The reason why this song is so instrument driven is that it was originally written as an instrumental (they always include breaks to conserve Saiki's voice through their 2 hour concerts) but Saiki liked it so much that she asked Miku to write lyrics for her. Along with "Freedom", it's now one of their regular "let's have fun" songs.

I saw them near the beginning of their career, at a small rural festival in Kansai (I live in Japan). I almost walked because they were wearing maid costumes. There had been numerous bands wearing costumes taken from anime & manga. But, I recognized the drummer. So I remained - and they were just so tight, talented and simply magnificent. It was magical.

Miku started out with a Rickenbacker, but soon switched over to Zemaitis guitars. That's when she got very serious about her playing, as she wanted to be worthy of such a fine instrument. I'd say she's succeeded, and Zemaitis released a signature model "Flappy Pigeon" for her based on the A24MF earlier this year. To answer your question, I've been to all three of their California concerts. They played Los Angeles once in 2018, and had back-to-back shows in 2019.

Band-Maid is the most versatile and talented rockband on the planet IMO and i am by far not alone with this assumption. Everyone in this band is equal talented in their own way, they are doing what they LOVE and you can see it EVERYTIME, they are very creative with different solos, intros, outros etc. ALL THE TIME and they are working REALLY REALLY hard! Talent also comes with a lot of work, the essence is given, but to make it BURN you have to work for it! And INDEED these ladies are FIRE! Thanks for your great reaction again and i am happy that you are enjoying this awesome bunch of ladies so much! Greetings from Germany... Thank Kanami. She's the mad scientist genius of the band. They call her Sensei in the studio. She writes the majority of the music. Her and Miku the lyrics. She likes to really highlight each member in different songs. Miku and Saiki both write lyrcis. I love Misa and Akanes approach to playing. Akane has the old school mindset to drumming. Small kit. with insanely good skillset. Look forward to seeing them live.

Now a days its a even three way split, kaname sends both akane and misa a barebones rhythm guitar demo. Then they work out drum patterns and bass lines, adding all the fancy fills and stuff later...

I saw them in Dallas, TX USA in 2019 and can confirm: they ARE that much fun live.Whenever they tour again, GO. You'll be glad you did!

Love the reaction! You totally GET these wonderful ladies. They are truly magical! So good to see a reactor who really appreciates “The Gap” of the maid outfits combined with the absolute sonic assault of their music. :) Miku, the red rose, plays Zemaitis guitars. She has her own signature guitar, The Flappy Pigeon. MISA the bassist plays a custom Black Smoker 5 string from Black Cloud a Japanese custom shop. Kanami the lead guitarist plays PRS almost exclusively. Akane the drummer plays Tama drums. All 4 of them are sponsored to one degree or another with the manufacturers.

This one got you moving eh! A great reaction to one of my favorite tracks of theirs. So glad that Kanami forced Miku to learn the guitar, and is still teaching her. She has become a consummate rhythm guitarist now. And is confident enough to shine up front every now and then as in this track. Kanami, as her Sensei, must be so proud.

You asked "Can they go any faster?" Why yes they can! "Black Hole" makes "Play" sound like a slow ballad. Approach with caution and prepare to have your mind melted (fortunately the MV is twinned with "Manners" which gives a nice gentle introduction to proceedings - by Band-Maid standards at any rate)!

Nice and thanks from Japan 有難う💛。One of seven wonders of Band-Maid is Misa's bass playing. It clearly stands out but never disturbs the song Saiki and Miku are singing. On the contrary, I feel sometimes as if I see a 7-foot / 500-pound big 3rd singer with beautiful baritone voice singing behind the front women. As a big fan of BABYMETAL and a newbie fan of Band-Maid, I really want to see the 2 BMs on the same stage in near future. (There was such possibility in Knotfest Japan 2020, which was cancelled due to COVID 😢).

What's kind of funny is that this was recorded in Line Cube Shibuya (also called Shibuya Public Hall) in Tokyo. One of the current managing companies of the venue is Amuse, the talent agency that manages Babymetal, Asterism, and many others. According to the Wiki article on the venue, it holds just over 2000 people. Metallica's first Asian show was played here just after Cliff died, Iron Maiden and U2 have played there, and Japanese bands Galneryus and X Japan have played there.

JVB , This song was originally an instrumental Saiki (lead vocals) liked it so much she asked Miku (rhythm guitar ) to add lyrics , As far as there instruments , Kanami Lead guitar use`s P R S guitars and Mesa boogie Amp , Miku Rhytm guitar use`s Zemaitis guitars and has her own Signature Zamitas model the Flappy Pigeon , she designed the graphics on it ,she use`s E V H amp , MISA MISA MISA , her Bass guitars are made by Black Cloud customs , she use`s Orange amp , Akane use`s Tama drums .

In Herman Li's interview with Miku and Kanami, he asked them which song was their favorite to play live. Miku said 'Play' because it really got the crowd hyped up. Kanami couldn't choose a favorite :)

No doubt Play is one of their best songs in all senses.Composition,balance,energy,chorus structure.And that intro!just phenomenal.Misa kills on her bass lines.Well,Akane throws her happiness on drums.Kanami and Miku build the song and the athmosphere.Saiki makes her voice turn all that magical.Bandmaid are 5 genius girls giving the new breath to rock and to music

One of the best BAND MAID songs there is. They have put this out with several intros. I prefer the MISA intro ... but any intro is terrific :) (this one is MIKU). MIKU's guitar is a rare Zemaitis ... she is sponsored by them ;) . This song was originally written as an instrumental. Saiki decided she really liked it and asked MIKU to add lyrics. Voila!

THE best live Rock band in existence. The ending of Play segues into the start of Domination from the same concert, btw. Nice to see Miku (who turned 30 yesterday) getting some riffs in in that opening. PS Love your wall!

I think we have to come up with a new superlative, because that "these ladies are on fire" is such an understatement. :) Well, you've heard Domination, Play and Freedom. The only song missing is "Onset" to complete the must-listen list. Actually, the song 'Moratorium' and a few other pearls like an acoustic-set also belong to it, but unfortunately they are not available on YT anymore. ... *cough* check your mails regarding this. :) Otherwise, I think a comparison with maybe the only band that could hold a candle to them would be appropriate. I'm talking about the song 'Secret My Lips' by our Maids vs. the cover 'Secret Maiko Lips' by Band-Maiko. They are really talented and to see these two bands on the same stage one day would be unreal. Just the idea of a guitar duel between Kanami and Kanoemi melts a circuit or two in my head. 🤭

Band Maid has so much fun when on stage, it's infectious! The next song after this song is Domination, songs 21 and 22 out of 23 at this concert! Black Hole is much faster than this song, coupled with Manners, it's a great contrast between the songs! A real show case for Misa, the Barefoot Assassin on bass, is No God! Enjoyed your reaction and unbridled glee shown during this song!

Band-Maid does more with 3 1/2 minutes than most bands do in an entire album. This was the 2nd live version they put out. There are elements from both versions that I adore. The crowd energy and intro for this version is superior to the first, but the Zepp Tokyo version didn't rely on the backing vocal tracks as much. Of course this version show Miku's improvement on guitar more but I miss her telling the crowd to "shake your body, hands up!"

Hey, I love your reaction to this song, but.... I just can't shake the feeling that you already know the song. You even knew when the chorus was beginning! I just kept looking at 5:18, wondering how you could possibly know the rhythm and beat of the chorus when it's your first time hearing it.
