A B-17 Combat Wing is attacked by Roberth, Darky and Skorzy while on its way to target and back.
This was filmed in multiplayer, since such attacks are not possible with AI. I was in two different B-17s while Darky, Roberth and Skorzy attacked in german fighters. I later added voice overs from eight different people and a lot of sound effects to make it sound authentic.
German attacks and other interesting moments, "R" indicates an attack by Roberth, "S" means Skorzy and "D" stands for Darky:

This shows how difficult it was for a human gunner to shoot down a fighter. However, the AI gunners with their "computerized" aiming have phenomenal accuracy in this game.

@h0ust0n Debatable, depends on the time period. The USAAF had surprisingly bad gunnery training for their men until late 1943. If you listen to what Curtis LeMay says in 1943, most of the gunners were badly trained, with only some experience on .30 cal guns on stationary platforms, shooting against moving cardboard targets. Many veterans from 1942/43 will also state their training was completely inadequate. It remained relatively inadequate until late 1943. If you youtube that cartoon training video for US bomber gunners, that was actually the first time that kind of detailed training was passed on to the men (cartoon is dated 1944). It was largely due to the work of one specific American who rewrote the gunnery training for US gunner after he saw it was of a low standard.
@colinkelly5420
@colinkelly5420 5 жыл бұрын
@h0ust0n Agreed that gunners can't adaquately protect a formation, but at the very least better trained gunners can increase the attrition on the enemy. The thing is, aerial gunnery can be counter intuitive at times. Since you are on a moving aircraft, and the enemy aircraft is moving as well, there is much more to hitting a target then just aiming in front of him. In fact, depending on the direction the bomber and enemy fighter are flying in comparison to eachother, at times you actually have to aim BEHIND the moving fighter for your bullets to converge on them, rather then in front which is what you'd think. The early US training for their gunners was horribly inadaquate, which is weird because so much faith was placed in the defensive firepower of the bombers to keep casualties to a bearable level.

Surviving a bombing run on a German target was 50/50. As you would experience flak upon approaching the target or Bf-109s flying past taking many of your combat wing down. Many times a friendly bomber would collide with another on the way down to the ground. World War II movies don’t show much of bombing runs in B-17s or B-24s. Which is sad because of how many bombers never return from missions. An officer would have a clipboard and pencil tallying how many bombers left and returned. My grandfather was apart of a B-17 combat wing in World War II and said the flak was terrifying to see around his position as bombardier. And not to mention the Bf-109s intercepting the formation. His best friend was shot down in the B-17 just above his and watched it go down in flames and no parachutes were spotted.

Your ship sir is 303rd BG 358th Sq VK A, her name was Skywolf and she was lost on Jan 11 44 over Oshersleben Germany/as lead ship. How do I know this? Because Don Delaura(Lead Bombardier) bailed out of it and I knew him. Thanks for makin her live once again.
@Fishyyy
@Fishyyy 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry to tell you, but there are no accurately marked aircraft in this mission, I created "generic" 303rd skins marked with A, B and C and just added an available tail number. Filming was done from five different B-17s by the way. However, I did make a video with the historically accurate Skywolf in it. It's a recreation of a Bremen raid that Skywolf actually was part of and Skywolf even is in the correct place in the formation. Skywolf was part of the high squadron, it's the fourth B-17 from the right at 47:00 kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2G9aZJ6qpl-bq8 It's hard to explain with text, but you can check out where the aircraft was in the formation in the mission report on the 303rd website. It's the aircraft piloted by Carl Morales. www.303rdbg.com/missionreports/031.pdf However apparently Don Delaura wasn't on that mission.
@warrenchambers4819
@warrenchambers4819 5 жыл бұрын
Have I got a story for you. On January 11 1944 right before taxiing out for assembly Don was switched from William Dashiell's crew to Morales crew as he was picked at the last minute to be lead bombardier. As I can tell you are a man who does his research (I admire that) and if you look at William Dashiell's crew photo you'll notice George Morrison and Don Delaura both are not listed as KIA but we know that crew was lost in an unnamed B-17 on the Oshersleben mission, well that means both those men were not with Dashiell that day. So where were they? George Morrison was not on flight status due to prior wounding although he did plead with the doc to clear him to go. And as I stated before Don was switched before take off. I knew both these men. George was a high school teacher of mine and we became great friends. Sadly I only found Don 6 months after George passed. You see George didn't know Don was switched and therefore never knew he'd lived. And it is for this reason I have an affinity for Skywolf. I'll ck out your other video now and comment more of this amazing story. Oh one more thing Ck out "The molesworth pilot here www.google.com/url?q=www.303rdbg.com/news/2011-07-17 George was discovered to have written that letter. In the book "Three engines 1/2 wing and a Prayer" the writer mentions this letter but did not know the author at the time. Funny thing is I know for a fact the author of it George read that book but didn't mention it(He did have many nightmares while reading it, I even tried to take it back to which he flatly refused. I felt bad that I'd stirred up painful memories for him.)

