I was a teenager when I first discovered La Boheme. In the years that followed, I listened to many, many of recordings of it and heard dozens of interpretations of this aria. Finally, when I got to Ileana's version, I thought "THIS is Mimi." For me at least, she is the one who completely checks off all the boxes emotionally, musically, technically, dramatically, etc. I've listened to it at least 200 times, and every time her voice crescendos into "Il primo bacio dell'aprile è mio!" I get the same chills.

We saw her 2-3 times a week when students in Vienna in the late 70s and early 80s at the Staatsoper !! - Mimi, Gilda, Violetta, Adina, etc. She was so perfect, her voice was soooo beautiful ❤

Erfreulicherweise besinnt man sich offenbar wieder, welche große Künstlerin die Cotrubas ist, weil im Rausch der Netrebko-Jahre diese Qualität verloren ging und viele einer vollkommen überbewerteten russischen Sopranistin auf den Leim gingen. Das hat offenbar jetzt ein Ende gefunden, was ich nur begrüßen kann.

Hay que ver la pureza de la música y del canto de las cuatro barras es difícil expresar tanta ternura y belleza en una canción tan hermosa Puccini imitaba bastante a Wagner en el sentido de que no tenía por qué un área tener dos o tres temas bien diferenciados hay quien dice que aquí no los hay está muy claro que los hay en la primera parte es como una especie de recitativo pero que no lo es bien bien porque es francamente maravilloso pero amigos cuando se levanta de las sillas la controlas está bien claro que es otro tema muy diferente y tan maravilloso que casi se puede considerar algo divino es una verdadera maravilla que muchos directores de escena no tengan en cuenta este detalle que al levantarse se inicia el segundo tema tan maravilloso que uno se queda anonadado bien y no es ya el bel canto si no es verismo presten atención porque es una maravilla

She came to the Met 1977 always late a bring his great European artists has song and every Opera House in Europe the great Opera Houses. Covent Garden Paris Vienna she spoke seven languages excellent diction very underrated in America. My daughter and I bought her Traviata and vinyl the rest was history. My daughter would follow her and see what she was singing all the time finally caught her at the Met I believe it was 1979 doing La Boheme. It's a great time Great opera singers knew who she was and admired her for it that Dusky soprano beautiful top voice but that childlike quality so telling and true to the music. Check her out you will fall in love with her voice. The purest form lyric soprano voice I ever heard Etc.

Arnold Amaral just in terms of lyrical soprano timbre Barbara Bonney will kick her out of the park any day of the week. I actually consider her to be highly overrated. But if she’s the first singer you’ll ever hear I can see how you would love her. She does have a pretty timbre in comparison to the typical darker operatic voice and her techniques, while not the best (breath control issues that she masks well), are very good.
