Since then I have modified it again to handle way more weight. It is a great concept to start with just needs the base modified to handle weight and roll easier.

For your organising wall two things come to mind: pegboards and French cleats. The latter was extensively used by both Paul Jackman and Frank Howarth in the past but of course required building a whole bunch of custom storage trays / boxes / shelves. You can also maybe combine both. In the recess there's maybe space for some enclosed area you could put some kind of door in. That said, just building a Clamp Champ Wall of Fame would also be quite cool ;)

I think it would be handy to have something on the wall to measure an off-cut when you grab it off the rack. Marking the edge would allow you to stand a board/sheet up and see if it will fit your current need.

A much needed tidy up for the shop! The cubby hole in the middle seems like a perfect place to put in some slide-out shelves/trays where you throw all the smaller offcuts into bins by rough size. This way you have most of your wood all in one go-to spot. As for the rest of the wall space, I'm also team french cleats, but perhaps try out some 3d printing for the tool/consumable holders. Would be an interesting segment if you could find existing designs by others, print them, try them out and try to iterate on them to make them yours.

I'd say drop by Ikea if you got one nearby and grab a few of the SKÅDIS hookboards and a half dozen bags of hooks then mount those to it. I did this with my model making table (using a PC gaming table with a frame ) but adding them to the back of the frame and hanging all my tools off it. Its pretty cheap and since the hooks arent fixed you can consantly re-adjust all the tools, plus make your own hooks if needed with 5mm bar for larger items (like big clamps etc). For the alcove, maybe build in small shelves on removable pegs (like a lot of furniture has) so you can store tapes, glue, brushes etc on it. I love storage items and this one rocks while staying essentially rather minimal in physical space. Well done, sir!

12:30 I think it would be cool if you added a table that folds out from the side so you can put pieces of wood down while your not using it at the moment so when you go to work on it, you don't have to worry about misplacing the wood that you need for that part of the project. And on the smaller section, you could put hooks on it to hang tool boxes or something like that. There are endless possibilities.

We build something similar for theatre workshops. We have to keep certain lengths. On the empty space I’d suggest do something for 3D printing like the paint, fillers, and anything use when you 3D print something. You should also 3D printing filler and sanding booth where it is connected to dust collection system.

In the notch you could hang some bars like a shower curtain rod look ( close at the top and further away toward the bottom) to hang long clamps on. I also use a plastic drywall mud pan screwed to the wall for my small tiny clamps. Thanks for the video.

the nook on the side is an obvious spot for some built in or adjustable shelving. looks like the perfect size for glue, paint, finishing supplies, gloves, rags, ect. especially if you combined that with a clamp wall on the larger surface, you would be grouping commonly used tools for similar tasks near each other.

Now I don't know if this is something you would want or need for that wall, but I personally would like a folding table or tray of some sort for storing loose stuff quickly. I would add a French cleat system. You can build a holder for just about anything, you can easily rearrange your shelves to Tetris more things onto the wall, and if in the future you replace/upgrade a tool you only need to replace one of the mounts. I saw one mount for a cordless sander with all its various sandpaper grits, anytime you need to sand something you just lift the mount off the cleats and carry the whole thing like a toolbox over to your project.

I made an A frame style cart on wheels, and can confirm: they are a disaster! This is so much smarter. 🙌 For that dead space in the middle: extension cords, longer rulers and levels, garden tools even. Or get all your fasteners organized on a French cleat system, or all the handheld tools for that matter. Or park the pack outs in the deepest section when they are in the garage.

100% on the french cleats. Jonathan katz moses has some nice simple clamp hangers. They are 8 to 10 inches deep so the wall space used is much more efficient

Great build and video as always. For the sides, I know this has been said - French cleats. When you first were taking about putting sides for organization, I thought you were going to put up peg boards. Reading some of the comments, there's definitely support for both French cleats and peg boards. My thought is - how effective would it be to combine both. Have peg boards with French cleats as well. Hang the cleats on the peg board for maximum modularity.

I would suggest adding French cleats to the side of the storage unit. Then you can make swappable holders, etc for things you might use often or just easily take stuff off if you don't like the placement.

I'd put in a bunch of french cleats with shelves in mind for the U shaped cavity. Depending on what's in the room, I'd put in some cut 4" PVC to hold weird stuff you can't put in the 'stick storage', like trim, conduit, anything long thing and flexible you have left over, but can't put in with the wood.

Great video, couple of notes; The first joints you showcased could've been made far stronger and cheaper by using a half-lap glued joint, eliminating expensive screws and creating a joint stronger than the pocket screws could ever be. A dado set or some time on the table saw would easily facilitate such a joint. Melamine is not quite what you described, it's actually just the plastic coating on what we call chip-board or a well known brand name for the substrate is K-3. Melamine can be a coating on many substrates, I use melamine on 19mm and 16mm plywood for cabinet manufacturing. A simple rail for clamps is what we use in our shop, clamp the clamp to the rail. For bar clamps, holes that enter a vertical cavity about 24" in height can hold the clamp upright safely. Though extra weight needs to be considered as bar clamps are quite heavy.

