If you relate to this please comment. I took a drop this year, 2020 to 2021. Those who read this for advice, spoiler alert, I did not get into a govt college. I am writing this comment partially to make sense of my own story. Till 10th grade, I considered people who did maths and went for coaching from 7th grade to be 'other'. I was not like them. Instead, I was good at bio, litreature and social subjects. I thought about a career in law with writing on the side. But I slowly realised that I was afraid of maths. I was scared that I was 'slow', dumb or stupid. I hated that feeling....and ultimately, I felt that choosing some other subject would be like 'running away' from maths, like cowardice. So there I was in 11th, and suddenly the twist: you see my father was also in an IITian, from one of the oldest ones. People had high expectations, and soon I began to feel pressure like never before. I did the regular things, went for coaching. Studied as hard as I could while also figuring things out. Now, keep in mind, I was very weak in all these subjects. I was placed in a batch with kids who had been preparing from 6thclass. I was very lost. Regardless, I tried hard, cried a lot, and finally ended 2020 with 93%tile. It meant a lot to me.....even though it is objectively not a good score. Smack after Mains results my grandfather got corona. In the two weeks between mains results and advanced, I could do very little except survive. 10 days after Adv he passed away. It devastated me. My parents, always pushing for a drop year now became even more convinced that I should do it. Due to all the worry in my mind, I also felt that I had been cheated out of a chance to study as well as I could have. But it was ultimately too much for me. I was grieving very badly, crying a lot. I wanted to write a book to honour my grandfather, but had no time. In 2021 my family got COVID again. This time I got infected and was also very sick. I felt the after effects even 1 month after the infection. If you are reading this DO NOT IGNORE post COVID symptoms, like dizziness, headaches, nausea, please remain careful and vigilant! I was a mess. After the sickness, I was almost ready to give up. I had scored only 90%tile so far. Soon after , we found out we were getting transferred, and I had a very hard time dealing with the fact that I would be leaving the city I spent 17 years with my grandfather to go to a place where he would never come. Somehow though,I geared up and finally managed to score 93.5%tile. And that was it....I studied very hard for adv, but did not qualify. Now I'm joining a tier three private college. I feel isolated and alone. I feel like no one can understand me, because who has the background that I do? Most of my father's batchmates' children have also gone to an IIT. My failure feels like it is much bigger than that of others'; after all, my father was an IITian! How come you didn't get there? That's what people will say. I wish they knew ki IIT is not hereditary, and that no one can really help you except yourself. I feel like I have failed my family, especially my father. He always talks about the bright people at IIT, the adundance of opportunities, all the fun he had. I know what I am missing out on constantly. My future feels uncertain and shaky. More to the point, I feel very unhappy. The only solace I have is that I worked as hard as I could, through my grief, pain and ofcourse physical illness. I don't think anyone else in my position could have done more than me. If you made it till here, thanks for reading. Also as a reminder to myself and others: exams do not define your worth. A pics of advice: do not make big life decisions when you are grieving. Please take care of your health. Physical and mental. Do not be afraid to seek help when you need it. Thank you jc sir, the video was very informative to me....because you make several great points that I think everyone should consider, especially about being extremely specific about what needs to fixed in the drop year. I also thank you for providing a space to share my story.

Listen, I think only a very small percentage of kids scored as per their potential this year after 2 years of pandemic and online classes. Kids who expected 99 percentile got 96 percentile, kids who expected 96 got 92 and so on. You are in very good company. Try not to brood on missed opportunities and just take your dad's anecdotes at face value- don't take it personally. Tier 3 college can be a Tier 1 college for you, if you use all the opportunities to catapult yourself to success. You tried, you failed, now pick yourself up and move on. Your life will be as bright and aspirational as any iitian's once you find your passion and follow it. Keep your chin up and move on cheerfully!

There is no point in having regrets .. I took a lot of things for granted and iam unsure what to even pursue .. i have no clue about my passion... i just wish we could be friends ..all the very best to your future and no worries .. we will get tons of opportunities ahead to make the most out of life !

