So nice to see someone doing what feels like a realistic makeover. It’s not all about expensive brands and endless contractors and is very achievable. Good for you both being willing to get stuck in and doing what you can yourselves.

I prefer the white cables personally, blends more seemlessly with the wall colour! And then use a few cable clips (I think that's what they're called) so that the cables lay flat against the wall and in a straight line

For the side lamp cables I would paint them the same color as the wall (if the paint sticks) that way it matches and doesn't stand out like a sore thumb, the black cord just looks a bit tacky to me and draws too much attention to the fact that it's not wired into the wall. That's just a personal preference though so if you like the darker cords then do whatever you like! I love the shape of your main light but it just seems a bit low and imposing on the headspace, especially since you and Simon are both on the taller side so even though esthetically I like it better than the old one I like that the old one didn't have a drop. Love how it's all coming together though and secretly hope that you went with railings for the doggy steps just to bring that color in somewhere else in the room cause I love it!

It’s quite easy to make a cord cover, you can even use hot glue or sticky backed velcro if you don’t sew, just find fabric to match your wall (or paint simple canvas) and make strips wide enough to wrap around. So simple and it would make all this thoughtful work you’re doing look more finished. Or they have products that cover the cord and attach to the wall that you can paint. It all looks great. Not sure about the oatmeal felt, maybe the color is skewed on video, it looks too warm for the rest of the room. (I’m a ginger and LOVE warm colors, but it sticks out a LOT in an unlovely way in your lovely cool toned room.)

Looking Good, Guys! Loving the changes. For some of my chandeliers and cords I sewed, for lack of better word, cord socks. I used linen in neutral color that blended in with the wall or ceiling. Cut narrow strip (just wide enough to fit the plug end thru when fabric is folded and sewed)of fabric about 3 times in length as the exposed cord (so it will gather up nice and stay in place). Fold lengthwise right sides together and sew the seam leaving ends open. Turn the tube right side out and feed the cord through. It takes a cord or chain you’re not thrilled with seeing and makes it kind of disappear in a nice finished way. Course, sometimes cords are cool, like the retro cloth covered wire,,,,and those you want to see. Anyway,,,can’t wait for next episode!
@treeflan5682
@treeflan5682 4 жыл бұрын
Emma, to hide the cords for the lights over the bedside tables, you might want to think about either taking a piece of trim painting it black, white (to match the ones on the ceiling) or staining it the same color as the bed and tacking it to the wall over the length of the cord running down the wall. Another idea is to hide the cord by running it behind the wall down the wall pulling it out just above the electrical socket and then plugging it in. The point at which the cord goes into the wall and comes back out you can put two circular plastic pieces to guide the cord in and back out. Of course if you use this idea you're going to have to drill into the wall.🥴 on the doggie stairs you might want to stain it the same color as your bed so it looks like part of your bedroom set. The room is really coming together❣️💕

My only suggestion is to use “painters tape” which will not pull off the paint and remove cleanly, whereas “masking tape” sticks and leaves a residue because the adhesive formulation is different.

Lookin good, very serene. There are light cord covers you can buy, there's hard plastic one, that if you paint same colour as wall they blend in, there's also a fabric kind that look like scrunches...not sure that would be your vibe. I'm on the side of having them disappear as much as possible. I like how you and Simon plan and execute a project, very step by step and very doable by the average homeowner. I especially like how you see it through to the finish line!

Loving the diy renovations can’t wait for the next ones... idea for the cords on the wall lamps from Ikea, if you were going to switch the cords out you could try a braided cord they tend to be more decorative so if it’s on show it can add texture and won’t matter so much...

The room is looking so good! Just shows what a bit of hard work imagination and a few little changes can achieve. Dark furniture seems to be a big trend for 2020, not that’s why you’re doing it but just so happens to be in vogue and looks nice and modern. Coving is a 🤬 to paint. Like you say you paint the coving, then paint the wall and ultimately some of that paint gets back on the coving and thus the never ending “touch up” cycle begins 🙈. Love the covered shoe area, will keep the light and dust from gathering. X

Looks lovely 😊 , but just to remember for your next renno .... do all stripping / sanding first on everything that needs it . , walls , doors , cupboards,wardrobes etc . Then in your room , work top to bottom . ... so.. 1. paint ceiling , in as many coats as required . doesn't matter if goes on walls then. . 2 cut in top edges of walls to ceiling with chosen wall colour . & cut in internal corners of walls . Around windows , doors . 3 Then roll all rest of walls to the bottom . Doesn't matter if wall paint goes on skirting board as you will do that last . Repeat for 2nd time/coat 4 undercoat all woodwork .... so skirting , doors, architraves, wardrobes, .. (cutting in to Ceiling edge ) window sills . - usually 2 coats 5 top coat all woodwork , as above . Lie back and admire ! Love your hack on lights , I like the lead black , but a cable rope type would look amazing . Use tin foil next time instead of masking tape as it's very malunable for wrapping and tucking into nooks and crannies and much easier to take off after you have sprayed with paint. Love love love ❤️ xx

Love the renovations to the room! I am also a "spray paint queen". I too have wall lamps with an exposed cord. I used a small brush and painted them the wall color to blend in (or disappear) in to the wall color (used two coats). It worked well and didn't make the cord "sticky". Can't wait to see the room with the blinds and everything on the wall. Love the changes to the shoe area!

