There is more information here than in the hour long documentary I was watching before giving up and finding this clip.

There was a lot to learn in this video - everything about it was beyond my own understanding of faith and community. It was interesting for me to contrast the Muslim faith with Christian (e.g. praying a certain number of times a day vs being encouraged to pray continually without a set direction to face or limit of any kind). This playlist is short, but I can already tell I'll get a lot from it which is great.

It has been said that a number of early mosques have a mihrab pointing towards either Jerusalem or Petra rather then to Mecca.

Exactly the point that I make in my comment above. Please keep bringing it to people's attention. This video is good, but it sounds a lot like Islamic da'awa. Current research is casting doubt on the standard Islamic narratives of mosques, Mecca, the Quran, and the Prophet Mohammed.

The qibla (direction of prayer) was initially aimed towards Jerusalem, specifically al-Aqsa mosque. Later on the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received revelation from God to move the qibla towards Mecca to Al-Ka'bah.

beautiful , the 5 pillars of islam are not in the order that you mentioned though, 1-confession of faith, 2- the 5 prayers , 3-zakah , 4-fasting ramadan , 5- hajj . this is due to the importance of each with confession being the most important then praying then.... love your channel , i've started to love history because of it, seriously great job and don't stop it for any reason.

Did you hear about the very interesting research done in the last few years on the directions that the mihrabs face? None of the early mihrabs face Mecca. Dr. Dan Gibson visited hundreds of mosques across the middle East and rigorously measured the direction of their orientation. They faced Petra and other northern regions. Gradually the direction moved south toward Mecca. Current research is casting deep doubts on the origin of Mecca, the Quran, and the Prophet Mohammed.

Excellent topic. A discussion on the seeming disparities in the orientation of the Mihrab in different locations would be interesting. Pointing towards Mecca has been interpreted in different ways, at different times, in different locations. The most obvious is the direct pointing - drawing a straight line from point A to point B. Another method used mirrors that seen in air travel - the line from point A to point B is determined by the length of the trip in distance or time; such a line usually arches over one of the hemispheres of the earth thus, a Mihrab in Northeast U.S. may be oriented in the same direction a flight takes to Mecca - northeast - which can be disorienting since we know that Mecca is not northeast of Boston. It explains many of the 'mistakes' seen in far-flung locations.

Honestly, the calligraphy in the text was the inspiration. This is incredible to view in person at The Metropolitan museum of art in NYC

Also, the historical legacy of the Safavid Empire (Islamic Empire) and the influence of the gift exchange between the Safavid Empire and the Ottoman Empire would have influenced the designs and the Qu'aran style of calligraphy within the exterior of the mihrab and other visual/material traditions

It is the combination of restriction and inspiration Restrictions are that muslim cant make idols and living creatures, hence differentiate the islamic art from syriac, roman and persian art. With no living creature allowed, the only thing left as art are writings(calligraphy), mathematics(geometry) and nature(floral pattern) Inspirations are the imagery of paradise from quran. Most islamic art tried to replicate that.

Mecca is the city, inside the city there is a Prohibited(prohibited from war) Mosque Inside the mosque(its like an open mosque and no ceiling or roof on top), there is a cube building, they face the cube building in a circular form, like ants towards its nest In case u don't know, the word cube is derived from ka'abah
@Suite_annamite
@Suite_annamite 2 жыл бұрын
@@asmrnaturecat984 The word "cube" is from the ancient Greek "κύβος", which is itself from old Indo-European for "bend" or "shape". The word "muse" is also Greek, and not Arabic; and the word "sugar" is Sanskrit, which came to Arabic through Persian. There is even the old allegorical Buddhist dichotomy between "sukkha and "dukha" (sweetness and suffering). It's very dangerous to spread rumours made up by Arabist or Islamist chauvinism into art history, or any history.

According to the museum, it remained in the Madrasa Imami, in Isfahan until the late 1920s, between 1931 and 1939 it was owned by the Iranian art dealer Ayoub Rabenou and was then in Paris. He then sold it to Arthur Upham Pope who was working with The Met. The museum's accession number: 39.20 means that it was the 20th object to enter their collection in 1939.
