I've been fortunate enough in my life to see the Hungarian state opera do IL travatore and Verdi's requiem. Apart from being some of the cheapest tickets I've ever seen, I'd recommend it for two more reasons. 1. They're amazingly good. 2. Budapest might be the only place I've ever been where everyone regardless of income showed up in the best closed that they had and just supported the music. Bonus reason 3. As a tourist I'd had other plans beforehand, but booked tickets to the state opera doing Requiem on the day of the dead. I arrived at my hotel 29 minutes before start. The hotel, taxi drivers, police, and even the state opera house staff, made sure that I missed nothing... who says that Budapest doesn't like tourists,?
