Awesome analysis. Thanks for giving the carnatic notes for the raaga and differentiating the raagas and also singing the song itself a bit eith the notes. இளம்சோலை பூத்ததா மற்றும் வானவில்லே வானவில்லே இருபாடலும் இளையராஜாவின் கைவண்ணத்தில் தர்மாவதி ராகத்தில் அமைந்த அற்புதமான பாடல்கள். அது போல விஸ்வநாதன் அவர்களது இசையில் காதல் காதல் என்று பேச கண்ணன் வந்தானோ மற்றும் அம்மானை அழகுமிகு கண்மானை பாடல்களும் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடிக்கும்.

As usual Good Topic and one that I have pondered a lot over the years 1. This Raga be it Madhuvanti or Dharmavathi both evoke a “ longing “ feeling - now the longing can be for physical , non physical ( spiritual ) .. Meendum Meendum , Ennulil engo are examples of longing for the physical . 2. The Gayathri song actually gives an eerie feel and the feel for “ longing for freedom” is what I get. Sridevi gets stuck in that house and cannot escape and the lyrics not only laments about her situation but also has a layer of longing for freedom 3. There are a few other songs ( I am sure there are many more as Raja air’s volume of work is so HUGE that it takes a lot of work to bring out - some of the hidden gems are what I always treasure - one is “ VaanaVille VaanaVille” song. From Ramana movie. Where the hero is longing for the good old days. This is also classic dharmavathy 4. Another song but set in Hindholam but still beautifully brings out the longing ( in this case the young girls are expressing their longing for their mate) is “ Ooradangum Samathile “ from the movie puthupatti ponnu thaayi. What a mesmerizing song ( Flute all the way - I am sure it is Arunmozhi ) Very similar one is the song “ Karutha machan” song from PNPN. The heroine is longing to get married to her lover The song “Etho Ninaivugal” from Agal Vizhakku expresses the “longing” for the past love We can dig more 🙏

My fav Dharmavathi is “Kaadhal Kaadhal endru pesa” from Utharavindri Ulle vaa. Probably the first song in Dharmavathi in film music (haven’t heard anything in this raga before that)

Very good explanation hope none of us can forget an old melody kadal kadal endru pesa kaannan vanthano from old film uthravendri ulley vaa I think that is also the same raga

As far as I know, Kaadhal Kaadhal endru pesa was the first Dharmavathi in film music. PS Amma is just sublime in it. One of my all time favs.
