absolutely exceptional structure, flow and explanation to this review. top marks and thanks, it's made my decision to buy the AO200 over an old higher end amp from Pioneer Reference or Sony ES for the same money, AND it avoid the probable need to re-cap an old one.

I really like your reviews. You are very clear (to me) and don't over-use audiophile-speak. I do, however, appreciate those reviewers who tend to define their findings to greater degrees. Chinese audio design and engineering has certainly progressed rapidly and that's a good thing for us consumers. This amp teamed with a good DAC and perhaps even a tube buffer (to really open the sound) would be interesting. I am tempted to purchase an amp like this just to see and hear how it might work within my current (larger) room system. I use a Schiit Modius from my computer and then pass the signal into a high quality tube buffer before the pre-amp. I really like the results. If, however, this amp did not meet my expectations (for the larger room) I could use it on my desk-top where I am currently using a massive (Chinese) tube amp (Yaqin) that is soon to be retired. Thank you and keep up the good work🇨🇦

@@eltonc1505 Sorry for the late reply. I use a buffer made by Space-Tech, located in Western Canada. Model: Buf 003. Its an older model and works just fine. It has an interesting circuit in that it can take (input) either a balanced source or RCA single ended and output a balanced signal through a set of RCA (output). I have personally met the owner (and designer) of the company and he is brilliant when it comes to audio design. I suggest a good look at his website.

I own the AO200 and agree with everything said including the relative shallowness of the depth in the soundfield. That's a deal breaker for me as a replacement for my tube integrated amplifier in my main system. Which is why I've incorporated it into my desktop system, where I'm very pleased with it.

Mine was delivered yesterday. They got my money. Many of these ChiFi products, such as this one, have a multitude of components from Europe, Japan and the US inside, potentially more than some brands associated with being "Made in America", "Made in the UK", etc.

This is great and very timely. I haven't seen any reviews that detail the differences between the da9 and ao200 yet, and here it is! I think my preferences lean more towards yours wrt sound signature so I really appreciate your points, especially about the more "in your face" quality of the ao200...I think I'll prefer the nuance of the da9 but I am going to try them side by side, just because I can :) I am also astounded by the sound quality of the da9 - I currently have it paired with the topping d70s in my very small apartment ...holy hell it's just magical. It quite literally brings a smile to my face every time I listen. I am really looking forward to trying the ao200 as well to see if I can identify differences, and you've already given me a good start regarding what to listen for. Love your reviews in general but this on is especially appreciated - thank you!

I have been playing with the ao200 the last few days, listening a lot on it's own and doing my best to attempt a side by side comparison with the da9, and I did hear a difference! I tend to agree with iiWi's descriptions - especially the lack of depth didn't turn me on in the same way the da9 does. I also heard a difference with the lower mid-range (possibly into the upper-bass range too?) - to me it sounded a bit "messy" in that area, almost like a sort of background..mood? instead of a solid supporting structure. the ao200 sounds good, no doubt, but I've satisfied my curiosity and I'm now convinced I'm a da9 girl, 100%!
@AbsoluteFidelity
@AbsoluteFidelity 2 жыл бұрын
I came to the same conckusion as you after having the A0200 next to the DA9. The DA9 just sounded more 3 dimensional, with so much more things happening behind the speakers rather than inline with the speakers. The DA9 sounded more balanced, like everything is more neutral, the ao200 have bits and pieces standing out. Oh and instrument separation, the da9 does it more precisely and accurately, the a0200 can somewhat sound cluttered. The DA9 is no joke, especially when paired with great dacs like the one you have and the d90se. Another option would be the Topping PA5 amp, I just got it a week back and Im more impressed with it than the DA9. If you wanted an upgrade, you now know where to turn to. It will also match your dac better. Lol!

I have an HO100 and C100 by SMSL and think they are absolutely rock solid products, haven't tried out my PO100 Pro yet but I will soon, just don't think I'll get much advantage from it unless I get a Dac that uses I2S. Very interesting, I have been researching these smsl's and I have a Ao200 coming. I hope it lives up to my expectations. I'm glad you did some comparisons to AB integrated amps as I was concerned that they were primely intended as desktop units for nearfield listening and not have the ability to scale up. Well now after using the smsl for a couple of weeks I 'm pleased to report that it sounds great and overall a upgrade to the Rotel ( better highs, more crisp details, improved soundstage, not as much bass but better controlled not as tubby. Maybe not as full a midrange but made up for it in other areas. There is a couple of areas which the rotel appears to do better, but I find hard to explain, I notice it in vocal clarity on occasions and mainly guitar solos; natural expression, a linking together of the notes with subtle nuances which comes across as a speedy delivery from the rotel. It could be the fuller range of the smsl is masking slightly these areas but I continue to a/b them and try to work out what exactly the difference is. Still remarkable what £200 gets you nowadays.

