I was there that night and she sang wonderfully. The conductor was her husband Manfred Ramin with the São Carlos Theater orchestra. She also sang "Quel guardo il cavalier" (Don Pasquale) and an aria from I Guarany (by the brasilian composer Carlos Gomes). She ended that concert with a rendition of "Pace, pace, mio Dio" (Forza del Destino) and although much applaused, no encores were given.

@MrSwifts31 Violetta is lower but also requires coloratura. This actually is still in her Fach. Trust me, this is not painful at all comparing her to the modern prima.. hm lets say modern well know "operatic" singers.

Violett is in fact lower but only requires some coloratura ability at the end of the 1. act in "Sempre libera deggio".

OK - Round 1 of the Cabaletta was not so hot, but her second attempt nailed it. Yeah - she's not a coloratura, but it's a lovely lyric voice with nice big high notes. To my ear - it sounded like the conductor was just a bit fast for her - but still not bad and it's nice to hear this sung by such a gorgeous voice.

Actually there is much that is beautiful in the aria. She sang this role at Covent Garden , but perhaps it came too late in her career - rather like Constanza in The Seraglio. Such an artist.

I admire and have always admired Ctrubas.She was the greatest Mimi & Vilotta I have ever seen. Sadly though,one thing she was not is a coloratura soprano,and this clip is painful. Why can't singers keep to their fach.In case you are woncdering I DID hear her sing this at Covent Garden and it just wasn't right for her voice.

A true lyric soprano with a little bit of coloratura facility and a littlebit of dramatic power. Nice try but she couldn't ornament the coda with enough variety to be interesting. However, she always had a lovely sound.

She described herself and her voice as "une personnalité lyrique et voix lyrique avec des possibilités légères" in an interview to Jorge Rodrigues in Lisbon. There is also a very interesting interview to August Everding in Da Capo where she expresses her view on opera today (back in 1991), but only in german.

Any critic that that takes a singer to task with shoddy grammar should answer to the rest of us for the lack of perfection they expect in singers. A critic provides nothing more than narcissistic pomposity.

She's a poorly trained soprano who sang a hole into the middle of her voice. I saw her around this time at Covent Garden in Traviata. She conveyed a fragility in the final act that was effective and she still had a nice top voice, but the rest of her voice was in tatters, as it is here.

"A poorly trained soprano" could never have had a career like she has had. Numerous operas, concerts, religious performances and recordings with other top artists are included in her resume. Every singer's voice shows some deterioration after many years of use. The voice wears out just like everything else. Ileana Cotrubas is no exception. She was older when this video was recorded and her voice does not sound like it did when she was in her twenties and thirties. Give the lady a break.

​@garysmith394 :: You don't get it, do you ?! This music, singing is the greatest in this world ; opera singers have the greatest vocal instruments in this world ; opera has existed for over 400yrs. There can be no mistakes❕️The castratri and the great female singers, ( Angelica Catalani ) have left a tremendous legacy of singing. No one today can stand next to them on any stage ... so when singers, take extremely deep, audible breaths before _Sempre libera,_ we have a right to be super-critical. The deeply audible breath sets the tone for the aria. I am just partially serious [ singers are wonderfully human ] but, _this soprano_ should have called in her understudy before exposure of her lack of breath-control. It happened at the beginning of the aria. It was hard-solid to forget it was very shocking. I was not going to type any criticism about this singer ... but she is still on a roll these many years later ...

I have always liked the sound of this woman's voice.. and I still do. This however sounds like she is running out of breathe in the whole piece.

You are correct, and I was puzzled as to why she continued to go for Ebs that were clearly not really in the voice. I once had a conversation with a Asian soprano that was a friend of Cotrubas, and told her that I didn't think Ileana should be singing coloratura roles. Cotrubas was top caliber lyric/spinto, and should have stuck with that.

Very sweet in the aria, but pretty rock in the cabaletta. Good try for a nice lady, but big problems in the lower regions -- very bumpy getting into and out of it and the register breaks.

Cortrubas was a lovely singer, but this was not a role for her. Perhaps in concert excerpts, such as here, but with modest effect. Like all of Bellini's great heroines, the character is assigned great lyrical declamation supplemented with virtuosic expression. She has the former but not the latter. Even so, she's still head and shoulders above most sopranos today.

Insomma..e' partita bene ma poi a meta' dell'aria....la cabaletta invece non era pane per i suoi denti e fare versioni "malibrandesche" poi per aggirare l'ostacolo....comunque il risultato e' triste perche' la Cotrubas ha un tipo di canto e timbro "tristi".
