I remember the first time I saw this. My parents called me and my little sister to the TV and told us to be quiet and watch. She is ELECTRIFYING! So much passion and energy. Such a rock and roller. No one performed like that and no one else ever will. RIP Tina Turner.

RIP Beautiful Tina Turner! When even old stiff tight Ed Sullivan can get seriously excited into the groove and soul with this performance telling the audience "come on everyone stand up and give them a loud applause!" you know this is an epic moment in history. Wish CBS let Ed have the show continue two more years after they cancelled it in the Spring 1971. Ed wanted to show go 25 years before retiring it on June 23, 1973.

Ed Sullivan has my respect. He was, like Sam Philipps, Elvis Presley and very fiew others, a pioneer in promoting black music in the 50´s. And that was a damn dangerous thing back then.

One year before their version of "Proud Mary" became a phenomenon in 1971. This landmark appearance set things in motion as their performance of "Bold Soul Sister" helped that single into the Top 30 on the R&B chart and the success eventually got them signed to Liberty records, when things really began heating up for them. One of the greatest videos in the Sullivan archives.

Ike and Tina had been on the Rand B charts since the very early 60's with their single It's Gonna Work Out Fine. They opened for the Rolling Stones in the USA on the Stones 69 tour. That's where they made their real crossover and got them on Sullivan. I saw them in 67 and they were one of the hottest acts i've ever seen.

But I was focusing on the events of 1970 that began in January with this Ed Sullivan appearance and how the appearance resulted in their highest charting single in 8 years, which led to a contract with Liberty records, which led to massive mainstream success.

One of the greatest, a legend, the queen, simply the best... All this has been said about Tina, but I think we perhaps forgot the adjective that best defined her of all: a survivor. She was reborn several times from her own ashes, both artistically and personally, to accompany us for more than five decades and be part of the sentimental memory of several generations. When a figure of that caliber leaves us, something also dies inside each one... Fortunately, as always, all the incredible music remains, her voice, her dances, her long hair, her energy, her power, her long legs and all the icons that she created throughout his career, to keep her memory and continue to feel that she is still there. 🙏

Elvis Presley was a big fan of her as well. They also had in common is that they did music that Phil Spector worked on. River Deep, Mountain High and You've Lost That Loving Feeling. Nicola Roberts in 2002 sang River Deep Mountain High and on November 30th won a spot in a New Girl Group that became superstars in The UK called Girls Aloud. When I watch and listen to someone like Tina Turner or Etta James then I watch the likes of Beyonce, you quickly realise that the Sixties was a very special time and unique time for Soul singers and that modern day singers lack that same aspect of "Soul" in their voice & performance. For instance...James Brown compared to Bruno Mars..or Marvin Gaye compared to John Legend..there is such a HUGE difference. I don't think we will ever get that back. It belongs to that era and can never be replicated.

It looks like Tina was actually singing, but the band was faking it, while playing to a recorded rhythm track. You can see Ike's guitar isn't even plugged in when he immediately comes over to Ed.

Ike looks so thin frail and harmless so it’s hard to believe he would put Tina through domestic abuse but he did and the funny thing is she’s the main musician as he didn’t do much put play an instrument. Perhaps he made the song and her job was to sing it? I don’t know much about them other than it’s been long since reported that he’d beat her and she put up with it for a while or that he died and so she was spared any more abuse. For whatever reason in her senior years Tina became a citizen of Holland or one of those countries so she’s done with the USA. I wonder why she did that?

Nice - Tina married Erwin Bach. He was European and they wanted to live in Switzerland. Erwin is the one of the producers that got Tina's solo career off the ground when she left Ike. When the pair first met, Bach was a label executive at the European branch of Turner’s record label, EMI. During his time in the business, he worked with acts such as Queen, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, and Radiohead as the managing director of EMI Recorded Music Switzerland.
