Bob, this is the first time I have completed a project before you! I was so excited to see you do this and even more pleased that you and I had literally the exact same process - right down to making a custom helmet at the same time for your son (in my case, my daughter, who requested a pink and purple one with unicorns and hearts). I chalk the similarity in our processes up to how much I have watched you on your channel over the past couple of years and what I have learned from you. Keep up the great work!

You can use hairspray applied with a sponge as a chipping mask. I use this technique in model building. After the paint is dry just use a stiff brush ( old toothbrush) or even a piece of masking tape to remove the hairspray and chips will be left behind in whatever your base coat was. It can even be done in layers to have various colors etc. It’s really pretty simple. ILM used the same technique with their props and models.