Excellent advise Prof. JC. Would add 5 points / qualifiers; 1. Only a very very small minority of students at class 12th stage have figured out completely what they want to do and then a very small minority within this already miniscule group actually end up there, as multiple uncertain factors come into play with passage of time. So, please do not model your life upon these choices, ONLY. 2. Drop a year at maximum only in case as a student you are very very sure of what actually you can do different in the drop year to qualify for IIT, and that too for a niche branch. 3. Taking a long view of your career, this 1 additional year at the end of your working career could also translate into that coveted promotion / you getting paid your highest salary for that year which could be very high considering that you have made it to the top of your desired profession with a good 35 years of experience. 4.There are many many ways to reach the top within your choice of work, IIT/NIT happens to be just 1 option and not the ONLY option. 5. Make the best utility of whatever college / branch that comes your way and continue doing your best. Lots of luck to everyone reading this😊

Once again a very universal and balanced advice sir...I've got hooked on to your videos inspire of being a doctor. Would like to add that aspirants should stop getting paranoid that their life will be ruined if they dont get into IIT/AIIMS...life is not like a domino effect which will come tumbling down. You will get multiple opportunities at every stage to improve. Plus, your advice to keep an "open and flexible mind" is gold. During MBBS, I loved Surgery as a subject. I loved reading it. However 2 months of Surgery rotation during internship proved I was not built for it. In short, don't get fixated on the mental idea about a subject/department/college. Allow experience to mould your beliefs :)

@@Prof_JC lovely video sir. Although I am not a jee aspirant any more, it still hits home to think that there was a time when I used to sit on that desk for 8 hours a day, pondering about my life at the sacred IIT, that I unfortunately couldn't get into. But honestly I did introspect and I don't feel anything. I guess the hype of IIT never really made a place in my mind and IIT never got associated with my emotions in a way strong enough to make me drop. So here I am, joining MANIT CSE instead of IIT G civil, hoping that my parents and teachers are wrong and my decesion of taking CSE over IIT turns out to be correct. Honestly, it send shivers down my spine as I think about a future me regretting and coming in my dreams, crying, begging to take the other way to life. But now the judgement is done and decesion taken. And I can only hope for a sweet tommorow now.

jee might not be the end of our career sir, but not being able to make it through Jee advance will surely certainly deprive us of the opportunity to learn from such an amazing teacher as you and although that doesn't limit a student's potential, but maybe the student would have ended at a better place had he gotten that chance....the problem with india is unlike the western countries quality education isn't democratized...and iits are one of the very few places which guarantees this...as a result a student having a keen interest in a subject who might not perform well in jee gets eliminated

