Hi Ian and Chris, it's been years since I've been down in the crater it's definitely more overgrown now it felt cold,eerie everywhere calm, no birds chirping strange feeling did you notice it, plus the strange thing was i took pictures and not one come out from inside the crater?

I think the brass chisel thing is cover up. Brass tools are used in petrol refineries, for the very good reason that they DON'T spark. It is possible that someone removing an impact detonator from a bomb with a brass chisel could have triggered the detonator, (especially as I saw from some notes that bombs from crashed planes were being recycled). I just don't believe that a simple spark could trigger a bomb, cordite, or black powder in an open container could be, but that does not seem likely.

They have it wrong in the video as they should know brass does not spark. It was the act of bringing recovered bombs into the store and bashing out the live fuze that set the place off.

Ah, the remains of RAF Fauld: an underground munitions store. The site of one of the largest non-nuclear explosions ever. The blast destroyed a farm, a cement works, and a reservoir. The brass chisel thing? It's rubbish. Brass is used in places like this because it DOES NOT cause sparks, being non-ferrous. Brass is used extensively in the petro-chemical industry for this reason. It was known that the working methods here were often slipshod, with not enough attention being paid to safety. Some chambers did survive, but I'm sure they were backfilled after the war.

When I served in Singapore in the 70s, one of my tasks was picking up ammo form the British ammo dumps, all underground with vehicle access, I always was wondering if it blow up. 13:04

Interesting watch, I walked around the edge of the crater a few years ago. The size of it is difficult to comprehend. Even more difficult is the fact that there was a farm on the site that just completely vanished, buildings, occupants and livestock all consumed. For more background I would highly recommend Nick McCamleys book "Disasters Underground" It describes the accident in a lot of detail as well as examining the whole flawed strategy of underground ammunition storage.

I read it in an article that a soldier saw the Italian pow in the area just before the explosion And saw him using the metal chisel instead of the wooden one that was meant to be used to remove the blasting mechanism from a recovered unexploded bomb And this is what set of the first of two explosion And he didn't say anything to the pow as he was essentially only a civilian And that is apparently why he didn't report it to anyone at the time

Look at your older videos compared to now. Look at the ones that have VIEWS compared to now. Nobody is forcing you to do this. You seem to do this for fun, so if you would like a fanbase. Maybe stop attacking them? Listen to the ones that have been here for years? Or will you chase them all away under the pretense of "trolls"? No back story, presuming people know where you are and what took place there? Bad film. So, I'll do it for you. At 11.11am on Monday, 27 November 1944, a mushroom cloud, 50 yards wide, rose high above the village of Hanbury, Staffordshire. Mounds of earth, weighing up to a ton each, fell to the ground after being lifted skywards. A nearby reservoir that had contained six million gallons of water was burst open. And a massive crater - 100 feet deep and 250 yards wide - was blasted into the unspoiled landscape. This lasting scar, the Hanbury Crater, is a reminder of when the 4,000 tonnes of bombs and ammunition kept in the underground storerooms of RAF Fauld, Staffordshire, detonated in a single, deadly moment. The exact death toll is uncertain; it is believed that about 70 people died in the explosion. The cause of the disaster was not made clear at the time. However, there had been staff shortages, a management position that had remained empty for a year, and 189 inexperienced Italian POWs were working in the mines at the time of the accident. In 1974, it was announced that the cause of the explosion was probably a site worker removing a detonator from a live bomb using a brass chisel rather than a wooden batten. An eyewitness testified that he had seen a worker using brass chisels in defiance of the strict regulations in force. You're welcome.