those were young men fighting for there country too, they were humans as was the bomber crew. so stop with this nonsense. have some respect for your enemy to, cause to be quite frank FDR allowed the US to get attacked to join the war and those are facts, he embargoed the japanese cause he knew they would attack, they lacked oil and other fine war materials they had no other options; were they looking to militarialy expand, yes, but they didnt want a fight with america, america wanted one;FDR was a cock sucker, he was blowing churchhill. just as did woodrow wilson ship arms to the british via the lusitania, america wasnt and never has been for the just war.

Awesome video as per! Really enjoying these B-17 vids lately. Nostalgic in a way, some years ago I was lucky enough to go up in one with a couple of veterans. I became good friends with one and he passed recently. Few different reactions though. I offered to pay for a vet to come with me and he laughed (in a good way) said I'd need to pay him double just to get in it, let alone fly in it. When I found out what he went through, and my own story, we became good friends and stayed in regular touch until his passing. I actually prefer the B-24 but that's just my own op.

Why are there no B-17 G's? You know, the ones with the chin turret with twin .50 cal machine guns? Still, a very nice production. My Dad's younger Brother, Lt. Vergene W. Ford was an aircraft commander (lead pilot) in the Mighty Eighth. He did 35 missions without a scratch. His group went over there with 25 planes and crews; 7 crews survived the war. Heroes, all of these young men. Some 46,000 perished in the skies over Germany and Europe, in battlefields 5-6 miles up. Think about that for a minute or two; they had a worse casualty rate than the Marines on Iwo Jima.

In gunnery school the gunners were taught to lead the target, not to fire at it, but in front of it. They later developed a technique of aiming even further ahead of the target, creating a wall of bullets the target would run into. Not firing at, or leading, just fire an extended burst at where the target was gonna be “in just a moment.”

Actually they sometimes had to shoot behind the attacking plane depending on the direction and angle of the attack. There is a good wartime training video for aerial gunners on you tube that goes into detail about the firing solutions they had to work out.

Wow, can anybody tell me how I can fly in a mission like this please? I have IL2 1946 with the complete BAT modifications but I can’t find any B-17 missions to fly. Grateful for any help please.

Can someone tell me how to get a flyable B-17 in IL-2 that will work in Virtual Reality? I have IL-2 Strumovik 1946 installed on my computer and also in my Steam library. I do not see a flyable B-17 or any missions for B-17s. Help would we greatly appreciated.

I feel the game B-17 the Mighty 8th nails it better than this but I could never get the glitches out of it. For example you'd play a long mission and it would CTD. After a half ddozen times of this I gave up on it but the quick missions were fun until I got sick of them also. I love shooting down other B-17s - S-L-O-W-L-Y. Watching engines fail, pieces flying off and planes falling behind was very satisfying. When playing a mission seeing this happen by the enemy was a bit sickening I have to admit. You take it personally - go figure; I derive a morbid thrill from shooting down a B-17 from the ball turret but get maddened and sad when the enemy does it (evn though it is just a fucking game lol).

What would happen to bombers hit so hard they were combat ineffective but still able to fly? Where they allowed to try and rtb or were they forced to push on and try drop their payload?
@jefftheriault7260
@jefftheriault7260 5 жыл бұрын
If you couldn't stay with the formation...normally, it was jettison and go, some times at very low level.
@kole2993
@kole2993 5 жыл бұрын
If they didn't have enough engine power they would jettison their payload and try and stay with the formation. It was pretty much always a bad idea to stray from the formation as you'd be an easy target. It really depends on where they were if they would actually leave the formation and rtb. Otherwise if they couldn't keep up even with dropping their payload it's likely they can't keep altitude anyway so they would just bail out.

@Fishyyy

The characters were talking about one of the three boxes of the whole combat wing, not one of the three squadrons of one box. High squadron means the high part of one box and high group means one of the three boxes of the whole wing. My terminology is correct in that case. While I don't have prove ready at hand, I am basically sure that somebody called a B-17 a "Seventeen" at some point. Preplanned terminology and stuff like it is among the first things that fly out the window when shit hits the fan anyway. A rear gunner saying "left" or "right" instead of "nine o'clock" or "three o'clock" is absolutely in the realm of possibilities. They did call bombers ships, but I don't know why you would point that out, nobody said aircraft or plane at any point. On the contrary, my pilot says: "your ship" in one line.