It is so nice now there are so many ways/information, a potential student can determine what they want and fits their profile. Forty years back; I had no clue what I should do after high school and went by someone saying I should apply for IIT. I applied and was selected. At the counselling session, a professor recommended to enroll in Mechanical engineering and went with that. Did decently well but again went with the trend at that time to go to USA. After MS, started as a design engineer and within a year my manager asked me to get involved with finance. I liked that area and after that never worked as an engineer and have done well in career. My advice is to be open to any suggestion, be surrounded with people who are knowledgeable and be willing to try anything.
@suddhasattasaha47933 жыл бұрын
Each and every word of this wise professor is correct to the greatest possible accuracy in context of this thought process which builds up for JEE. I would just like to add one more point: As the professor correctly said that some students definitely need to rethink and reconsider their decision to give compt. exams, i.e. to become engineers, sometimes I think it is the fault of the school's from where they complete their class 10. After that, in many schools , you can simply take up science ( no matter why you decided so), or perhaps admission to such stream is granted on basis of class 10 Board results - which are nothing near to a science "aptitude " exam. Hence some students who think will do science in plus 2 , end up getting frustrated and perhaps study in some private colleges or do something else, but anyway, what I strongly believe is that after class 10 , the schools must conduct an ADMISSION TEST , FOR ANY CANDIDATE WHO WANTS TO TAKE UP ANY STREAM . SO FOR SCIENCE STREAM , AN ADMISSION TEST SHOULD BE CONDUCTED WHICH MUST MEASURE THE FOLLOWING FEATURES: 1.)TRUE APTITUDE OF THE STUDENT TOWARDS PCM 2.) ACCURACY, SPEED, AND PRECISION IN ANSWERING GOOD QUALITY PROBLEMS OF PCM 3.) ANALYTICAL ABILITIES 4.) OBJECTIVE APPROACH TOWARDS MCQ PROBLEM SOLVING 5.) CONCEPTUAL CLARITY 6.) TIME MANAGEMENT , BY PLACING TIME CONSTRAINTS IN THE EXAM THE RESULTS OF SUCH A STANDARD ADMISSION TEST TO CLASS 11 SHOULD COME OUT AS RANK, WITH A GOOD CUTOFF , WITHIN WHICH SCIENCE STREAM ADMISSION FOR CLASS 11 WILL BE TAKEN. THIS WILL NOT ONLY HELP THE STUDENTS WHO GET THROUGH THIS EXAM WITH A GOOD RANK, BUT ALSO BE AN EYE OPENER FOR THOSE WHO WERE SEEING A MIRAGE OF TAKING UP SCIENCE STREAM. THIS WILL BOOST ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE SELECTED STUDENTS AND HELP THE ONES WHO DIDN'T QUALIFY, TO REALISE THEIR TRUE INTEREST , BECAUSE AS HAWKING SAYS, " WE ALL ARE GOOD AT SOMETHING OR THE OTHER". MY SCHOOL CONDUCTED SUCH AN ADMISSION TEST , FOR WHICH I AM VERY HAPPY AND GRATEFUL. THIS TYPE OF ELIMINATIONS WILL SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THE HUGE COMPETITION FOR JEE, BY DRASTICALLY REDUCING THE NO. OF CANDIDATES, AS NOW ONLY STUDENTS WITH A TRUE APTITUDE AND LOVE FOR SCIENCE WILL THINK OF APPEARING IN JEE, and come out with flying colours.
@gaurigoyal57443 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree with you. Although I liked science bin 10th and I am able to do well in both Maths and Chemistry, I realised I'm not up for Physics. Had I given such test for Science Stream I would have known if it was really Science that I wanted to pursue. Maybe I wouldn't have suffered so much. I still don't feel like studying Science. I'm good at it, but it's a drag. I'm in 12th and there's no going back.
@suddhasattasaha47933 жыл бұрын
@@gaurigoyal5744 You have an advantage that you are good in two subjects, think of people who are not good in pcm, but genius in Computer Science- they actually get killed by this education system of India.And , it is a very negative thought to bear in mind that " you are not up to Physics". If you think like this, it will degrade your own confidence . You have to have a positive bend of mind in every negative situation. And as for physics, well it is " Fun with a big challenge !". The main reason 95% of high school students fear physics is because they are either not able to solve difficult problems or the concepts go over their head( that's what some people think). But the secret to enjoy Physics is the fact that you will never be hanged if you can't solve a problem. Instead have fun in learning it . You may not pursue a career in physics, but why not enjoy it for 2 years ,!If you're stuck in a problem, simply try solving it again, and most importantly have faith in yourself .As Swamiji says " If you have faith in yourself, even MOUNTAINS CAN BE CRUSHED TO ATOMS".

July wale paper mai bhi mere pai math nhi ho paya tha. Vaise math ka Maine pad bhi nhi tha par fir board mai to padh ek adh question to banana chiye tah. Ab dost mai drop ki soch raha hu aor kota allen coaching ki soch raha hu. Kya tum kuch sawal ke jawab de sakt you 1. Kya mai drop lu ya nhi ( Maine apni ek sala ki sari mehnat aur preparation percentile bata di hai uper. Mere boards mai 87 % hai) 2.aur aagar drop lu to allen ke do batch hai droper ke liye ek jee main level ka( fees=88 hazar). Aur dusra jee main + advanced wala ( fees =1 lakh 60 hazar). Mai advance clear kardu iske kval 10 percent kah sakti hu) to kya khali jee main wala batch lu aur keval jee main pai focus karu jaise ki ab 2023 mai jan mai hi pahla paper hoga is vajah se time bhi kam hai. Ya fir jee main+advanced wala lu.

