"This sounds like 'Down by the River'" That's deliberate. A lot of the songs have the same foundational melody, it's in context to the original story of the game. It's not in it anymore, but the parasite in your brain used to commune with you "down by the river" in your dreams.

I think it's really neat you're avoiding Raphael's Final Act since you haven't gotten there yet! I did that as well despite hearing all the hype for so long (I was only able to get BG3 a few months ago), and it was totally worth it when I finally got there and got to experience it fresh. The whole area of the game where you experience the boss battle goes down as my favorite locale in BG3, and one of my favorites "levels" I've experienced in 30 years of gaming. It's something else. Crazy that's it's all totally optional.

Down by the River (and another one which is The Power) is tied to the game's original story before the developers changed it to what we have now. The original story was supposed to have a manifestation of the parasite that you carry from the start of the story communicate with you and tried to get you to let go and be with them down by the river (hence the song name). The song being so whimsy and peaceful is representative of the temptation to just give up and give in to the parasite's call and the ending to the song being really ominous is signifying the possible bad ending to that story where you truly let go and be forever lost.

IIRC Down by the River was originally chronicling the descent into the safe peaceful dream delusions of a mind being transformed into nothingness as the soul evaporated. Down by the river definitely my favorite personally and a streamer I watch called Nerissa ravencroft did a cover of it with the actual composer Boris slavov I think was his name doing the instrumental by the way this one is literally just the character creation music. From a musical perspective Raphael's final act is pretty peak but during this battle his character is literally singing it and if you were to kill him first his lines actually stop being sung and his lips and face are animated to the song.
