I'm disabled from Rheumatoid Arthritis, hands and fingers are in pretty poor shape. I tie my own streamers and nymphs with extra weight so I can use my ten foot spinning rod and spinning reel. I have to say I feel very discriminated against by not being allowed to fish at fly fishing only places.

I fish a selective gear lake in Washington quite often and never see more than 3-4 anglers out there and had the whole lake to myself today. I bring a spinning rod and a couple fly rods. Sometimes I like to troll lures around and take in the scenery and when I get tired of that I go throw chironomids and leeches. It’s pretty much perfect.

I have only seen one “fly fishing lake” and it’s always busy the couple times I’ve gone to it. The lake is about 1 hour away and there’s multiple lakes around I prefer to fish. I’ve been having the itch to bass fish with a fly rod and eventually salmon/steelhead

Accidentally gear fished this lake almost 20 years ago. Caught a monster brown and many decent rainbows if i remember correctly. Folks who lived on the lake came out and yelled at us. 😅 That's how we figured out it was fly fishing.

I had an old metal spinning reel that said “made in West Germany” that I always thought was really cool.

As a spin fisherman who primarily fishes for trout/salmon, I feel that they exclude fisherman from areas would still be great under standard catch and release management. Personally, I fish for trout with a similar enthusiasm that fly fishermen do, and often fish with fly fishermen. I, however, do not fly fish. And am excluded for a lot of great fisheries that I would otherwise explore. There are still many other great fisheries where I live, and I do find that fly fishing only areas often absorb a lot of the pressure from other areas, which I could argue actually benefit those who fish lesser known places that still hold great fish. Are the fly fishing only areas perhaps a little unfair the general public? I believe so. But do they draw pressure away from other areas that might receive more should the fly fishing only section not exist? Perhaps. It’s almost a give and take relationship, so to speak.

I wish they would designate more lakes as catch and release only and manage them for trophy sized fish.

I agree the emphasis on so many lakes heavily stocked with 1/4 lb catchables is sad

Pass lake and Leech lake are the fly fishing lakes I know have good fishing.

Im fine with them honestly, I've been to flyfishing only waters and regular fishing waters and the things I've noticed is that fly fishing waters generally have less people, which is great! Combat fishing is insane to me and I cant fathom why people are ok with fishing on top of each other like that. You did mention fishing mid week or early in the morning is the answer that problem but thats not available for everyone. Also fly fishing only places do tend to be a lot cleaner than other places; I'm not saying thats always the case but it is usually the case. I do both spin fishing and fly fishing but I often find I enjoy myself more when fly fishing and since there isnt a ton of fly fishing only waters I dont really see a problem with them

Conservation sticks is what we call them😂 there claim is the mortality rate on catch and release is lower than spinning gear. Im feel the same way about fly fishing. I did it for a while but prefer to use whatever is most effective for the situation.

It’s always seemed elitist or exclusionary to me. I totally understand restricting what lures can be used, Where you can put weight on your line, etc but realistically what’s the difference to the fish between casting a fly with a weighted fly line and reel vs a water bobber on a spinning rig?
@brandonjelinek8963 Жыл бұрын
Fly fishing is awesome on streams and small high mountain lakes. Nice challenges dropping the fly over a pocket. Totally a “River Runs Through It” feel. It seems like fly fishing only lakes I have been to that needed boats were being fished exactly the same as spinning setups could do. Essentially trolling around nymphs or letting a fly sit on the top of the water with a nymph below and letting the boat and current create the movement. It doesn’t make logical sense to make a rule that defines how the rod and reel is designed. Unfortunately, systems have a terrible time giving up on tradition. There will always be someone my age that will be outraged that a lake isn’t the same rules as when they fished it 30years ago. What we should do is change all the fly fishing only lowland larger lakes to kayak fishing only lakes. Max 14’ length, max 36” wide. Peddle or paddle, single person vessels. Genius!

Ahhh, the boobie fly, the powerbait of fly fishing. Just kidding, I tie and fish them too. But they are kind of power baity. Lol

Not a boobie a blob. Boobies are designed to be fished on sinking lines

Fly. Only ok by me. I don't fly. I did when I was a kid but that was troll wet fly at diamond lake

Lots of the catch and keep crowd don't adhere to the selective gear/C&R rules unfortunately. I've been seeing plenty of bait and bobbers and stashing stringers in the water just in my local tributary, despite it being C&R and no bait (but its not fly fishing only). If we cant trust people to follow two very basic rules, how can we expect them to follow more detailed selective gear rules, like pinching barbs or replacing trebles with single hooks, etc? Especially when enforcement is completely non-existent on most rivers. fly fishers may be a minority, but in regards to access, FFO water is an even bigger minority in the region.

I've always seen it as a way to create a more "elite" fishery, absolutely catering to a minority. Elite, because fly fishing enthusiasts usually spend a lot more money, for less gear. I say that as a long time avid fly fishing fanatic, years ago, lol.

I grew up fly fishing the Clearwater, and above, all the way into the Kelly Creek Wilderness Area. Steelhead and huge wild cutthroat and rainbow. Often decent Brook trout. Later, Brown's Lake, Marshall and No Name, a little further south, in NE Washington, then hit into fly fishing for bass and pike.
