick fix to getting the body they want. I use iifym but I eat a majority of nutrient dense foods and if I have extra calories to spare yeah maybe I’ll have a snack that one would be considered junk but it is what it is. Great video.

Just to let you know no one technically speaking fiber is considered a macronutrient and so is water but no one talks about either because they don’t provide energy. A macronutrient is a nutrient required in large amounts (grams, liters) where a micronutrient is just a nutrient needed in small amounts (usually mg or IU)

I totally get what they mean. IIFYM isn’t inherently bad but it can lead to bad habits that as someone on a diet you should be avoiding. I used to eat a lot of protein so by the end of the day I realized I had a lot of carbs left over and so instead of making my chicken dinner a chicken salad, I would drink an energy drink in the mornings since it used the carbs and allowed me to have something tasty in the morning. But after a while it kinda just became a habit to get an energy drink in the mornings. Once I got tired of eating pure protein for every dinner I wanted to change it up, but I couldn’t because I couldn’t stop drinking energy drinks in the mornings and using up half my carb limit. It was a real problem and it made me realize I was kinda approaching my “diet” wrong and instead now I just make healthy full meals, and approach my _portion sizes_ to fit my macros instead, rather than just eating whatever until I’m out of a certain macro and then eating random shit to fill up the rest

You still have to stay within your calories. In my experience, if you eat whatever you want, even if you hit your other macros, if you eat garbage... you’re still gonna go over your calories and if you don’t, you will be nutrient deficient and your gut will be messed up along with everything else over the long term. Where I think it does have value is if you are morbidly obese and need a life saving diet over the short term to get your weight down. The goal in that arena is really do whatever the fuck it takes to keep your calories low and stick with the diet because you’re going to die if you fail. Like in that situation it makes sense. But it’s not a long term lifestyle. Eating healthy and figuring out how to get dialed in for your body is eventually the goal, to feel healthy and to get strong. Like I think there’s a time and a place for that kind of thinking, but it needs to be explained that this is for extreme situations and you still shouldn’t be eating garbage.

Clickbait title is dangerous. IIFYM is probably one of the best ways to lose weight in a healthy manner, especially if you want to lose fat and retain muscle. You guys are making it seem like EVERYONE who follows IIFYM just eats donuts and pizza. I follow IIFYM and haven't had a donut or really anything of the sort in weeks or months. IIFYM is just a way to allow you that flexibility when you want or need it. Just because some IG fitness models who are probably on something anyways post about their pizza and ice cream may be fucking up their health (it's probably more what they're running than what they're eating tbh) doesn't mean us average Joes doing it are fucking up our health. I mean, I get what you're saying, there's a negative hype around iifym, but the true iifym community doesn't imply a sugar-based, or cheat diet mentality. It's just about not needing to argue every single individual food on forums: "bro, iifym then eat it and get swole, bro!" If people don't want to do their research on their own nutrition, then let them eat the poptarts and figure it out the hard way. Their ignorance doesn't translate to a specific way of eating as being "bad".

I've definitely noticed that many who use IIFYM misuse the concept to eat very dirty and if weight on the scale becomes a priority, it can definitely negatively affect your relationship with food. However, I've noticed even if someone misuses IIFYM, they're still aware that their health is deteriorating and muscle gain isn't optimal. I think it's just the clickbait title that is triggering for some people.

I think lots of people are missing the point of the video. They aren’t saying you can NEVER enjoy a single processed food ever again. They are saying that you should make fitting foods into your macros your main focus of life. I also think they don’t want people to fall into the vicious circle of becoming food obsessed which ABSOLUTELY DOES HAPPEN.

Counting macros is the only thing that worked for me. The bodybuilders they are talking about do not eat pop tarts all day these guys are not informed. As far as athletes are concerned there are professional NBA players that eat all kinds of crap and since they are young they are still in great shape. They will still live a long healthy life too.

Processed foods for the most part do not suppress the hunger hormone Ghrelin and to compound the problem they activate the nucleus accumben, the reward center of the brain. It's s vicious cycle that leaves you feeling and looking horrible. When you eat a muffin or a donut for breakfast it will taste so good and may seem satisfying but in reality your body will start to crave more food because the fructose in the muffin will excite your brain leaving you craving for more food. The worst part is your body does not feel good because it is not getting the macro and micro nutrients it needs, so in the long run you really don't feel satisfied and the only way to feel good again is to eat more unhealthy food giving you a temporary fix. This cycle is similar to the way a drug addict reacts to drugs.

These guys act like you’re immature and fat if you enjoy ice cream or snacks here and there..oh my god crucify me we ARE HUMAN....and I don’t think it’s fair to assume that people only count macros so they can fit in junk. I count mine and I eat clean 95% of the time. This video was EXTREMELY one sided and BIAS AS HELL.

Yeah this is stupid... just about everything they talked about doesn’t define IIFYM or flexible dieting in any shapes or form, what iifym basically means is to create a balance of macros so you try and eat 80% healthy and let the other 20% of your total calories come from whatever foods you want

I realized it’s Peak Week that fucked me up. My last prep I decided not to do the show about three weeks out. My focus switched to health and sustainability. I’m so glad I didn’t do that show. I’m happy and healthy - including mentally healthy.

Macros isn’t about eating a ton of shitty 🥘 food. It’s about having some balance in a pretty much structured meal plan. Ground turkey vs. ground beef one day if you are super over ground turkey or oatmeal and berries or protein pancakes. No one on macros just eats poptarts all day.

It doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to to realize eating highly processed junk food isn’t going to work out in the end. IIFYM was never supposed to be about glorifying junk food. It was supposed to be about it being ok to eat a bowl of ice cream every couple of days on top of your already healthy diet. But of course social media “influencers” took it the wrong way.

Mediterranean diet, veggies meat and BREAD. I do like bread, although am favoring brown whole wheat bread, I don't mind white bread as well. I tried IIFYM for a couple of months and I didn't feel happy and it didn't help me. I didn't know about IIFYM before watching this video. I was trying to weigh and count.. na na na

It's hilarious how upset this video makes people. They're literally just saying there are ramifications of eating highly processed junk food and justifying it because it "fits your macros." I track my macros but also prioritize my health through whole natural food. Obviously if you're counting your macros, you should be tracking your micronutrients, fiber, and vitamins as well as tons of other factors.

Bros don’t want to hear this but processed foods are actually crap for you, no other country eats them to the extent that Americans consume them on a daily basis & unsurprisingly we’re one of the unhealthiest countries in the world. Just try to eat more whole, minimally processed foods mostly plant based (veggies & fruits) with moderate lean, grass fed meats/poultry & wild seafood. Processed foods from time to time are okay but some of you IIFYMers eat them in every meal without realizing

In France, you eat bread every single day. In Italy, pizza or pasta are daily occurrences as is a sweet breakfast. All of these are "processed foods".

I remember I had friends that payed a trainer over $600 for nutritional advice and he put them on IIFYM, then they were eating poutines and fast food cause it fit their macros. Needless to say it didnt work and they gained weight. That being said these guys do make a great point. Also note they say it can lead to a bad relationship with food, not that it always will.

Video makes a serious mistake in that the whole foundation of this argument is based on a false premise; an assumption that everyone on IIFYM just sit down and eat cereal and pop tarts all day. This is not true.