LOOKING GOOD!!! There you are, sitting under the dome light - that may or may not come down, you are very brave!!! I have similar wall lights, that are not hard-wired. I know you have moved, but thought I would add a tip here for anyone else that has these lights. Use a hair dryer to un-kink the cable. The cable will never be heavy enough to ease out the kinks on its own. Those lights are becoming more and more popular, so thought it might help any subscriber who has just bought some. I suspect a weight can also be tied on the end of the cable where it hangs above the ground, just to stretch cable a bit.

Well Emma, I have never seen someone so chicly dressed to paint....matching T Shirt to go with it! You've done a terrific job thus far. Isn't it therapeutic though? To stand back and look at your hard work is so satisfying. Love it! Oh, and one small tip with the bedroom curtains: you could consider getting a couple of hooks that are fitted on the wall about half way down to prop the curtains back. It 'lifts' them considerably and you probably wouldn't need to turn them up as a result.....just a thought. I used to tie a loose knot in mine so I didn't need to get them altered.

There is a little half tube ( like 1/2 of a straw) that is adhesive and rigid that you run from your side lamps to the floor, then you paint it the color of your wall. That makes your cord disappear. All you see is a small straight line the color of your wall. Check for it at your light store.

Before you shorten those curtains, wash and dry them. They shrink like mad! Also you can buy a cord cover that you paint the same colour as the wall and the bedside lamp cords disappear.

Hi Emma - not sure if you decided to cut off your long window curtains? If not, at one time, I had a pair and didn't want to cut them so I could decide what to do - so "puddled" them on the floor, to see if I liked the look - and left them that way - if you type window curtain puddle into google - you'll get lots of images of how it can look. just a thought?

You should put in some lights under the shelves where your shoes are 😍💡

Kudos for the DIY, it takes a lot of patience and dedication to doing things on your own. You mentioned you bought an ikea picture frame to match the color of the furniture, but I would suggest getting a brass or black frame to pull from the materials of the lights by the bed. Otherwise, it will be too much wood and it will look matchy-matchy. The plant you have in the corner looks out of proportion there. I don’t know if it’s real or fake, but I’d recommend a taller plant. Love the curtains for the shoe shelving, it creates texture. The wardrobe is just amazing, it makes your bedroom. I suggest you use the same color from the wardrobe for the bedding, so it all ties in together. Right now the wardrobe is not really speaking to the rest of the room. The bedding in a similar color will tie it in. I’ve seen linen bedding in beautiful bluish gray colors like the wardrobe, or you can buy creamy oatmeal bedding but have a nice blanket at the foot of the bed and decorative pillow same as wardrobe color. Can’t wait to see it all finished.

Yes I was thinking the same for the bedding and did buy some but it didn't fit correctly 🤷‍♀️ so still on the search. But I love that plant so it won't be going anywhere 🤣 but it is real so it will grow into the room ❤️

No point trying to disguise cables, they nearly always look worse. Make them a feature. It would be easy to change the cable for some silk covered braided flex, it's available in dozens of colours, maybe an old gold or bronze would look good. It would look more in keeping with the period look of your home and in particular the light fittings themselves.

Emma, LOVE your DIY! So rewarding, isn’t it? I understand your concern on the lamp wires. I have an problem with wires showing at my house too. They have a wire cover you can pick up at a Home Depot type place. You can actually paint it. Or you can just paint the wire itself in the same color of your wall paint so that it disappears (as best it can). Stretch it a bit to take out the kinks before you paint it. Good luck!

For the lamp cables, I'd keep them black (so it matches the curtain rail etc.) but I'd get some cloth (?) ones and changed them up. Just my preference, they have a bit more texture so it looks nicer.

Yes someone else mentioned cloth cables (if that's what they are called) so am going to have a look and see if I can find some as I like the idea. 👍

I think the cords do look nice black on the wall sconces, maybe painting the rest w black caulk paint that isn't sticky would be a happy compromise, so you don't have to re-wire?

🤞 It has done so far. When we first put it up the screw kept chipping the glass rim and it fell down (luckily Simon was still standing under it and caught it 🙈) but then we were told to twist it as we tightened the screws and that seems to have done the trick 🤞

I did something very similar with the wall lamps, and rewired it with the cord cable (like you get on a iron) that way it looks good with the wire showing 😁

Emma you just need to pop the lamp in a plastic bag and just tape it too the very beginning of the plastic bag and lamp .... so less fiddly and easier to remove than all the masking tape