How about a simple panel cutter to break down the sheet goods right there? A narrow shelf to hold the sheet against the side, and some sort of cutting guide. The guide could just hook over a rail at the top, and self align. For lengthwise cuts, clamp a guide in place.

I would say, considering what I've seen you use the most either french cleats or pegboard. Mostly because it can be reconfigurable. If you want to go advanced, you could CNC some fancier pegboards, more like the system used for Ikea's pegboard system, and be able to make custom hangers for things, if you went that rout.

I really like what Jason @ Bourbon Moth did with his clamp rack. He not only stored a lot of different sizes of clamps, but he also made a mini "store" for all of the consumables like glues and such so that he could buy it all in bulk and then just grab items from there as needed rather than running to the store whenever he got low. If I were to build this storage rack, I would definitely fill up that blank space the way Jason did! (He also did something very similar to hold his whiskey which I thought was funny)

I imagine in the part that has the three walls, you could put sandpaper in, maybe even a holder for rolls of sandpaper strips so you can tear it off for smaller sanding projects. Also, you could do bit and screw storage there, maybe even have like a row of screws with bits for those screws near them on like a magnet strip so they aren't hidden away in a storage case with other bits you don't need. You could even do like storage for your drills and drivers there, in my head I'm thinking like the gun wall from Men in Black where you can choose your drill, the bits you need, and possibly even the screws all in one place lol. Lastly, I think keeping maybe the things you use to break down plywood or boards on the cart would be the most convenient, like any track saws are kept there, circular saws, and even hand saws.

Depending on the number, style, and size of clamps that you have, taking advantage of the depth of the recessed area for back to front clamp storage, so as to minimize their protrusion outside of the space, may be beneficial to you, in which case I'd then say french cleats for the more prominent area. If the recessed area would not be sufficient for your clamps to be stored and/or you just prefer left to right storage, then I'd say use the prominent area for clamps and for the recessed area I'd go with shallow drawers/pull out trays to accommodate divided/compartmented hardware storage boxes for the lower half of the space, and then for the top half, space shelf cleats (left,back,right) two inches apart all the way to the top of the unit for adjustable shelving.

As for an idea for clamp champ storage: keep it simple and use 2×4s or something to make several rails on which you can hook/hang the clamps of various lengths.

The recessed area I would say could be a tool storage or material storage like racks for clamps, spray paints, pipes, tape, etc. As for as the blank wall goes, I'd just stick some nails in and hang my clamps there.

The inset area would be good for French cleat system for glues, tapes, resin. Or shelves but something you can adjust as needed would be better. The cleats would work with the clamps as well. So you can organize your clamps the most efficient way. I like that rack.

Great build and looks very practical. About the empty space, i would use it as whiteboard and planning/current build board. As lots of time i walk over to lumber storage when planning or starting a project. Storage doesnt need to be that close to working area where you need tools so using the space as tool wall wouldnt work for me.

I really like this. Maybe a minor suggestion. Lift the front edge of the rack and things will want to slide to the back, making it easier to load. For the side, long tool storage is obvious, like bar clamps but don't forget straight edges and tools to lift sheet stock. Also things like gloves. Don't know how many times I skewered my self with a stray splinter... Oh and it might be a great place to attach brooms, dust pans and hand brooms. And something to mark lumber with like a wax pencil.... Thanks Bob!

I used a melamine in 3/4 for a bench top once. That thing was boom proof and I spilled all manor of things on it and beat on it pretty well for 10 years. I left it in the old garage when moving out a place. Didn't have room on the trailer for it. Likely still there being abused. I drove by not long ago and it looked like they were restoring a K5 blazer in the garage there!

Making it great to be able to shift your storage easily with them. Might also consider splitting the far left sheets section vertically (maybe put a horizontal divider 30 inches from the bottom) to utilize some of the wasted space at the top.

Use your cast iron pipe idea's from previous projects to store your C clamps or small sized clamps, and a 2x4 T bar for the bar clamps (could even route out finger joints for the clamp bars). for the smaller indented section, you could just have small shelves or pegs for glue/tape and squares, paint pucks etc.

I like the idea of pegboard, but If you do add hooks and things to the pegboard I would also add shelves. Shelves that are at least as long as the longest hooks at waist and shoulder level with generously rounded corners would add more storage BUT more importantly make a visible/physical deterrent for walking too close to the hooks and goring yourself on them. Probably a good place to keep clamps, fasteners, and adhesives too.

Ideas for the 'wall'...... 1. Lay out a rough 'tape measure, vertically on the right end, so you can take out a piece from the storage bin and immediately find out whether it's too small for what you're building. 2. Tray for work gloves, when moving the rough lumber. 3. Holder for those 'assist thingies' that help you move very large sheet goods.