Sir, this is excellent advice. I am sharing all your videos with my brother who is just starting college. I agree with your points. My case was the opposite though. Unfortunately I scored too good. Since my childhood, I have always been interested in space. Therefore I wanted to study Aerospace Engineering at IIT Kanpur. But I scored too well in JEE Advanced. Due to societal pressure, I ended up taking Computer Science at IIT Patna. But I was never satisfied with the courses because I did not have much passion for the subject. But on the side I kept nurturing my passion by working on interdisciplinary robotics projects. In fact, I have more friends from electrical and mechanical than CS. Now that I have graduated from IIT Patna, I have managed to realize my dream by accepting a Research Associate position at the Aerospace Engineering Department at IIT Kanpur. Next year, I plan to get admitted to the PhD program. It was really difficult switching streams from CS to AE. I am the only person I know who has done this. Coming from a CS background, it feels weird being amongst Aerospace and Mechanical engineers, but it is worth it to be able to do what you love.

Currently studying in 12th.....gave my 3rd paper of term 1 (cbse)today........ Never decided would end up loving IIT...... For me it was never a choice..... But circumstances and the responsibilities which I recognised I've as the eldest child in my family ,I have decided to crack it.......... For me 'upsc' was the first choice.... But soon realized that when I'm having a chance to test my potential and get a rank.... Then why shouldn't I try it?...... Questioned myself that would I be able to do it? The answer to my surprise was "yes"..... As I got the real motivation born from the grief which my family members had gone through in their lives......and I have the ability to change their lives..... So why shouldn't I try it..... But was in a dilemma whether I'm doing right or wrong as first upsc and then jee..... Am I not focussed and not able to stick to one goal.......? Many questions in mind, suddenly I realized that suppose if get a good rank and my desired department then after few years I can give upsc as well..... In this way I'll be able to support my family financially as well as I'll be able to pursue my passion (upsc)....... With this.... Just 2-3 months in hand....... Straight after term 1, have planned to exhaust myself and prepare for jee in the given time....... I just want to know from you sir ,"am I on the right track? Or should I drop and start it from scratch? Will I be able to crack it this time?"......I'm not afraid of failing! Just this questions are making me anxious more and more as the date of mains is coming near up. Kindly help me please!!🙏

10:35 is something that summarizes my journey. Wanted to take arts, parents didn't let me. Had to take maths. 11th flew by and i still wasn't sure how i ended up here. I'm still not sure how i ended up here but now, i try not to think about it by keeping focus on studies, but still, after 14 hours of studying everyday, when i lie down on my bed, the only thing that comes on my mind is how could've been my journey if i took arts...
@Prof_JC3 жыл бұрын
When you say arts, do you mean literature, writing etc.? Or, do you mean painting, sculpting? Or, perhaps music? And are you currently in 12th science? If so and your interest is in painting, sculpting then you should seriously consider architecture. If you are interested in literature, writing ... then there is a big need of excellent science communicators ... an undergraduate in science together with a proficiency in writing is a niche expertise to have and can lead to fulfilling and exciting career. If your interest is in music then there is beautiful research field out there with people from maths, physics, and engineering backgrounds doing great work. I think if you explore the possibilities then it can lead to something truly enriching for you. I hope my words help you rethink your career in a fresh light.

