@randszzob85904 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Useful review. I got this free with the current (amazing value) Group Buy offer so thought I better check out what it can do :-) Your cymbal swell would be even better by retaining the note-to-note variation, and superimposing a velocity fade. e.g. using Logical Edit in Cubase, or similar. Also, the snare roll is unrealistic because your note locations don't reflect what a drummer would play. Try some iterative quantization on that to make it sound more realistic. No doubting that this is a powerful tool in addition to a good sample library (or two!).
@magneticpitch3 жыл бұрын
thanks for the demo... a few shortcomings to the software imho: can't turn the snare off or adjust it so it's making only a little contact with the bottom head. that bums me out as i like playing with the snare off in many situations. which leads me to my next point (a really BIG one): ONLY STICKS?!?!? i love playing toms with soft mallets, such a beautiful sound. what about soft mallets? hot rods? brushes? other materials? You have a jazz kit as one of your defaults! those are the 2 things that really stuck out to me. what about a tambourine mounted on the hi-hat? that's not very unusual.. or a cowbell? Being able to tune all the drums to the barest of head tension, and being able to size the drums to extreme proportions would be fantastic additions, to really take full advantage of the physical modelling and vastly extend the flexibility and range of timbre. imagine a 3" diameter roto tom? what about a 30" floor tom? in real life, when playing songs i tend to prepare my kit in different (sometimes) subtle ways so each song has it's own character/palette. But obviously this software is built around the idea of modelling the most common drums and making them sound great. i'll probably get the starter edition (it has only 2 kits) on the current IK Multimedia Group Buy, essentially getting it for free (or about $12 if i divide my initial layout by the total number of free softwares i get to select). Will be good to have a more real sounding midi drum instrument than the ones i already have, and when the relative cohesion of the drum sound (in rock or pop, etc) is more important to a song than custom preparations and virtually unlimited volume and timbre and techniques and resonances...

The thing I like most about these drums is they are modeled, not sampled. Just a world of difference in terms of flexibility.

it should be noted that a specific requirement for this drum library is Minimal: Intel® Core™ i5 with support for AVX. also the room sounds in modo drums are a bit lame. I think it's better to just cut out the room, and add your own room reverb. Also, many of the drums have Right Hand and Left hand triggers, so for things like snare, you probably get better sound using both. Especially since you can adjust where the left and right hands hit on the drums.
@hifimidi5 жыл бұрын
I completely forgot to mention the AVX requirement. I thought it was hard to hear a difference between some reverbs, but some of their DSPs like eq and compression were really useful. Great point about the snare.
@ReMIX0825s5 жыл бұрын
@@hifimidi I agree the FX are very useful. I've not found the rooms to be appealing, but turning the room down, I've been able to do most of all the necessary dynamic and tonal changes needed within MODO Drums via edit of the insturments and after FX. its very versatile and worthy of the MODO brand. Ill have to dream of a MODO guitar next.

It does sound good to my ear but holy hell, more expensive than Superior Drummer 3? 379€ with VAT vs 329€ for SD3 on Thomann and that's the intro price, the normal price would be almost 500€ with the 24% VAT (the site says 399€ without) if I'm not mistaken. edit: hmm, the crossgrade price from MODO bass + some 50€ off coupon I got brought the VAT-less price down to 150€ which isn't bad at all

the best way to think of the price comparison is that for the most part, you would never need to buy expansions for Modo drums like you do with superior drummer because you can build any drum kit you want to your our personal preference in modo drums.

How do you think this compares to Superior Drummer 3?
@hifimidi5 жыл бұрын
Superior Drummer samples are perfectly recorded, the drums are authentic, the features are logically laid out and easy to use, and it is my go-to plugin. However, the sample sizes are gigantic, the cymbals swells don't sound realistic, and the pieces aren't as customizable. Cymbals and snares are two pieces that need to be very expressive. SD3 sounds great but lacks a little bit in that area. So far, MODO Drums sound good on their own. I can't comment on how close they get to the drums they are trying to model, but I love the expression of the cymbals and snare. I also love the customization of each piece. I will say that SD3 has a greater selection of grooves and that the Tap-To-Find feature and song builder are AMAZING tools. Also, the fact that you can take a drum audio track and import it into SD3 and trigger SD3's samples is a HUGE bonus for SD3's side. I'm going to work with MODO Drums a little more and see how expressive it can be.
@neospora66785 жыл бұрын
@@hifimidi Thanks for the elaborate answer! Maybe you do this already, but I usually apply some smoothing (found in the drums tab) to make swells sound more realistic in SD3, works for snare rolls etc as well:)

@andesneko4 жыл бұрын
MIDI 2.0 isn't widely available yet. That said, it technically supports 256. But we have been using so much more than MIDI since forever ago, plain MIDI is just part of what most DAWs and instruments use and many things have been accomplished with modern workarounds. So with or without 2.0 we can have more velocity values, and with 2.0 we can definitely have a ridiculous amount of values.

Vocaso Galvani no, I’m referring to the product features listed on the website. Sample based instrument dynamics layers are limited to how many recordings were made of that one note. Since this is algorithmic, it is theoretically unlimited. So the transition between dynamics is smoother and more expressive. More realistic? That’s debatable.

Honestly though, I think people's expectations these days are irrational. With the amount of tools we have at our disposal for post-processing, and with all the kits they have there's no excuse not to make any drum track KILLER for any given song with pretty much any drum VSTi in this price range. Since forever, sound engineers have had to employ tricks like NY compression in order to get the drums to rock. There are a wide range of options and sounds with MODO, if "This one just doesn't sound that good to my ear" then there's something wrong with your ear. Seriously.

@@TerenceKearns I can make a beat with just my old Akai S612 sampler and a or other sequencer. I don't have to though because part of capitalism is that any product or service has to compete with other similar products and services. That's how business works. My ears work fine. To be fair I may have rushed my judgement as this video doesn't give the best showcase of the sound capabilities of MODO because from what I can tell it's not the best 'out the box' product.. It's the kind of sound software one should use to get a sound the way they want it. That's fine with me.
