A waterproofing and reinforcement that works really well on plywood is the roll-on truck bed liner you can buy at the big box stores, plus it's usually black.

I was just about to say the same thing. Either the roll on, or potentially the spray on (since this is so small an area.)

Perfect! Long time subscriber, but you've actually solved a specific issue we want to solve with our Vehicle! We are on-location 2nd Unit Cinematographers, and so sometimes sleep in the Car on long night shoots - but we still need storage for camera gear etc. I'm basically going to make this, but a lot deeper (as our boot is deeper) - and instead of an empty tray in the top, it will have hinged Plywood that folds out, into the car - covering the collapsed back seats to make a bed! :D

I made something very similar to this a million years ago for my golf bag. Clubs on top. Shoes and other golf accessory bag underneath. Keeps the trunk so neat. Ahhh the good ol days when I kept my golf clubs in my trunk all year. Now I have teenagers and no longer have any free time for myself.

Snatch block! Aww farts, PAINT IT BLACK!! Lots of good moments in this one. Was really hoping that neoprene would work out. Could you add a backer material to stiffen it? Like a thin sheet of styrene or pvc sheet? Just something to give it shape and maybe even a handle to remove it like a drop in tray.

I've been wanting to make something like this to be able to have bags of groceries in there without them falling over when I turn the car slightly too fast. And also have a shelf above that area for other things, maybe with doors or something to keep things in place. I like the idea to use the metal to protect the wood and covering the shelf with something as well. Very nice!

great video! love seeing more work on the land crui...I mean truck. two recommendations for you: 1. you may want to put a bungie or something across the rear facing opening. imagine you're stopped on a hill and need to open the tailgate, everything would slide out. 2. for the top section, you could use a cargo net of some sort. the lip is pretty short and if you hit a bump just right anything on top could jostle around or fall out potentially. keep up the great work!

Awesome build Bob. 2 things tho. 1) Keep an eye on the hot melt. If it gets too hot in your vehicle it may start to separate. 2) Rustoleum makes roll-on bed liner. you could have used that to waterproof your tray. Keep making the cool stuff!
@charlesfe

Some hot glues can get pretty soft in a vehicle - not exactly melt, but also no longer hold. I built a bunch of wargaming terrain using hot glue to adhere MDF and styrofoam and the pieces separated when in the car for a couple hours.

Bob that turned out great. Might think about a way to secure the tools you put in the tray, hate to see them flying around. Also load your rescue/recovery on the right and First aid kit/emergency stuff on the left side. That way you remember Right is Rescue and Left is Life. BIG labels on the boxes help also.

I’m curious: what didn’t work with the old trunk storage/ what didn’t you like about it, and how did that inform your design for this organizer? I feel like this can happen to a lot of makers, where you make something and you don’t like it or it doesn’t quite do the job, but you don’t have a good idea of how to make it better so you just give up.

I noticed you placed heavy items on the top tray. Was that just for video purposes? If not I was wondering if you thought to add some straps to hold those items down too? bc as you mentioned if the truck tumbles you don’t want items flying. Love this idea for storage for the vehicles

Reminds me of a dock box/ roadie case. Only difference is you did not use the ABS-plywood laminate material. Looks really nice and efficient at keeping organized. You might want to glue some of that neoprene to the base of the storage unit as well as the sidewalls of it if you notice that the boxes rattle too much on the wood. For the tie down I would have added a second washer in top of the loop with a nylock nut to keep the bolt from spinning when you mount the box.

I now want to make something like this for my SUV and have it be pretty decent sized shelf so I can have an area to store jumper cables, another for groceries, and the top shelf to store a stroller. Last time I had a stroller in my car I was constantly either shoving groceries wherever I could fit them/balance on top of the stroller, or I'd have to wait until my husband could get to the store.

Suggestion, you should glue down some automotive carpet in the bottom shelves. It will prevent sliding and also your protect the paint from scratching. You could use speaker box fabric too. Oh for the top tray, you could remove the vinyl, seal the corners the use textured bed liner spray then make a carpet floor mat. Just some thoughts, great video!

If you make it removable it would be a really cool camping coffee table. Not to mention make cleaning easier and allows for extra space if you need it temporarily. You could probably make a wood insert that fits into the car's metal loop that prevents rotation and affix the bolt to that, then just use a couple wing nuts in the shelf floor.

High temperature hot glue/melt exists and would likely stand up to being in a vehicle interior without getting as soft as regular hot glue. As another commenter pointed out, low temp hot glue may not entirely melt at 150-200F, but it will defiantly start becoming a viscous fluid and lose most of its holding power. A closed car in 90-100 degree weather or in the sun can easily hit 160-170 in the interior.

Leave the neoprene sheet in the back, so it acts like a cover for the stuff in the back. Also that hot glue will pop off once you put some solvent in the back, so you probably want to go and use the proper adhesive to make sure it actually will hold the aluminium strips long term. Grippy mat on top also works wonders, and also helps on the tailgate so boxes do not slide if you are on a slope.

Interesting build. Where is your spare tire? I have a couple .50cal ammo boxes circa 1970’s, think Vietnam. One contains medical equipment and the other basic survival gear. Since my spare tire is accessed from inside the hatch I do not have the liberty to bolt it down. Consider gluing stiff wire or 1/4” rod in your neoprene sleeve to add rigid form. Alternatively, clear plastic angle strips could be cut and formed into an interior framework and glued or friction fit into the neoprene tray. These strips can be found in big box stores ; they are used to protect wallpaper on outer corners (mostly from children). It will reduce vibration noise while you are driving. My spousal unit is QUITE SENSITIVE to rattles and squeaks that I recognize and ignore.