@@Prof_JC By arts, I meant literature and writing. I loved writing short stories. But now, that all is gone. I already passed 12th this year and now am a dropper for pretty obvious reason; studying science as a subject never interested me. I loved reading about experiments and all theories in physics, different real life effects, but never considered taking this as a course, and yet, I'm here, trying to get in a top engineering college. But now, I've kinda convinced myself, that I'll let the tide of time take me with its flow. All I can do, is work hard in the direction I'm taken too. Also, thank you for your words sir. Sir I started preparing for JEE 2021 way back in April , 2019 after my boards got over . I joined a local coaching in Jharkhand. Initially things seemed to be easy but then I got a smartphone. Simultaneously my school started which meant that I had to work hard to manage everything . Things got messed up and I started preparing just via KZbin I started getting 40-50 marks in 11th grade . I was studying but that just wasn't enough . After wasting the 11th grade , I started really positively in 12th grade but during mid March , COVID arrived . I got too much distracted . And wasted the whole year . 2020 was completely wasted . In 2021 January , Pre Board -1 was conducted . 9/70 - Chemistry and Physics , Mathematics - 15/80 . I tried to manage somehow but my distraction didn't stop . Somehow with God's grace I passed the second pre Boards but now the boards got postponed . I planned to drop early but my distraction and amidst all the postponement, 4 more months passed . October 7th , I was in Kota and the classes began . The pace was too high for me because my basics were not clear . I was again suffering , backlogs started piling up . I stopped giving tests . I did homeworks at times but never regularly. April 16th , I am back in Jharkhand. Confidence is negative . I just keep searching for carrier and stuff daily . I have WBJEE through which I might get a private college but my confidence level for the JEE mains which is just a week later is tending to negative . How should I approach life sir ? I just keep feeling like a loser every now and then .

An IIT degree is not worth the effort, our education system is fucked up the earlier you realize this the better. I work at a FAANG+ company and 6/11 of my manager's direct reports are from tier 3/no name colleges. Grinding leetcode helped me more than my IIT degree in getting a software job. I can't emphasize enough how useless the hustle for top colleges is in this country. As long as you are dedicated and willing to learn, FAANG isn't some pipe dream, it's easily attainable and they are hiring so many tier 3 college students these days. In addition FAANG is barely a benchmark, these companies are huge so their bar is actually lower than most people think since they have to hire en masse. Usually startups which have a promising future are the ones which are the most exclusive followed by top hedge funds. Also it's just sad looking at these guys waste time in useless corporates. They are the brightest minds, usually the brightest minds in other countries are at the forefront of research.

The recent placement records of IIT's kindly disagree with you. Anyone who says IIT's are overrated/not worth it don't actually value its existence. I myself haven't been able to get into an IIT, but I can definitely say that preparing for IIT's is definitely worth it and I don't regret trying to get into one. The students in IIT's make them highly reputed, not the institute itself. People get into IIT's for that peer quality. You won't find that quality in LPU, amity, sharda, or your local college. The environment you grow up in matters alot.
@gaandmeungli39723 жыл бұрын
@@pikachu8755 I just said its not worth the effort, given the low probability of getting in. A CS degree from lnmiit will fetch you a better placement than those arbitrary IIT engineering departments. The tag no longer matters, the general convention now is: if you can clear the interview you get the job. CSE is a completely different ball game, less than 0.1% of jee aspirants get into CSE at an IIT - that's where those placement records come from. Also, those 1Cr+ packages are a scam, nothing more, nothing less. Most of them are inclusive of 4/5 year RSUs and a one time joining bonus. Microsoft and Uber include 4 year RSUs in their CTC. What seems like 1Cr isn't even 40 lakhs cash.

West Bengal Board students have traditionally gotten very high marks. I don't have the information about the current ranges that the toppers score. However, something around 90% looks good on your CV. If you think that is easily achievable, then strive for more. At the end, you know what kind of a student you are, and you should aim to go secure a score that is always a bit higher than your comfortable range.

@@mouchakquorabagchi6644 All old iits have clubs like business clubs and other finance related clubs,where people learn extra things which excite them apart from their course study of their regular BTech. That's why most of the people in IIT s get a job which isn't of the domain of what he/she may have studied in their bachelor's degree. Many trading companies came in IIT Kharagpur and gave domestic salary above 1 crore this year. Those companies also include business analyst positions.

First of all decide for yourself. Think about it this way: Are you going to regret all your life if you don't give yourself another chance? If yes, then please have a free and frank discussion with your parents. It is not going to be pleasant. But you have to face it. You will be able to convince them only if you are yourself convinced first.