This new amp arrived yesterday and I hooked it up, put a cd on repeat and let it play away quietly for several hours. The sound stage is a bit closed in and one dimensional. Seems to have a little more detail than my old A/B Adcom. It appeared to get gradually louder over time, and I'm expecting the soundstage to open up and increase in volume over time... At the moment though it seems little better than my tiny home built Y148 chucking out 10 wpc for 12v. There was no "wow" when I first listened even half seriously with the exception perhaps of the treble, which reveals a little more detail. The bass is very good but no better at the moment than either the Y148, or the Adcom. It's a beautiful item, very well constructed but I need to hear some differences. I believe that will come after burning in...

Brate, I'm afraid you are not correct about the PSU being different for they use the same in both DA-9 and AO200. The pre-stage is also the same. The difference is in the internal layout of components. DA-9 had some problems with the PSU being too close to speaker outs and speaker wiring being too close to the (noisy) display controller. New and better layout resulted in a lower noisefloor with the AO200.

While I do like the inexpensive class D amps, I will keep my class AB amp. It isn't much larger or heavier (10lbs); and while it puts outs a mere 34/61 watts in 8/4 ohms it is relatively high current capable at up to 15 amps/ch. It still outperforms them in SQ, IMO...albeit maybe, not by too much, but enough. I'll have to try one. Wish it didn't have BT and an internal dac. Would rather have another RCA input. I do like the sub-out option though. Not a fan of the blue bars on the screen, but if you can disable the screen, that would be ok.

@@nocnymarek7645 Keces E40. There are several reviews on it. Forgot where it was stated to output up to 15 A (one of the reviews) but it wouldn't be continuous, as most max amp ratings but it is still very decent especially for the size. On a polish site, it gives the following specs: Rated power (1% THD + N, 1kHz) [W] 8 Ω, 2x 60 Rated power (1% THD + N, 1kHz) [W] 4 Ω, 2x 75 Sensitivity (for maximum power) [V] 1x 0.22 Signal / noise ratio (A-weighted filter, referred to 1W) [dB] 91 Dynamics [dB] 109 Damping factor (referred to 4 Ω) 153 While similar to the Rega Brio, it has a lower noise floor and good hard hitting but tight bass. Very nice mods and no complaints on the highs but some amps do extend further. It's a solid little amp and sounds better than the class D amps I have heard at or below its price at the time I purchased it. It has, like much equipment seen some price increases. I think, within its power limits and depending on speakers, it performs nearly as well as Hegel, among others.

Out of curiosity I bought one. I agree with your assessment that the highs are transparent and crisp and there is a good control of the bass (even with floorstander speakers). You did mention it but I have to emphasize that voices are very thin and have no body, it doesn’t matter which EQ setting I choose (you did not say which was your favorite). I consider this lean coolness as a substantial flaw. Even a mediocre Rotel class AB Amp beats it in regards of reproduction of voices (but has other shortcomings).I did test it with the same DAC as you: Denafrips Ares 2. Is the SMSL a good deal: yes! Does it please even audiophile ears: not quite.

I agree with your expert analysis. My experience with the SMSL AO200 confirms it can't be beat for the price. I had this amp for about a week and didn’t really find it that outstanding. Sure, it has more power than its little brother, the SA300. This USB port is a digital input, not output... You can connect your PC to it directly and internal DAC in this amp will do D/A conversion. If you want to use Dragonfly, you would stick it in your PC and then connect it's 3.5mm out to 2xRCA inputs on this amp (analog inputs). The 6000A has a very well implemented DAC in its own right. It is imo definitely better than the E30, in fact as good as DACs costing twice as much as the E30. I know this because I have both, but dispensed with using it when I bought the 6000A. I'd say don't bother with the SMSL if you have the funds for a 6000A. There's no contest when it comes to inputs and outputs and you can easily upgrade it by adding a power amp to its preamp output.

I have a 6000A with a Volumio Primo streamer/DAC. Sounds incredible and up there with the Naim / Arcam setup I had 20 years ago. It’s a proper step up from SMSL but costs £1100 (for both)! Before this - when my AVR died, I used a cheap Class D amp like the one reviewed here, and was very impressed with the sound for the money. Basically using the SMSL and similar you can get a much better ‘budget’ setup than you used to be able to. But the Audiolab is a definite step up and is built like a peice of Military equipment to boot. I also use it for Bluetooth and it even makes Spotify sound awesome.

@@mag4633 I don't stream myself and so can't comment about streaming really. But if you're going to use a streamer/DAC, I think that unless you're going to spend quite a lot, the DAC in the 6000A is going to be better -- Audiolab have a LOT of experience with the Sabre ESS chip and know how to make the best of it. I'd recommend being sure you could connect your streamer in such a way that it could use the 6000A DAC rather than its own internal one. One other option to consider is the 6000A play version, which includes a streamer, but costs £200 more. Some say that as an amp it doesn't sound quite as good as the 6000A, and some don't like its streamer, so I'd audition it if I were in the market for an integrated amp/streamer.
